ok, well, basically, ANYTHING, any groups going now, any music scene, any cds i can buy when I'm in spain, any spanish version of the london improviser's orchestra, any decent spanish rock groups, any decent spanish pop, any elctronic stuff, any contemporary classical spanish composer?
I am half spanish, and every time i visit my family I wander about the town ew live in searching desperately for good record shops, a music scene of some sort, or just a radio station that doesn't play rubbish. It's got to be out there somewhere, but I never seems to find it. And yet when I go to ATP (especially ATP when shellac are on the lineup) I find whole groups of spanish people who have made it down to camber sands to see them, bands I like sometimes tour spain (although not generally my town) and there seems to be some interesting stuff going down in a twon about three hours drive from mine.

So basically, seeing as there are so many people who know so much stuff here, maybe some of you might be able to help me out, just suggest things or, anything.

Kompaktish electro/techno: Factor City (from BCN).

Lucky Kitchen's Alejandra and Aeron are now based in BCN, but I'd suspect their releases are easier to find in the US and elsewhere on the continent.

following philip's lead: iñaqui marin's album (out on regular records) is excellent

and dude, getting some exposure to interesting stuff in spain isn't all that hard...get a hold of magazines like rockdelux or go mag

manuel (manuel), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

The song "Ahora Si", by Vacaciones, appears on a March Records comp (Little Molly has a Treat for You) and is excellent -- I know nothing about this band except that they're from Spain.

MIGALA

Clay (cws), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

Definitely pick up Go - a fantastic magazine, and their contributor Javier Blanquez is one of my favorite writers around (even though I only understand about half of what he says, the slangy bastard).

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

Oops, Go's site seems just to be a placeholder. Sorry for the artifically raised expectations.

the las escarlatinas album is beautiful.
new comp on siesta called Vuda Burguesa(las escarlatinas are on siesta too) helmed by Ramon Leal which means it's gonna be brilliant.

if you want an intro to a few contemporary spanish composers, check out "cinq quatuors espagnols," performed by the arditti string quartet. an eye-opener.

Le Mans is mellow and sad.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

they were, well actually early on it was a bit peppier with the original band being almost proto-pipasish, they have a new band now called Single with some ex-Le Mans people(singer and ibon errazkin) in it.

keith m (keithmcl), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 01:35 (twenty years ago)

Pretty good stuff from the (mostly) twee-pop label Elefant (Niza, La Casa Azul, Family) or Acuarela (Sr. Chinarro, Migala).

Also check out the fabulous Mala Rodriguez's blend of hip-hop and flamenco music.

daavid (daavid), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 05:10 (twenty years ago)

otm on the manta ray and elefant and acuarela.

there are a few good art rock weirdo bands from there that i'm forgetting the names of. curses.

Grabba Grabba Trape are the hottest thing right now.

But I mostly listen to pop: check El Canto Del Loco or El Sueño De Morfeo, and cheers to whoever mentioned Bebe.

Diego Valladolid (dvalladt), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

It should be Grabba Grabba Tape.

It's sad that this thread isn't titled "Sing Me Spanish Techno."

Los Planetas

nocure, Tuesday, 30 August 2005 10:15 (twenty years ago)

Maga is my favorite band from Spain - it's electro indie pop if you're into that.

I'd also second Migala - Restos de un incendio is a good starting point since it's re-recorded versions of their first three albums - sort of like a mix between mogwai and tindersticks, sung in english.

Ojos de Brujo also

Jacobo Rock (jacobo rock), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

I'll second Grabba Grabba Tape (who sound like an instrumental DFA1979 with synth instead of bass, and dress like yetis - yep, that's right!) and add Ginferno, who sound like Calexico on drugs. You'll probably have some difficulty in finding anything recorded by them though, as they have only released a few 7" and the odd CD-R demo, but if you stumble on the opportunity to see them live, don't miss it.

thankyou all, I haven't beeen in spain for a while actually (although i hope to be back soon enough) thanks for a ll the non 'latin' recommendations, but i agree that rockdelux (despite its cringey name) is a GOOD magazine

does anyone know anything about any sort of music scene in galicia? (i get the feeling that vigo might be the best place for that sort of thing. Anyone know why?)

noname#1 (noname#1), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

Well, there used to be some sort of scene in Vigo, there has been good/famous bands coming out of this city in the past -such as Siniestro Total, Golpes Bajos or Los Piratas-, so you could guess that there's an interesting rock scene there. I wonder what's going on there right now. Actually I spent my summer holidays in Galicia, though not in Vigo, and a friend and me discussed about why there aren't more bands coming out of that part of the country anymore, or at least bands that are causing some sort of sensation outside their city. Anyway, I reckon I'm not the most informed person about Galicia's recent past and present...

Though I do dislike RockDeLux, I like some of their fetish bands. Such as Astrud. One half of Astrud is also one half of Hidrogenesse; I want to be quoted as saying that Hidrogenesse's "Vamos A Salir Del Siglo" is one of the best spanish pop songs of the last 25 years or so -some sort of mix of Sparks, T.Rex and the KLF.

"Zapatillas" by El Canto Del Loco is also amongst the very best modern spanish pop songs. I think an acceptable comparison would be Busted.

Diego Valladolid (dvalladt), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

Search: Francisco Guerrero 'orchestral works' (col legno). I bet 'zayin' (there is a disc w/arditti str quartet but I've yet to hear) is pretty good too.

Whatever Ibon Errazkin is up to these days. Also, Ana D.

(Yes, we like Grimsey Records.)

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Saturday, 4 February 2006 17:08 (twenty years ago)

Las Perras Del Infierno! I think that means Bitches From Hell. They play garage-punk-surf-pop. I've only got their Somos Las Perras 12" but that one's fun.
