hey what happened to this awesome show once listed in a bunch of places as recently as ten days ago???
I can't find anything about it anymore and todd p's crappy site lists another crummy show tonite instead

it's supposed to be:

Thu25 New York City @ Tommy's Tavern (doors open at 8pm)
Islaja, Lau Nau, Kuupuu, Pekko Käppi, Tomutonttu, Davenport ?

tod plummer, Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

as far as i know it's still happening. didn't think todd had anything to do with it, tho.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

That gig was listed on the pfork news page today or yesterday. I assume it's happening. I wonder if there was issue with getting those Fins into the country?

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

yes now i hear that it still seeems to be happening

they already have been in the new york for a coupel days

what i meant to say before, thoghn, was toddp listed the show in his emails.. and then he started listing a different show same night same place

whateva, he is a total dum ass

jjjjjjjjjj, Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

Todd P is trying to promote shows in new york while stuck in a shitter in El Salvador with nothing but a cellphone and a laptop. Give the sad fuck a break.

Old School (sexyDancer), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

anyone planing on going to this?

bb (bbrz), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

todd is back from mexico, i ran into him last night. and probably he was involved with the show initially, then wasn't for whatever reason (never saw it listed on his site myself, but it's been on about a dozen others). not sure why this is such a big deal.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 25 August 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

Go if you are thinking about it - I taped em all last night (airing it Tuesday) and it was sublime / superb.

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Friday, 26 August 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone have access to a van to rent? See Lau Nau or Clay or someone there tonight --- they're in need.

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Friday, 26 August 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

yeah, they seriously need a van. or rather, those unsuspecting youth in other cities don't yet realize that they need a van so as to have this intimate and sublime music come to them.

Beta (abeta), Friday, 26 August 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

so how was it? i couldn't do tommy's two nights in a row, my eyes were stinging from wednesday's smoke.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 26 August 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

Saw Lau Nau - thought they were great. Kept thinking of Nico's Marble Index, which hadn't crossed my mind when listening to the record. But yeah, it was smokey and that small room was really packed.

TRG (TRG), Friday, 26 August 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

tommy's used to be better sans smoke and when tommy was actually behind the bar. no free bud drafts for me wednesday. boo.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 26 August 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

don't recall it being smoky. Lau Nau is five months pregnant, so maybe they asked to not smoke during her performance?
my favorite moment of the night was during the Jan Anderzen (the main Kemialliset Ystavat dude) solo set of looping taped voices and suddenly this drunk lady busted in and started yelling for "Evelyn!" it was perfect.

Beta (abeta), Friday, 26 August 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

it was pretty cool!
Lau Nau wasz defintiely the best!!
most organic and hippy folk vibes
cool songs sound like ghosts and stuff
wait that other acoustic guy was cool too.. his songs sounded real traditional.. he was playing those weird string drone things...
Pekko Käppi ???? his last song was awesome... awesome faltering speed up and slow down heavy rhythm

wasnt really into the abstract loop + noize stylings (Kuupuu + Tomutonttu???)
ok the evelyn part was pretty sweet actually, for like 2 minuts i wondered if maybe it was on one of his loops she said it so many times and in such a distant way... wait maybe i still do?
ok and i kindof liked that one brrrrrrrzn sound the double leapord kept making even though i dont usually like those dudes too much either

islaja was cool... kindof surprised about the effects she pulled out.. plus, she kindof bad at guitar! whateva the sloppines added to vibe and her voice is real powerful and spooky
o man@! when that robot rabbit started playing drums!! very cool and kindof scary

hooo, Friday, 26 August 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

o yeah@!
plus, i doubt that chick asked pepol not to smoke...
she was drinkin beer
so wahteva

five years pass...

New Islaja album is incredible. A bit more eletronic-y, a bit more conventional song-wise. Could potentially fill the Bjork-ish void.

Still not given the new Islaja a proper listen yet, but what I did hear sounds intriguing.

Harrison Buttwhistle (NickB), Thursday, 7 October 2010 22:28 (fifteen years ago)

The new Islaja is excellent, highly recommended! Great balance between an immediate kind of pop and something far more cryptic.

Islaja, Lau Nau, Kuupuu... WHAT HAPPEND??!

Interesting thread title five years on. What did happen? I thought Finnish Free Folk was the hot new thing at the time this show went down (I didn't live in NY). Now your average Pitchfork reader can't even pronounce Kemialliset Ystävät. Did this scene die/splinter/burn out? Everyone grew up and had kids?

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Thursday, 14 October 2010 03:52 (fifteen years ago)

There was a great new Kemialliset Ystävät album earlier in the year -- really, Fonal just keeps on ticking over as per usual, really.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 14 October 2010 03:57 (fifteen years ago)

three years pass...

new Islaja is out! apparently she's dropped the folk stuff, moved to Gudrun Gut's label and she's just doing electronic music now?

night boat to mega therion (NickB), Tuesday, 11 February 2014 18:08 (twelve years ago)

whoa! that sounds like a big change. I love all the other records so I will investigate this. Is this the only Islaja thread? I imagine most of the talk of her was on the Fonal one.
