First Song At Wedding Reception.

One of my closest friends is getting married in November, and he and his fiance have been struggling to find an appropriate song for their first wedded dance.
His fiance has rejected his first 25 suggestions, so he's looking for some help.
His criteria:

Has to be no older than 25 years
Has to be loving - not ironic
Slow
Cool - but accessible

Any suggestions?

"Home" by The Cure, a b-side to "Mint Car" released in 1997.

"Are You the One That I've Been Waiting For?" by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

Lyrics to "Home":

Every time I try to tell you how I feel inside
I always make the same mistake
Tie myself in knots
Sometimes even make you cry
When all I ever want to say

Is "nobody else in the whole wide world
Makes me feel this way..
Nobody else in the whole wide world
Takes my breath away"

Makes me feel so strange inside
Dazed, confused and starry-eyed
I couldn't love you more

Makes me feel the wrong-way round
Inside out and upside down
I couldn't love you more

And every time I try to tell you what I really mean
Nothing seems to come out right
And I end up murmuring foolishly it makes me want to scream
How I get so stupified

There's nobody else in the whole wide world
Makes me feel this way
There's nobody else in the whole wide world
Takes my breath away

Makes me feel so strange inside
Open-mouthed and mystified
I couldn't love you more
Makes me feel so upside down
But you're headed round and ruond
I couldn't love you more

Makes me feel so strange inside
Dazed, confused and starry-eyed
I couldn't love you more

Makes me feel the wrong-way round
Inside out and upside down
Oh I couldn't love you more

"Power of Two" by Indigo Girls is an honest, lovely song of devotion and dedication. As I have seen here and on Stereogum, Indigo Girls are for some reason considered hopelessly uncool and all-around bad, but "Power of Two" is a damn good song.

Al Green seems to be perfect for this set of criteria. Slow, cool and accessible, sincere about his lovin and oh damn! Its too old. What kind of rule is that?

My mate had a similar conundrum last year - he went with a first three
of:

The Ramones - Baby I Love You
Roxy Music - Over You
Kevin Rowland (Dexys) - Because Of You

not sure if the ramones one fits in the timeframe. You could always have Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, if that's not too MOR.

oooh, yes. Police! Is it a slow dance though?

I think it's important they know what to avoid, too: Billy Paul's "Me and Mrs. Jones," Carole King's "It's Too Late," and Black Flag's "You Bet I've Got Something Personal Against You" are red-flag all the way.

"Slave to Love" by Bryan Ferry

Or I second Al Green! Maybe "Let's Stay Together" counts as not too old because it was on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack...?

More songs to avoid: "Bloody Motherfucking Asshole" by Martha Wainwright. Great song under other circumstances, though.

The Carpenters' cover of "I Believe You." It's part of my someday wedding soundtrack.

"Never Ending Song of Love"

I´ve got a neverending love for you
From now on, that´s all I wanna do
From the first time we met I knew
I´d sing my neverending song of love for you

After all this time of being alone
You love one and other
Live for each other from now on
It´s so good I can hardly stand this

From 'Best of Delaney and Bonnie"

D'Angelo "How Does It Feel". WTF is wrong with you guys?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 26 August 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

I mean, seriously, what kind of wedding receptions have you guys been going to? Besides those of you who said "Total Eclipse Of The Fucking Haert".

Queen "Crazy Little Thing Called Love"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 26 August 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

haha, oh right, slow and cool

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 26 August 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

Are we all interpretting "cool" the same way? I don't think he meant "cool" as in "score some indie points by suggesting something obscure duderzez!".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 26 August 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

At my friends' wedding in '91, it was the Twin Peaks theme (let the irony debate commence).

TURN ARRRROOOUUUUUUND

The Original Jimmy Mod: Kind Warrior (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Friday, 26 August 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

Actually, the most effective first-dance song I've seen at a wedding was when my friends Dave* and Rebecca fox-trotted to Talking Heads' "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)." Not sure it'd work for everyone, though.

Cyndi Lauper - "Time After Time"
