Is "The Very Best of Booker T. & The MG's" the greatest "background music to everything" album?

Because I'm listening to it now and I'm doing a bunch of shit. Man I Love It!

I love Booker T. and the MGs.

For an instrumental group, they sure were consistent. The Ventures started losing the script around '65 or so, but Booker T. & the MG's were (for the most part) on top of it right through their final original LP, MELTING POT from 1971.

(Although that MG's album from '73 - no Booker T. and no Steve Cropper - is a dud. I've never heard the two reunion albums...)

Booker T. and the MG's were an amazing band, and yes, they cna provide a great soundtrack to pretty much anything. I have a playlist of just their tracks from the Stax Box called "Onions". Awesome for anything.

that guy who played keybs on the '73 reunion, Carson Whitsett, is a songwriter and keyb player here in Music City. He cowrote the songs on the excellent Bobby Purify album produced by Dan Penn (you can read my review of it at the N-ville Scene website for week of July 28).

I saw the reunion-ed Booker T. in Memphis back in '93 or so. Amazing. Actually, though, for my instrumental puttering around the house thang, I usually end up putting on early Meters stuff, and I never get as much done because I'm too busy doing the white-man jerk.

Thanks for the heads-up y'all, I think I'll break out Hip Hug-Her for some of my house-cleaning this week...

You should also get a hold of Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story and watch it. Then get a hold of Soulsville, USA by Rob Bowman and read it.

Soul Men, an exhumation of 25 cover versions that originally went into the vault, is great if you want more.

when I listen to Green Onions while driving I feel like a secret agent. even when driving to get groceries it's like my life is directed by quentin tarantino. not sure why i've never dug deeper into their catalog but i'll give the greatest hits album a try - it's on spotify.

Their version of "Summertime" is bleak and hypnotic. It sounds like a dreary night in some dive cafe downtown. The sound of a low blue mood. It's fantastic.

A few years back I decided that Zony Mash (Wayne Horvitz's late 1990's quartet) was the most versatile background music. I could see Booker T. filling that slot, though.

I've lost my copy of this CD, but it is a really really great compilation and I'm thinking of getting a lovely vinyl copy so I can admire that cover art. I'd still rep for "Summertime" as being their greatest achievement (outside of their Stax house band work of course).

I saw them at an outdoor blues festival once where their lengthy, dreamy, floaty version of "Summertime" seemed like the most perfect music ever.

Never knew until today that Booker T. Jones had been married to Rita Coolidge's sister and hence was her and perhaps Kris Kristofferson's brother-in-law

That would have been an interesting album maybe (all of them together)

I just picked up a worn but cheap copy of Melting Pot and this record is a total jammer.
