According to my Joel Whitburn book, Nirvana may have been a bigger Dance/Disco act than Funkadelic!

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" peaked at #14, 11 wks total.

"One Nation Under a Groove" peaked at #31, 2 wks total.
"(not just) Knee Deep" peaked at #43, 12 wks total.

Which makes sense; I put on "One Nation" at a frat party once and totally cleared the floor.

What happens at "frat parties" when someone puts on "Smells Like Teen Spirit," dare I ask?

Boppin'!

Alex, there's no need to scare-quote "frat parties" if dr. phil is actually talking about a frat party.

Too bad Nirvana never got an Arthur Baker remix.

By "frat party" I actually meant "naked Aztec ritual on a spaceship."

...where you'd think Funkadelic would go over really well!

True, but I find putting quotations around something I find offensive makes me feel better about it. Kinda like putting on rubber gloves before handling something unclean, y'know?

nirvana would go over like a lead balloon at any frat party today. i mean, how do you grind up against a 18 year old communications major to "with the lights out/ its less dangerous"?

You don't, you sigh a manly sigh and say wistfully, "they just don't make music like this anymore." Works almost as well.

Joe Smooth (creator of "Promised Land") was DJing at summerdance, opening for Andre Hatchet, and he played some dance remix of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and everybody went CRAZY.

I don't get how this makes them a big dance/disco act. (Surely there are rock singles that have peaked much higher than #14?)

not big, bigger

dr. phil (josh langhoff), Monday, 22 August 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

neither is as big as Lime, for instance, or Nitzer Ebb

Note, however, that Funkadelic peaked much higher on the R&B chart than the pop chart.

some dance remix of "Smells Like Teen Spirit"

A remix of the Nirvana original, or the cover by Abigail?

There's also the Dirty Fonker (?) bootleg remix of "Lithium" from a year or so ago.
