Anyone know of any plans to release any kind of SnubTV compilation or complete series DVD's?

I've only got very worn VHS copies of odd bits and pieces here and there....

arnoldpalmer, Monday, 22 August 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

Ditto the video.

I have an official Snub TV video. Volume one, it says...

of course there is no vol 2.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 22 August 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

anyhow, they had that terrible habit of dubbing the studio recording over film of live performances...

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 22 August 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

i have the first official volume on vhs. was there a second?
ooh mercy seat by ultra vivid scene!

they should do RAPIDO first anyway. honestly the beeb are sitting on a goldmine of stuff.

piscesboy, Monday, 22 August 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

you might be able to request this on yookaynovah and have someone cough it up.

someone needs to upload some Dance Energy bigtime.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 22 August 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

If Snub TV is the one where The Fall did Bill is Dead and Mark E Smith began his performance by washing his hands in the gents before joining the band in the room next door then I'd like one too.

wtin, Monday, 22 August 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

There is some snub on UK N0va! Check it out. But no, no, no, no to Dance Energy and Normski. That show sucked!

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Monday, 22 August 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

is that the tv show which had fatima mansions doing a mad track all tied up in a church - or something like that ..

and the theme song/tune by on-u sound system ?

mark e (mark e), Monday, 22 August 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

the fatima mansions clip for "only losers take the bus" is on the video, aye. along with - from memory - "eardrum buzz" and "kidney bingos" by wire, and some raggle-taggle honk by the band of holy joy. ISTR "the hairstyle of the devil" is on there too.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 22 August 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

snub was shown in america on the wonderful Night Flight, part of USA's Up all Night. I remember Renegade Soundwave's Kray Twins video, some live Pussy Galore and the Cookie Crew in studio.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 22 August 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

snub (on the aforementioned night flight) introduced me to the pastels and the fall on the same night. i would love to have this on dvd. same with irs' the cutting edge.

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Monday, 22 August 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

Fond SNUB memories include the video for Motorcycle Boy - "Big Rock Candy Mountain", Sonic Youth - "Schizophrenia" live, and the video for "Wrote for Luck". I was blown away when Night Flight ran it!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 22 August 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I've got the episode with "Hairstyle of the Devil" on an old VHS somewhere, along with "I Will Die With My Head In Flames" by Felt, "Dickie Davies Eyes" from Half Man Half Biscuit, and a Telescopes interview.

everything, Monday, 22 August 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

There is a bit of it on the Stone Roses DVD, I think.

I could be wrong though.

I was thinking yesterday, about Dinosaur Jr, on this programme.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 06:37 (twenty years ago)

Yes, there was a video for Freak Scene that was on it, filmed in John Robb's garden perhaps? Somewhere in Lancashire according to a friend, anyhow. I can only recall a few scrappy bits of the rest of the show, I have a terrible memory. Dunno if I need a DVD of it, would rather have something on telly in the here and now that had half the scope of it. Do remember trawling campus like a saddo to try and find a TV to watch it on during my first term at university though.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 07:17 (twenty years ago)

The band of holy joy had an intro by Vic Reeves, a couple years before "Big night out" was on c4...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 07:32 (twenty years ago)

i have 4 or 5 complete episodes on tape somewhere but none of the bits that anyone's talking about upstairs except that 'raggle-taggle honk'. (only bits i remember are 'one of our girls has gone missing' and maybe 'ghosts of american astronauts' although i did recently sit down and write out a tracklisting. will dig it out.)

koogs (koogs), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 08:58 (twenty years ago)

I've got vague recollectios of Dub Sex doing 'Swerve' and King of the Slums playing 'The Pennine Spitter'. I might be thinking of another programme though (if so, what?).

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 09:09 (twenty years ago)

I did a tracklisting of my "snubTV" vid, back when I had more time in my life..

I should scan it.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 09:14 (twenty years ago)

Volume one, it says...

of course there is no vol 2.

-- mark grout (mark.grou...), August 22nd, 2005 12:35 AM. (later)

I'm looking at my copy of Vol. 2 now! It's the one which opens with 'Bill Is Dead' as mentioned further upthread. Some of the vids are a bit shite, but it's completely worth it for Ted Chippington's 'Pull Up' and the Cramps 'All Women Are Bad'.

Sasha (sgh), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 11:11 (twenty years ago)

Yes, there was a Vol.2 - but no Vol.3, which is a shame as there were (if memory serves) three series of SnubTV. The last one, broadcast in early 1991, broke the news about the Cocteaux leaving 4AD while they bashed out a version of "Orange Appled".

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

Randoms bits that have popped into my head... World Dom's 'Hotsy Girl' video with lots of stock cars careening into each other... Big Stick doing 'Crack Attack'... an interview with an extremely stoned Butthole Surfers at their studio... AR Kane's 'Baby Milk Snatcher'...

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

Ah now yr talking.... except "Hotsy Girl" was on the Gimme Shelter NME video compilation not Snub TV.

Check, for the Butts though.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 11:35 (twenty years ago)

There was also a late night itv programme (called Transmission??) from around the same time that used to show lots of post c86 type stuff - videos and interviews (Heavenly, Popguns, 14 iced bears, Felt, Brilliant Corners etc).

The World Domination Enterprises video on Snub was for Asbestos lead Asbestos, I think.

flowersdie (flowersdie), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

I have vague memories of seeing Shut Up And Dance on Snub/Rapido once upon a time. I'd love to watch either show now, but I bet it's a bit shit really.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

Would have preferred SnrubTV myself...

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:43 (twenty years ago)

Yes, there was a video for Freak Scene that was on it, filmed in John Robb's garden perhaps?

This video is on the remastered Bug!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

the one in the garden with a big carved wooden sailor? that was wonderful. Also on Snub video = sunburst by Tangerine, I loved that song at the time, haven't heard it in about fifteen years, bet it's dated massively

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

Here we go. have no idea which series this is or whether it's complete (4 x 30 mins approx):

epmd - ?
a c marias - one of our girls
ride - drive blind
ancient beatbox - raining
sacher musak - gorba
jesus and mary chain - gimme hell / take it

bad - living in america
mc buzz b - how sleep the brave
kid congo - la historia de un amour
renegade soundawave - probably a robbery
galaxie 500 - snowstorm
the times - manchester

heartthrobs - she's in a trance
massive - daydreaming / unfinished sympathy
crime and the city solution - the dolphins and the sharks
william burroughs - thanksgiving prayer
young disciples - step right on / apparently nothing
godfathers - unreal world
coil - windowpane

telescopes - celeste
caveman - i'm ready
catherine wheel - she's my friend
dylans - godlike
galliano - nothing has changed / storm clouds gather
kitchens of distinction - drive that fast

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 07:32 (twenty years ago)

the one in the garden with a big carved wooden sailor? that was wonderful

The reason I thought about this was... The Mighty Boosh "music video" segments.

Koogy's tracklisting seems to confirm that we are remembering it through rose-tinted spectacles.

Yes, I remember "Swerve" and King of the Slums doing a song that went "one swaller... dunner mek a summer".

What I would like is a massive Frank Sidebottom anthology on DVD. Bagsy doing the subs - Little Frank in italics.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 08:09 (twenty years ago)

there was a great butthole surfers feature and yello too if i remember. i have some snub stuff on vhs somewhere. also of note was the fini tribe's elect-rolux video, an appalling momus one that sounded like a weak pet shop boys, the beatnigs, world domination enterprises great al fresco performance of asbestos lead asbestos. there were lots of equally good things and piss poor things. each to their own etc.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 08:32 (twenty years ago)

the one in the garden with a big carved wooden sailor? that was wonderful

I'm led to believe that the pink fisherman was nicked from a chippy by someone out of long-forgotten Preston legends, the Dandelion Adventure.

"one swaller... dunner mek a summer".

"...but one will do for now, and as if I had a choice..." God, what song was that? 'Fanciable Headcase' maybe? Is that the same song with the immortal line "you gave me a knee-trembler to remember"? Oh, I used to love KOTS and should really listen to them again.

Thanks to Koogs for the tracklisting, it's brought back a rush of memories, most of them good.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 09:05 (twenty years ago)

world dom clip for "asbestos lead asbestos" = teh funney, & better than the record deserved, a bit.

the clip of new unsigned band RIDE playing "Drive Blind" was good & thrilling also.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 10:04 (twenty years ago)

i got the stuff that was recently on ukn0va and only watched a bit of it so far. the torrent was a mix of snub and rapido i think.

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 10:40 (twenty years ago)

that snubTV video #2 was great - first (and only) time i ever saw loop 'in action'.

i reckon that NME 'carry on disarming' video is totally due to be bumped to DVD - ar kane's "green hazed daze", telescopes "perfect needle", spacemen 3 "revolution", ac marias, uhh... tonnes more... what an amazing vid, wish i had a copy.

jon dale, Wednesday, 24 August 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

I was at the King of the Slums/Dub Sex gig that was filmed for Snub. It was shot at Manchester Boardwalk and I can occasionally be glimpsed bouncing around near the front. I seem to remember being heartily sick of that electric violin by the end of the evening.

holojames (holojames), Friday, 26 August 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

the Butthole surfers one was the one where Gibby Haynes was going on about popping an eye out and pointing it at the other eye to get visual feedback "probably with a slight flange" which may or may not have inspired Pete Baran's greatest lie

I remember the one with MC Buzz B, renegade soundwave and the Times really clearly for some reason.

Porkpie (porkpie), Saturday, 27 August 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

The Times - was that the opportunistic Madchester cash-in song?

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Saturday, 27 August 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

Re Carry On Disarming: I actually started a thread on that one, three and a half years ago:

Carry On Disarming

OleM (OleM), Saturday, 27 August 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

Jamie, yes, the chorus went manchester, manchester england. The only other line I remember was about bouncers with butterflies round their necks at the Hacienda

Porkpie (porkpie), Saturday, 27 August 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

This thread reminds me I've got a video tape somewhere of parts of Snub, Rapido and Transmission, from memory including things like the Bill is Dead performance mentioned above, the Snub footage of a secret Cure gig, an astounding Butthole Surfers live video for Jimi in which Gibby sets his hand alight and shakes hands with someone in the audience (I think that's from Transmission), Miki from Lush interviewing Chapterhouse in the snow, followed by some of the lamest live footage ever seen from Chapterhouse themselves and lots of other stuff.
I'm going to have to try and find this one and see if it still even plays!

M Carty (mj_c), Sunday, 28 August 2005 06:08 (twenty years ago)

I was at the King of the Slums/Dub Sex gig that was filmed for Snub. It was shot at Manchester Boardwalk and I can occasionally be glimpsed bouncing around near the front. I seem to remember being heartily sick of that electric violin by the end of the evening.

A Dub Sex gig? Damnit I would have liked to have seen that! They
were a really interesting, unique band. I'm still proud to own their
CD compilation, I just couldn't believe it when I found a copy of that one day. King of The Slums did grate on your nerves after awhile with that violin, though, you're right about that.

I still have two videotapes of Snub material from the U.S. Night Flight TV show...a friend of mine asked me about them recently cause he was looking for stuff by the Dragsters and I have one video of them on here.
Here's what I've got:

Dragsters - I'm Not An American on Union City Records
The Leather Nun - Cool Shoes on Wire Records
Marrs - Pump Up The Volume
Phillip Boa & Voodoo Club - Kill Your Ideals
Hula - Big Heat
Hula - Walk On Stalks of Shattered Glass
Hula - Freeze Out
Shamen - Christopher Mayhew Says
The Motorcycle Boy - Big Rock Candy Mountain

Interview with Paul Smith of Blast First Records
Sonic Youth - Sister (live London '87)
Big Stick - Drag Racing
Butthole Surfers - Hey
Big Black - Fish Fry (last UK gig July '87)
Big Black - Jordan
Big Black talking about "Jordan"
Sonic Youth & Iggy Pop onstage doing "I Wanna Be Your Dog"

Swans - New Mind
interview w/ Michael Gira of Swans
solo performance of Gira doing "You're Not Real Girl"
(it was so easy to figure out how to play this from watching him)
Wedding Present - Anyone Can Make A Mistake
Godfathers - I Want Everything

Then I've got the Factory Records Snub show w/Mondays, Wilson, New Order, Miaow. And one more Snub episode w/Blue Aeroplanes, We Free Kings (whom I remember nothing about at all), Fats Comet, Tall Dwarfs and J.A.M.M.S. (who I guess had something to do with KLF?).

The Spiderwebbed Wilderness (Bimble...), Sunday, 28 August 2005 06:29 (twenty years ago)

Isn't the butthole surfers stuff from Snub all on "the blid eye sees all"?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Sunday, 28 August 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

Porkpie - I have a Creation video from 1990 which has that Times song on it. It also has that Tangerine - Suburst song. And a lot of stuff which is much better (Ride, MBV, Primal Scream, House of Love).

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Sunday, 28 August 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

wouldn't mind seeing that one day - Billingsgate market? 3am next Wednesday?

Porkpie (porkpie), Sunday, 28 August 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I can lend that to you. Remember to look for the woodpecker.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Sunday, 28 August 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

ha, just remembered - no video player anymore :(

Porkpie (porkpie), Sunday, 28 August 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

i'm pretty sure snub ran the hotsy girl video as well. snub would've been the only place i could've seen it.

pCAN, Wednesday, 7 September 2005 05:41 (twenty years ago)

I'm nearly certain they didn't.

If you have, or know someone with, the NME "Gimme Shelter" VHS compilation, it's on there.

I found my Snub TV compilation video, I should scan the contents. It's about 3 hours, and some of it's not from the show but hey.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 07:20 (twenty years ago)

I never saw that NME tape and yet I did see 'Hotsy Girl' on telly. Is there a mysterious Programme X that we're all forgetting?

I was at the King of the Slums/Dub Sex gig that was filmed for Snub. It was shot at Manchester Boardwalk and I can occasionally be glimpsed bouncing around near the front.

Ah man, the Boardwalk, such an intense place to see music. Is it still in existence? I saw so many great things there. Two favourite ones were Young Gods on the L'Eau Rouge tour and Fugazi on their first ever visit, round about the time of Margin Walker. Which reminds me - there was a live version of 'Suggestion' on Snub too once right?

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 07:36 (twenty years ago)

What a naughty man!

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

I agree with pCAN. They must have run Hotsy Girl as I can't see how else I would have seen it. NME video comps wouldn't have been NTSC format.

Mr. Whirly, Please Don't Call Me (Bimble...), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

I too have seen the Hotsy Girl vid on terrestial telly. Maybe it was on the Chart Show?

no wonder you can't find stuff like this when neither the band nor the track title is in the 'Tags'

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 09:23 (twenty years ago)

Oh, Snub. I had a tape with loads of stuff on it, including 'Mercy Seat' and 'Bill Is Dead'. MY MOTHER TAPED OVER IT EVEN THOUGH IT WAS LABELLED.

Zora (Zora), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:00 (twenty years ago)

Kitchens of Distinction - Drive that Fast - Video

Stephen Wilde, Friday, 28 April 2006 10:15 (twenty years ago)

I think 'I wanna be adored' was from The Hacienda. They also did 'sugar spun sister'.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 28 April 2006 10:31 (twenty years ago)

Jesus, I'd totally forgotten about Drive. If I ever knew much about them in the first place.
