He died of an inoperable brain tumor; the decline was very quick.

I marvel at the fact that I finally met him less than a year ago. On that occasion, he explained that his proudest accomplishment was returning Clara Rockmore's theremin to playable condition after several technicians had declared it impossible to fix. Afterwards, he got to hear the elderly performer put the repaired instrument through its paces, with tears in her eyes.
