Damn that's good, and what's this ... 50 BUCKS FOR AN ALL-ACCESS PASS? FOR FOUR DAYS OF MUSIC??? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?????

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 27 August 2005 05:57 (twenty years ago)

If I had time and/or money right now (mainly the latter) I'd be there in a second.

FAP?

jergins (jergins), Thursday, 15 September 2005 01:07 (twenty years ago)

is there anywhere i might find who is playing thursday or friday night?

drone/a/saur (william), Thursday, 15 September 2005 01:35 (twenty years ago)

it's laid out on the other thread:

Decibel Fest 2005 _ Might not suck this year: SHOCKAH!

Better than Decibel's site itself, which is a bitch to navigate.

jergins (jergins), Thursday, 15 September 2005 02:14 (twenty years ago)

thanks for the info jergins....the folks i wanna see are not on the nights i can get there, unfortunately. i'll have to console myself with catching monolake on friday here in vancouver.

drone/a/saur (william), Thursday, 15 September 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

Mind you, these things are always subject to change.. which is frustrating. So, as cryptic as the site interface is, it might be worth reinvestigating, just to be sure.

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Thursday, 15 September 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

TWOOOOO DAYS. :)

Also FYI, there are major bus route changes planned to take place this Saturday, which might make bussing around slightly more confusing than normal. (The bus tunnel will be closing for two years starting this saturday.) Just expect a lot of traffic in downtown that weekend, even more than usual -- and more confused riders.

I highly recommend avoiding a car if necessary.. unless it's really late (and you're sober if you're driving of course.) All of the events are talking place blocks away from each other around the square that is Broadway, Pike, Pine, and 11th st E. in Capitol Hill, pretty much..(Chop Suey is "off" over by 14th, Madison, and Pine -- a whole two blocks away, but whatever.)

It's recommended that, even if you have a full pass, GET TO YOUR CHOSEN SHOWCASE AT LEAST 30 MINUTES IN ADVANCE... each of these venues are, shall we say, intimate.. and it would suck if you came a long way and got shut out of seeing that special artist(s) you wanted to see... There will be day-of tickets sold at certain showcases for people without passes, too.

Later, I want to take the info jergins kindly posted in the previous link and reformat it for clarity.. (there are few things where I can't tell which set of artists is at which venue..)

Attention writers: if anyone is attending this festival, I'd be very interested in a review for Earplug.... please get in touch if you're interested. Thanks!

Later, I want to take the info jergins kindly posted in the previous link and reformat it for clarity.

please, please do. i cut and pasted it off their site, which was laborious and not that clear.

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 04:26 (twenty years ago)

These are all the venues pretty much. "db afterhours" is going to be announced at the time of the festival.. although if it is where I think it will be, it will be very close to most of the action.

NOTE: Bad Juju Lounge just this past week or so moved! They are now what was the back bar at Neumo's. The two are right next to each other now on the SW corner of Pike St. E and 10th Ave E. The Bad Juju used to be a few doors north of Barça...

..and Barça is where you pick up your pre-purchased festival passes on Thursday and Friday... (it's just a bar with moody red lighting... no shows there.) If you're not showing up until Sat. or Sun, you pick up your pre-purchased passes at the Broadway Performance Hall.

Hopefully the map above is a good guide to all the venues. As for scale? Well, everything is EASILY walkable, no doubt. The only "trek" is the Baltic Room.. which is just a 10 minute casual stroll (MAX!) downhill from Chop Suey, furthest east... all these other blocks east of Broadway take around 30 seconds to walk across each.

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 04:32 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, the Baltic Room robot should be in that triangle wedge, east of Minor Ave, west of Melrose Ave.

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 04:36 (twenty years ago)

Don't get me started on places to eat and record stores in the vicinity.

I'll just say.. Zion's Gate might be emptying out a lot of stuff this weekend.. they're a pretty comprehensive vinyl/CD/DVD spot for all sorts of electronic dance, dub/reggae/dancehall, and fucking metal. There's also Platinum records just west of Neumo's. Also, Everyday Music is on the east side of Broadway and just north of Denny.. right across from Dick's Burgers.

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 04:39 (twenty years ago)

come on donut. you're going to leave Jive Time and Wall of Sound out of the fun? Jive Time for that ACR or secret Pink Floyd LP and Wall of Sound for minimal techno/idm/experimental CD's and sweet selection of Graphic Novels/art books/zines too. Both on Pine on your way to the Baltic Room.

biz, Wednesday, 21 September 2005 04:42 (twenty years ago)

Like i said, don't get me started! ;)

(and I moved the Baltic robot.)

I don't want to jinx anything *knocks on wood*, but so far, the forecast this weekend is brisk and sunny.. lows 50s(F), highs 60s, maybe breaking 70s(F). :)

I'm going to have to miss out on Sunday since I'll be at the Waco Brothers but otherwise this should be good.

I hope people actually attend this thing, instead of get excited about someone else attending it in hopes of him/her writing about it for them instead (I tease, phil and sean)

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Thursday, 22 September 2005 03:43 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, I grabbed the full dB festival booklet at Easy Street tonight (where I was finally procurring that New Order Item 2-DVD), and will be rewriting the above information but now with set times, and extra stuff! Will be done here in a few minutes with that.

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Thursday, 22 September 2005 03:45 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, folks HAVE shifted around according to this guide.. most notably, Pan American is at the Ambient showcase, not the Experiment showcase.. that should have made sense initially, but I was just going by what the website said.

Also, Barça is having Decibel Festival action every night.. DJs doing at least 90 minute sets. I've included these in the notes as well, now

so FORGET WHAT I POSTED ABOVE, THIS SHOULD BE THE NEW INFO, UNLESS THE PROGRAM GUIDE IS WRONG, IN WHICH CASE, THE WORLD ENDS AAAAAAAAAAAH!...

Most importantly, re: db Afterhours

1) It was unclear which days they fell on. They are Friday and Saturday late night, respectively (NOT Thursday and Friday late night as I originally posted.) At least, this is what can be induced clearly from the program guide.

2) db Afterhours has a location.. not quite where i thought, but just as close. 1410 14th ave E. Cascadia Film Collective.. see Map above.

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Thursday, 22 September 2005 04:30 (twenty years ago)

i assume you can buy tickets for tonight's merck showcase at the door..... or is this not the case because of the whole 'festival' thing?

fizzcaraldo (Justin M), Friday, 23 September 2005 01:08 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, there's a cover for each show.. and also tickets for individual shows can be bought at Wall Of Sound records on Pine st.

It's an incredible deal to get the full pass if you're planning to go to at least three of the main shows though.. even better if you're going to hop around all of them.

...

So, I got back from the Merck showcase, saw the last half of Deru, and the first half of Machinedrum (I have to fucking work tomorrow... which is why I had to leave early.) Both were amazing, and while it's not packed to capacity, I'm very impressed with the opening showcase turnout.. everyone there is really having a GREAT time. Deru and Machinedrum sounded great too. More on them later.

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Friday, 23 September 2005 06:32 (twenty years ago)

Wow: good visuals, top sound, everything professionally put-together. This thing seems very well-run so far. We managed to see some of...somebody at the Bad Juju, then headed up to Chop Suey. Machinedrum sounded great; very full beats. And people danced! In Seattle! Altogether, a great warmup night.

jergins (jergins), Friday, 23 September 2005 06:38 (twenty years ago)

Um, basically, everything has been kicking my ass, head, fuck my whole body is bruised. Jerry Abtract, Kero, and Apparat on Friday night, Son Of Rose and Fennesz today, Akufen just an hour ago...

The panels and clinics today were great as well! Not as well attended by pass holders as much as other folks in town, which is interesting, but I think the afterparties are slamming too, because I'm guessing people are getting to bed way too late to attend the panels. I'm the only dork who's opting out of the afterparties for the panels... today's (Satrudays) panel on the future of music technology, where are we going, etc. was really great.

WAY too tired for details right now, but it's been literally hours of goodness from noonish to 3pm then 6pm to 2am. More of the same tomorrow... AIE!!

isolée, thoman fehlmann, Tipper = my head will never be the same.

Someone should hire Fehlmann to be a paid dancer! Damn!

donut hallivallerieburtonelli omg lol (donut), Monday, 26 September 2005 08:48 (twenty years ago)

brief hedfuk memories.

1. Bruno Pronsato was huge. Crisp, intricate beats and wonky melodies. This dude deserves way more credit than he gets.

2. Deadbeat kills it live. Absolutely stunning. The end of his set went all digital dancehall and in a moment i was wishing an entire genre would be born following his blueprint.

3. Akufen Sucks! Ha. Not really but he was the worst of the Saturday night performers. Completely overshadowed by Bruno and Deadbeat. Oh well. Points to Marc LeClair for chilling by the speakers Sunday night for Fehlmann and Isolee's sets.

4. Tipper is mindnumbingly boring electro breaks. 30mins is enough to understand this 1 Trick Pony. My friend loved his set but it wasn't interesting enough for me to really love it. The soundsytem overall was stunning so his "sound" was great but his tracks did nothing exciting.

5. Fehlmann is even more of an inspiration now than he was before and he's long been one of the pillars of electronic music for me. His attitude and personality really came out during his incredible set and the overwhelming crowd support was truly touching. I didn't know people would respond so favorably to his sound but he got a huge ovation. Wasn't his dancing adorable!?

6. Isolee's set was probably better than i remember because by that time i had too much to smoke and was drifting into dreamland when the opening notes of Beau Mot Plage started to echo around Neumos. I darted from the upstairs couches only to see Fehlmann running up the stairs from the backstage area to stake his place on the dancefloor for the epic cut. Truly and inspirational moment to see Pronsato, Fehlmann and Akufen giving Isolee his due respect during the Stairway To Heaven of minimal techno.

Decibel was a success in my opinion and i am eagerly looking forward to next year.

Noah Pred gets honorable mention for dropping seriously deep knowledge in seamless fashion.

I didn't see Lusine but my friends qoute was "Lusine changed the world with his set". Apparently new ambient portals were uncovered during what sounds like the most beautiful piece of ambient music ever performed. His set should be hosted at the Decibel website soon!

biz, Monday, 26 September 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

I missed a little of the stuff that biz caught, but everything he praised, very much OTM.

I disagree about Akufen. I thought his set was an absolute highlight. He had to be DRAGGED off stage around 2am, and this was after two hours, yet I felt it was all very very well done... the highlight of his set was when he kinda dropped his signature micro-sampling thump and just went full-on soul/disco/funk house music, with a hint of his signature.. which was when people were going off. The best part was his nicking of the Stetsasonic sampple "Talkin' All That Jazz"... specifically the part "Give an example".. it was repeated often enough such that it started to sound like "Gimme dat sample"!

I thought Tipper's set was amazing.. I think the momentum was a bit low as the crowd hadn't quiten gottent here yet.. presumably after the Ghostly vs. Kranky showcase and the after-dinner for those folks.. I do agree that there was that much variety overall in his set, but he does what he does VERY well, and I haven't heard Tipper in a long time.

But, VERY unexpectedly, as I thought his recent album was rather mundance, Thomas Fehlmann may have been THE highlight of the festival. His attitude was about half of it. His set was just perfectly crafted to bring the crowd slightly down and WAY UP, zigzagging to a climax.. I've been a longtime critic of the Kompakt shuffle techno, but Fehlmann's shuffle set-ender was the only time I responded positively to it. He really did no wrong.. at all. The most enigmatic and charismatic performer of the entire festival. I don't know anyone who disagreed.

Isolée was absolutely amazing too.. it was SLIGHTLY anticlimactic, but, jesus, would ANYONE want to go on after Fehlmann? He still pulled it off very well. The quick encore at the end was the best part... and it was really emotional to see Sean Horton come out, voice completely lost (or under tears), seeing how well Decibel went this year. And it looks like Decibel 2006 is DEFINITELY a go.

For a sophomore effort for ANY festival, I think Decibel paved a huge amount of ground, for any type of music. It usually takes a number of years for a festival to gain momentum, but the difference between Decibel 2004 and Decibel 2005 was a skyrocket.

I had a large number of friends fly from Austin to see this (besides the performers from Austin, of course.) They don't want to go back home -- and they love Austin. That's usually a good sign of a great music festival.

I can't wait to hear Lusine's set. I missed the entire ambient showcase unfortunately, but exhaustion set in right around then, and my friends and i needed some period of rest.

The Sunday panel was great, too, btw.. (the one with TJ from Igloo, Randy Jones/Caro from Orac, Kate Seekings, etc., Arne/Styrofoam). It was more of an abstract panel than the Saturday one, but a lot of interesting ideas and projections were floated about.

donut, it's not that i disliked Akufens set, but after Pronsato and Deadbeat, it felt like a bit of a let down. I left after only 45mins so maybe that was why i wasn't won over. If i had left Fehlmann halfway through, i probably wouldn't be buzzing about it today. unfortunately, Akufen has a bit of trouble beatmatching with Final Scratch and after the seamless mindfuk that was Deadbeat, Akufen sounded too clinical and linear with frequent instances of microbeats tripping over themselves unintentionally.

biz, Monday, 26 September 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure i get your latter statement, but I'll file under "agree to disagree" but..

unfortunately, Akufen has a bit of trouble beatmatching with Final Scratch

How did I know you were going to mention this? I wrote it down on a piece of paper, I think. "Biz is going to comment about how Akufen can't beatmatch because of a mild 7-second trainwrech which occurred out of the 2 hours he played, after which the audience cheered, Akufen smiled, acknowledging the slight mistake, moving on, and everyone still stayed on the dancefloor dancing. HOLY SHIT, SEATTLE SHOULD PROTEST POOR BEATMATCHING POSEURS!"

more fennesz comments pleeeeeeeeeease.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Monday, 26 September 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

I loved how the crowd in front responded to his trainwreck: we danced more and yelled and screamed and then he let out that wry little smile of his. funny and great and human.

jergins (jergins), Monday, 26 September 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

busted! after the perfection of Pronsato and Deadbeat, yeah I was expection perfection from Akufen too. His beatmatching disfunction didn't affect my enjoyment of his set, but i thought it was worth mentioning. i did cheer Fehlmann after his Laptop needed a breather during the 1st or 2nd song. Akufen's set was just a bit sterile coming after that krushing Deadbeat dancehall shit.

Fennesz was amazing. His was the last set of Saturday's ambient showcase, after Tim Hecker and some locals, in a theater that sat maybe 200. and it wasn't sold out! He started up with some stray sounds while the video got rolling, and as the set went on he made his way between laptop and board and guitar. my friend and I commented that it seemed like everything he did was very deliberate, thought-out, unhurried, but with a maximum of result from small actions like tweaking a knob or strumming a guitar. The sound was full and thick and warm, one long piece, with the video backdrop an examination of water, with very close, detailed shots at beaches and streams, then pullouts and pans. As the set went on I felt like I was rising up out of my seat. I think the last time I got that feeling was seeing My Bloody Valentine. He finished in probably about an hour, crowd thundering. then I walked outside, on air. fennesz.

Deadbeat is my pick of the festival for, 'I've never heard or heard of this person before but he just blew my mind.'

jergins (jergins), Monday, 26 September 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

we were discussing who was better live vs. their records and Deadbeat, Fehlmann and Lusine seem to be the winners in Live vs. Studio. I wish Deadbeat would put out some of that digital dancehall shit or a live album.

biz, Monday, 26 September 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

i'm really not a beat-matching obsessive headcase. the type of music Akufen makes and plays is so precise that any slight drift breaks the illusion of micro-perfection. i'm not saying those few instances of drifting beats was a set killer but it's worth mentioning considering the other sets i saw were absolutely perfect.

biz, Monday, 26 September 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

Actually, the place where Fennesz played had just under 300 capacity, and there were maybe three seats left? So, yeah, technically not a sell out but very close. Otherwise, Jergins described the set perfectly.

The match of the audio and visuals, especially when the glowing lights on water starting swirling starting looking like sparks, kinda created this mental effect of a mild chilly breeze. But yeah, 'was pretty much the laptop MBV.

I can't wait for google to get to all the web pages with all the gazillion uploaded photos from all of this.

I left [Akufen] after only 45mins so maybe that was why i wasn't won over

that's why. he just got stronger and stronger. the microclicky minimal stuff at the beginning was decent but it perfectly set up the full on HOUSE rapture that he kicked off by segueing from a Jeff Samuel track into Hardrive's "Deep Inside." second half was incredible, and I did like the first, I should say. though I missed most of the evening, and the weekend--personal shit, urgh. but I totally felt the voib and can't wait for the next one.

My picks for "holy shit, where did he/she/they come from??" was Son Of Rose, the opening act in the Experiment showcase where Fennesz headlined. Son Of Rose could have easily been a contender for a digital half of a Terrastock festival, were they still happening today.

The other pick would be Kero, from Detroit, at the ShitKatapult showcase on Friday. The stuff he was doing was essentially.. well, imagine the "Braindance" collective on Rephlex if they really came off like they cared to move the crowd's feet, instead of flittering in oddness and ironic retarded-ness... Apparat was great right after, and both Kero and Apparat did an improvised jam to finish off the night.

My pick for "holy shit, he's always everywhere, no matter where I turn" was Apparat, who seemed to always be at the next table or dancing next to me. Quite a distinctive face on that guy.

So OTM (but I've been following him for several months, so it's not like he took me that much by surprise). Son of Rose put on his best show ever. More than anybody on the bill (including Fennesz), Son of Rose exploited EVERY nook and cranny of the fabulous sound system. I swear, I thought at times I was hearing Subotnick's Silver Apples of the Moon or one of those genius Germans from Raster-Noton. This guy is going to be major.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 04:08 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm! This all sounds great. Might have to come up for the next one...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 04:11 (twenty years ago)

Well, fuck, Raggett's Pi live, chopped, screwed, and reggaetonned. Can I get my Decibel 2006 pass now already?
