That's a lot of songs, can you recommend a couple of your best?

I'm playing it cool but it's terribly cruel / Kate (papa november), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

It's hard to be objective, but I am very fond of The Lovely Miss, because I wrote it whilst I was at the Camelopardalis Camp in the African Savannah.

It isn't bad but it isn't really my thing.

Are you the new Marissa Marchant? Please say no.

Okay, I had a listen. Like polyphonic, it's not really my thing however it would be unfair to leave it at that. The production is polished and it has a good commerical feel, I'm sure it would appeal to a great many other people, just not me. Nice work.

I can't really comment on the rock tracks, because that's not my thing, but here's a few thoughts on the electronic stuff: I liked some of the sounds, but you seem to pull them straight out of the box, without layering or editing or modulating them much. I think in this sort of minimalist music it's essential to twist the sounds so they become uniquely yours, otherwise it feels like you're just playing with ready-made blocks. But don't be discouraged by this, you'll just need to keep on doing more.

I listened to the three 'raze' tracks. The sunflower one I quite liked, it was as if you crossed 'my life in the bush of ghosts' with 'mali music'. It sort of teetered on the line of sounding too heavy and droney with some of the guitar, but thankfully never really crossed that line. I also could see myself listening to the other two but the voice was not quite professional sounding (though I think it could be if recorded again).

The lyrics on the third track 'jockey' were treading a thin line with the refrain from a nursery rhyme; generally that kind of thing becomes annoying quickly. But then I was listening on laptop speakers so I couldn't hear everything. The guitar fret squeaks were nice but I think they could be toned down a bit across the board so they are less overwhelming.

Oh and you should be aware that if you are called Muse there is already somebody popular called that, and also 'state of mind' was a song by the band 'senser' that you probably don't want to be associated with.

Anyway, good work!

There's definitely some good stuff there. I'm not clear on what all this is though, is it a bunch of different projects you're involved with?

My best advice would be to take one or two projects and focus on them. Give them separate web sites (if you're doing more than one), and really give each project its own sound/style. Figure out what it is you're doing and what kind of audience it's aimed at (i.e., people who also like x and y and z might like you as well). And try to play live a lot, especially on bills with bands that would appeal to similar people.

I'm not sure what you play/do on these tracks, but it's good stuff and you seem talented, so I think it's just a matter of how you direct your focus and how you (gasp) market yourself.

To put it another way, no one is going to just listen to your tracks and say "Wow, there's this really talented dude making lots of different kinds of music! I'm going to (write about him, sign him, etc.)"

Or perhaps "really talented chick" (judging from the name "Meg")
