Let's spend a good long time discussing the Backstreet Boys new video

Are the Backstreet Boys being ironic? The Backstreet Boys?! They're being ironic?

I can't make any comment on the actual music because I'm so awestruck by the video. It looks like they went all out and actually shot this on 80s video. It's actually... funny. Yeah. I mean the 80s hairmetal irony video has been done to death (Sum 41 did a particularly annoying take on it a few years ago in their Fat Lip video) but whatever room for humor there is in it, they had it. Especially the sad, mustached ending.

Unrelated: I saw the Backstreet BTM a few weeks ago. Kevin is the most detached, coldest person I've ever seen. When AJ had that alcohol problem, Kevin was just kind of pissed off about it. And one of them got really sick and the rest of the guys didn't even visit him in the hospital.

Oh and it hit me that they had some good songs - and I'm not talking about the obvious ones. I really liked "show me the meaning of being lonely."

Okay, this new song: What do you think?

MURPHY NOOOO, Saturday, 27 August 2005 08:32 (twenty years ago)

I'm not talking to you because you like a song by the Backstreet Boys

sickhead, Saturday, 27 August 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

That's very retro of you.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 27 August 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

Until the end of the video I had no idea who the song was by, and at certain points I was all "did VH-1 pull this from the 1986 vaults?" Shocking! VIDEO OF THE YEAR

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Saturday, 27 August 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

shit, I forgot about this for the best vids of '05 thread.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 27 August 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I saw this yesterday and it astonished me! Esp. Nick as BOTH thugged out moustache dude AND Dead Or Alive-jacking plastic metal singer!

The announcer on the video clip show said "and now this is the next Backstreet Boys tune" and then I hear some guy talking about anal muscles? WTF?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 27 August 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

Um...Did everyone just say that video is good? And did someone just say the song and video Astonished them?

Jeese, No wonder you people don't like my brother Mike (Telephone Poles), You guys are 12 year-old girls.

Voodoo Child, Saturday, 27 August 2005 23:04 (twenty years ago)

Voodoo Child get one ILM historical biopic.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 27 August 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

so you're related to that ilm hate figure mike telephone poles? you've really burned all your bridges now.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 27 August 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

I thought I made it clear I was. Everyone knows I am.

But as I said before, Mike got engaged and he has band members so he's not doing things for the computer anymore.

Voodoo Child, Saturday, 27 August 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

i thought we agreed to ip ban all people who associate with mike telephone poles. how did you manage to slip through the net?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 27 August 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

I actually have another brother on here. He lives with Mike and I'm in college. Plus I told some poeple that Mike and I know about ILM and they post on here sometimes.

Voodoo Child, Saturday, 27 August 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

Actually Mike wanted to join my band. Seriously.

sdkljh@dlsfkj/, Sunday, 28 August 2005 05:37 (twenty years ago)

Are you the the ear wigs or something?

Voodoo Child, Sunday, 28 August 2005 05:48 (twenty years ago)

can we get back to how amazing this video is?

nervous (cochere), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

This video is ridiculously funny.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

I love how it appears to have been shot by an amateur using a crappy first-gen camcorder.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

I have to give props to BSB's handlers for letting them do this, actually. You'd think that at least they stick in one or two shots of them wearing nice clothes and looking all nice, attractive and sellable...

Viz (Viz), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

So no acknowledgment yet that maybe the video for "Incomplete" was a bit intentionally overwrought as well?

Hillary Brown (Hillary Brown), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

BSB have always been willing to look completely goofy in their videos! See also: "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)", "Larger Than Life", "Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely" (heh)

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
I saw the video at the weekend and I'm still gasping in awe. It's...there are no words.

(The song is ace too!)

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 16 September 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

Hating on BSB is, like, so '97.

Are they working with Max Martin on this new record? I still think he's a fucking genius.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 16 September 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

Great video. I think it's more awe-inspiring BEFORE the concert, where the approach to "Heavy Metal Parking Lot" is much more subtle and -- dare I say -- endearing, than the Sphyncter (sp?) concert footage, which is way too close to smug BSB posturing than not.

Tony Bleach, Friday, 16 September 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

But as I said before, Mike got engaged and he has band members so he's not doing things for the computer anymore.

Aww. HAL9000 still misses Mike's stripteases and Thong Thursdays.

Who the hell do you THINK I am? I'm the goddamn Batman! (Barima), Friday, 16 September 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

I think the end of the video, when they're riding home, is kind of the best part because it results in identification with the characters more than any other part. If you've ever come home exhausted and dehydrated and dirty and possibly bleeding but from a show that was super awesome, you kind of know how they feel.

Hillary Brown (Hillary Brown), Friday, 16 September 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

Can anyone tell me the name of the song we are talking about?

Maxwell von Bismarck (maxwell von bismarck), Friday, 16 September 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

"Just Want You to Know"

Hillary Brown (Hillary Brown), Friday, 16 September 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha that song has a name?

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 September 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)
