The latest CD by J. Mascis, the guitarist and singer of Dinosaur jr, is a collection of devotional songs dedicated to the living Indian Saint, Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi (Amma).

Amma is a humanitarian and spiritual leader who has dedicated her life to uplifting suffering humanity through the her embrace, which she offers to all regardless of caste, creed or religion. She often sits as long as 20 hours straight in order to console people in this way. In the past 30 years she has hugged more than 24 million people throughout the world.

Amma has also started a vast range of humanitarian projects, including orphanages, charitable hospitals and free homes for the homeless. After the tsunami struck in December 2004, Amma pledged 23 million dollars in relief aid. Her organization is currently in the process of building 6200 homes destroyed in the disaster, and has been providing free food, medical care and shelter since the disaster struck. All the proceeds of Mascis' CD go towards this cause. For information about Amma visit www. amma. org.

The CD finds Mascis both on electric and acoustic guitar, playing original devotional songs, including "Help Me, Amma," "Amma What Now?," "Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu," "Please Remember That I'm Here" and "Take Me Home."

"Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu" is a Sanskrit mantra meaning "May All the Beings in all the Worlds Be Happy." The final song, "Ayi Giri Nandini," is a metalized version of a Sanskrit hymn by Adi Shankaracharya. Written around 1300 years ago, the hymn sings the glories of the Divine Mother as she slaughters the demonic forces of Mahisha Asura, the Buffalo Demon. Mahisha Asura symbolizes the dark negativities of humanity: greed, anger, laziness, pride, etc.

I am totally intrigued. Anybody heard this?

when's your album of devotional songs coming out, Roger?

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

Good signs: My Goals Beyond

Bad signs: Everything J. Mascis has recorded since "Green Mind"

Austin: "get me"'s ok

bb (bbrz), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

Adam - it already did. Didn't you hear it? It was called "Paens to My Huge Cock" and it came out on Eat My Ass Raw Records out of Belgium in an edition of ten. I'll see if I can't get you a copy.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

I shouldn't be so dismissive. I really haven't heard anything from the guy in ages.

But man, smoking pot all day and listening to "Bug" over and over in 1989 was great.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

It still is dude.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

To be fair, I'd mix it up some with Daydream Nation, Pauls Boutique, Mingus Ah Um, Blue Trane and several others.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

hmmm a recipe for a long spell on the couch

bb (bbrz), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

Yes 1989 was very good to me, potwise, musicwise, and couchwise.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

i'd hug it

Ammamont?

Amma is unharmed

August 21, 2005 - Latest News from Amritapuri

Amma is unharmed. She is giving Devi Bhava darshan now. Stranger with a hidden knife rushes to the stage during Amma's bhajans. Devotees overpowered him and have handed him over to the police. None of today's Devi Bhava programs were interrupted by this incident.

Can anybody vouch for the music, though? Should I just go ahead and buy this?

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

It's for a good cause!

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

I'm also quite intrigued.

Also - who are the 'friends' involved? The Fog? Or some other freaks?

Amma gets a "3" (top rating) on the Guru Rating Database (scroll down to second entry). Links are interesting too.

three weeks pass...
Hmmm, it's weird. The songs are nice enough - not a real far cry from J's other acoustic stuff, only with chanting. One of the backing vocalists sounds like Lenny Kravitz. The guitar solos are killer. Overall, nothing too spectacular until the final track, which is a bizzaro quasi-metal thing that truly sounds like nothing else in the universe.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Saturday, 1 October 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

It's the first new album of his I've bought in over a decade. For my purposes, of course, Amma is merely the songs' McGuffin/mantra/catalytic agent, but you you must accept this conceit, or you'll have a bit of a problem with the lyrics.

Still, there's much joy in repetition, and the warm vacuum-tuby sound of the guitars, and in Mascis's voice, which I now realize I'd missed.

I still love J and Dinosaur so much. Their quiet place in the canon must be assured for the generations to follow.

'quiet' place

though i say that and i am 50% about the frazzled slow jams w/dino so maybe not entirely inappropriate

So, Mascis + "Fade Into You" = Grant Lee Buffalo, more or less. Who'da thunk it?

marcos, Tuesday, 16 July 2013 19:43 (twelve years ago)

one year passes...

Had no idea it was him in The Double tonight; I actually stuck around for the credits to see if his character was played by Don McKellar.

six years pass...

Been on a big Dinosaur/Mascis kick lately and am just now finally hearing the first Fog record. I knew one of the songs from that Ear Bleeding Country comp, but the whole thing is so good.

Witch is worth a listen too

Joe Bombin (milo z), Thursday, 3 June 2021 15:43 (five years ago)

Oh yeah, I've got both Witch records. Even followed him through Sweet Apple, but his Fog era was a blank spot for me.

Considering buying that Cherry Red comp of a solo acoustic shows, but I'm wondering just how much acoustic Mascis I actually need in my life.
