What do they have to do with music ? Rap isn't music, it's just
pseudo-poetry put to a stagnant electonic beat.

IOW, it SUCKS.

Britishbob, Monday, 22 August 2005 06:52 (twenty years ago)

it is kind of interesting how Will was following LL's lead when they were teen rappers, but ever since Will did an NBC sitcom with Alfonso Ribeiro and graduated to action movies, LL's been chasing him down that path.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 22 August 2005 10:33 (twenty years ago)

LL seems a bit more comfortable with who he is musically.

Hillary Brown (Hillary Brown), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

Both released their best single in over ten years this year.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

OK 'Hush' isn't better than 'G.O.A.T.'. Dang.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

i had every single Jazzy jeff and fresh prince album when i was in elementary school.

JD from CDepot, Monday, 22 August 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

you should put his face in the sand.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 22 August 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

ok, c'mon... "radio", is there anything more to say.

...and ll is much softer on the eyes.

ehbenoit, Monday, 22 August 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

lady loves cool james

Well, considering Will Smith's last album (good as bits of it were) was mostly full of songs asking people to get off his back for not cursing, yeah I'd rather have someone who's not so explicitly concerned with establishing his cred.

This might be a false distinction, though, since I listened to the Will Smith very closely for reviewing purposes, and have mostly ignored LL's recent lyrics.

This thread has got me listening to "I'm Bad" and the excellent pojmasta chop up of "Mama Said Knock You Out"

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 22 August 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

fuck LL. muscle bound jerk

Watch the video for "Round the Way Girl" and say the same.

He has a fondness for the ladies. He is rulin'.

Will Smith jacked two of my favorite songs -- The Whispers' "And the Beat Goes On" and Patrice Rushen's "Forget Me Nots" -- and savaged them with his bland black attack. I did like him in his role spraying paint on his underarms on the "Fresh Prince" title sequence. Bravo, Big Willie.

Confounded (Confounded), Monday, 22 August 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

Both of them suck. They have ZERO musical talent.

rap sucks, hip-hop sucks, as they are dependant
on REAL music to sustain their fraudulent scam.

If you like FAKE music (pseudo-poetry put
to a stagnant electronic beat), then you
are a total MORON.

truth, Monday, 22 August 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

Will Smith has done some nice singles, but come on. LL is one of *the* great live performers, and if he'd only made "I Need a Beat" and dropped off the planet, he'd still be celebrated as a man with a gift.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 07:34 (twenty years ago)

will smith 's only good single was his debut,ll cool j has only just lost his touch.
will smith has comic timing but isn't a good serious actor.his action sequences a leave a lot to be desired.

roundtheway guy, Tuesday, 23 August 2005 07:39 (twenty years ago)

In Will Smith's defence, LL HAS done MTV Unplugged.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 08:46 (twenty years ago)

Will Smith can be an excellent serious actor (e.g., Six Degrees of Separation) but doesn't push himself hard enough at it.

Hillary Brown (Hillary Brown), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

Whereas LL can be an excellent serious Pusher but doesn't act hard enough at it.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

Big Willie

Seriously, has LL done anything good since Phenomenon??

Fetchboy (Felcher), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

Why the hell are all the "rap sux" trolls going to town on a thread about Will Smith & LL Cool J? Shd we start an Eric Clapton thread so folx can go "rock sux" all over it?

dude, summertime trumps anything ll ever did

Yes, Kool & the Gang rules the world. Was Will Smith on this track too?

Confounded (Confounded), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

Summertime = definitive step off the quality cliff for Will (was Boom! Shake The Room later than that? call it an updraft, or a bounce, or something)

obviously LL has churned out piles more rub since he turned crap than Will has, but LL's decade-or-so of brilliance trumps Will's fistful of excellent pop singles. (James stayed good further out of his teens than the Fresh Prince did, too.)
