"Singing SwordSlay"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 25 August 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

"Astral Milk-Fed Ganglia" is so far the only Vertigo track I've heard, but I'd really like to hear some of his vocal stuff.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 25 August 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

either "slitskirt onionroll" or "empty cutz". (sorry, i don't know how to do umlauts on my computer.)

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 25 August 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

ill help, scott!

"slitskirt öniönroll"

"light-mantled sooty"

Start with "Ion Wasserstoff" -- it's one of his more conventional vocal performances, but it's always been my favourite. On that song he sounds like a cross between Richard 23 (of Front 242) and what I imagine Kelly Clarkson would sound like if she was a man. I think you'll like it.

OTM

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 25 August 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

Cool, thanks, Barry. I'll try to d/l it when I get home.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 25 August 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

I believe that got remixed by Bill Laswell for his Anaphasiapunctumnexusthalassiaprotozoa collection.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 25 August 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

Oh God, what a disaster that was... Although the reworking of "Armageddon Lizard" with Jah Wobble was a come-down favorite in house in college.

My life with Baaderonixx and the Choco-pops babies (Fabfunk), Thursday, 25 August 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

Yeah but not when Vertigo's vocals were turned into a duet with Mike Patton. What was THAT all about?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 25 August 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

Call me perverse, but "Spent a Golden Afternoon Crawling for Ashes."

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 25 August 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

"Pabulum Pendulum"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 25 August 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

Admittedly I am forgetting "Revolt Into Spasm"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 25 August 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

Call me perverse, but "Spent a Golden Afternoon Crawling for Ashes."

Gee, I'd bet that you're a Gary Glitter fan, too.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 25 August 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

"Spunky Dicktation", no contest.

I Ain't No Addict, Whoever Heard of a Junkie as Old as Me? (noodle vague), Thursday, 25 August 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

Gee, I'd bet that you're a Gary Glitter fan, too.

Oh come ON. You'd bug out if they played it at Yankee Stadium as often as "Rock & Roll Part 2" -- and you know it'd be totally appropriate, except for the "molten masturbation" line which everybody hears as a mondegreen anyway.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 25 August 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

Touché.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 25 August 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

The cover of "Peggy Sue" from the BBC's "Pop Explosion"! Peel's introduction is classic.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 25 August 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

"(You Always Say That You) Love (Me But I Don't Believe You)"

1986, Denny dips his toe into synth -pop and finds the water surprisingly warm.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Thursday, 25 August 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

Oi, you punk Adam, you missed my review. He was already there five years before! ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 25 August 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

Alex, if you don't like Denny please take your pabulum-thirsty ears to another thread where you can auto-copulate with the similarly yawnsome pond scum who share your fetid and bile-drenched opinions.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Thursday, 25 August 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

Actually I was just out on my lunch break and kicking myself over a few missing entries for this question. Can't really decide between "Bacon Hour", "Five Kinds Of Bullshit", "Vaguely Impressive Automobile" or "All Hackney Mans Dem Fi Dead".

Maybe we need a POV?

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Thursday, 25 August 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

I've always been partial toward "Barbarian Cream" (the version on Adult Acne, obv.)

Mike Dixn (Mike Dixon), Thursday, 25 August 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

It's a pretty obvious choice but I'd have to say "Fat Man's Tango."

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 25 August 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

(Sorry, I'm a corny indie fukk)

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 25 August 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

I think it's interesting there's so little consensus on this thread, which just shows how varied Vertigo's career really was.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 25 August 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

There's that, but then there's the whole "one song having multiple names" thing confusing the matter. E.g., isn't "(Take Me To) The Soil of Kings" the same song as "Revolt Into Spasm"?

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

(TMT)TSOK is basically an early version of RIS that was uncovered when putting together the "Sunseeds for All!" boxset. I, for one, find that rougher early version pisses all over RIS.

My life with Baaderonixx and the Choco-pops babies (Fabfunk), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

denny's in (calcuable) influence on music is like salt in water: it may not always be clearly visible, but the taste remains.

latebloomer's rectal mocha latte (latebloomer), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

(incalcuable) influence, i mean

latebloomer's rectal mocha latte (latebloomer), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

I must disagree with Baaderonixx's assessment in that the audible sound of Vertigo pissing on his shoes ruins the ambience in that earlier version. There is a further conundrum in that there was the Xmas single version of the song released in Monaco entitled "Spasmodique Noel," but the descending horn arrangement replacing the electronispiel distinctly sucks.
