so there's a company "picnic" outside my window, and let me just say, these people are starting to undermine my newly acquired love of the Dan... right now they're on "Peg". Before that it was "Big Black Cow"...

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 25 August 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

now they're doing "Deacon Blue".

should I make a request for "Doctor Wu"?

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

Drown them out with anything you have handy. Do not, however, listen to the Dan itself. The negative association could ruin your blossoming love affair.

I suggest some dub.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

Try and trip them up and request "Kings."

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

request a joe jackson song instead.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

well this is in the middle of the financial district, next to the Transamerica Pyramid - and given the suicidal feelings this is evincing in me, obviously they should be playing "Black Friday".

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

you're lucky-there's never any music by my building. only symphonies of honking.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

"greenflower street" would be excruciatingly awful and fun --- but maybe too hard to play for a cover band. (sorry, i'm monopolizing this thread).

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe people can be snobby about lite jazz (or liter jazz at least) renditions of SD songs. last week I passed a restaurant on the harbor and there was a cheesy pianist singing "My Old School" and it totally made me smile.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

I once heard an upright bass musician playing and singing Led Zep's "All My Love" outside a theater in Dallas, and it was the most incredible thing I've ever heard.

jedidiah (jedidiah), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

shakey, if i worked closer, i'd so be over there eating lunch right now. THAT SOUNDS AMAZING!

JAXON (jaxon), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

that upright bass thing sounds a lot more interesting than what Shakey is being subjected to.

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

I don't feel lucky. Tho I guess this is marginally better than the Motown/Stax cover band they had last year.

too bad I forgot to bring "Ragged Glory" to work with me this morning, that'd drown this out nicely... now they're on some song I don't recognize. at first I thought it was "Daddy Don't Live in New York City No More" but they probably won't play anything that nihilistic...

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

is this over near 1st st? there is always that kind of noise out there.... aT least it isn't 2000 anymore, because this carnival of shit was a daily occurrance in the dot.com days.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

Jaxxx0n OTM. Steely Dan cover bands are AWESOME.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

i'm not so sure about this!

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

well then come on over and share the pain. (also the hot dogs)

this is on Clay between Sansome and Montgomery.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

now they're doing some kind of raffle.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

B-b-but do they got the Steely Dan t-shirts?

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

YOU COULD WIN!

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

but what's the prize?

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

Any prize that you're welcome to.

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

aaaaand they're back. don't recognize this tune either, must be from "Countdown to Ecstasy" or "The Royal Scam"....

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

and they're so loud, my computer speakers are powerless by comparison...

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

now its "Chain Lightning". this one isn't so bad for some reason.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

now they're doing a particular crappy (and too fast) version of "Reelin in the Years"

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

An encore of "Boston Rag" I hope.

drewo (drewo), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

Are you sure it isn't Steely Dan themselves doing this for a laugh?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

the guitarist is actually quite good, but he should know better than to attempt to do note-for-note version of the guitar solos on "Reelin". cuz he's flubbing notes all over the place.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

"Are you sure it isn't Steely Dan themselves doing this for a laugh?"

hahaha - well I took a look, and from 16 stories up the keyboardist doesn't *quite* look like Fagan. also someone else is doing the singing... the horns are the tightest part of the band.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 25 August 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

holy shit - they ARE doing Dr. Wu!

okay, they've won me over.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 25 August 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

hmmm... another one I don't know... surprised they haven't dusted off "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" yet. maybe they're saving that for last.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 25 August 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

they finished with "Do It Again". for some reason they're called "The Brick People"...? yikes

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 25 August 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

well fuck me, they are doing "Black Friday" as their "encore".

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 25 August 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

sounds like awesome to me. quit yr bitchen.

huell howser (chaki), Thursday, 25 August 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

is it over?

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 25 August 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

yeah, "Black Friday" was their closer. I suppose it coulda been a lot worse - they did some bad things to certain songs, but playing Black Friday and Dr. Wu actually impressed me.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 25 August 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

See if they'll play "What A Fool Believes".

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 25 August 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

I think the only other tune they coulda done to completely win me over would've been "Dirty Work" (which is my favorite Dan song)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 25 August 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

Damn, I would have requested "Soul Ram."

Joe McCombs, Thursday, 25 August 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
What is their weirdest song? Has anyone ever heard 'The Bear?'

57 7th (calstars), Thursday, 3 November 2005 02:29 (twenty years ago)

the cover band's weirdest song?

jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 3 November 2005 03:11 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...

There is a Beatles cover band playing on a boat outside my workplace right now. At first I just thought someone had turned up their computer speakers really loud.

jaymc, Monday, 17 September 2007 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

Fuck this, I'm going home.
