are you good at predicting/convincingly explaining the sucess of an artist/song/etc?

if someone played a piece of music, would you have a fair idea of what sort of sales it's going to achieve?

are you regularly stumped by the success (or lack of) that particular artists have achieved?

Or, do you think you can convincingly explain what characteristics make many artists successful?

does liking/disliking the music in question yourself completely cloud your judgement on things like this?

I think I can explain usually but I'm quite bad at predicting. Like in retrospect the whole James Blunt/Daniel Powter awfulness seems obvious but I'd not have bet on it beforehand.

Occasionally you get to hear stuff played for the first timeish on radio, (e.g. "I'm too sexy" and "Freed from desire") that you think "That is going to be huge", and some time afterwards you find that the particular track(s) had got turned down by all the major labels. Which makes you think A&R dept know nothing or try too hard or something.

"Freed from desire"

Well, the number of girls that have boyfriends that could be classed as 'unconventional' that have politics that suggest some deep connection to a pure life and spirituality,

bought this.

I definitely thought "One Thing" was going to be huge the first time I heard it. I remember thinking Through The Wire was going to be big when I first heard it, but that was sort of based on having already heard a friend talk about the song and how frothy he got over it (I thought people would get into the whole conceit of the song, which they did).

But otherwise, I don't really know if I have any special powers of discernment - it'd be really fun to take part in some kind of game/survey where you hear a bunch of new songs and try to predict which will be hits.

I have no idea on how to explain but have to say that on the predicting subject i a'm good enough. Liking doesn't cloud my judgement on this matter, a hit is a hit wether you like it or not.

New Dipset single is hot. That's my prediction. You heard it here.

I was astonished that the Back Wudz track wasn't getting any heat.
Now MTV is rolling around in their shit. So go figure.
