Solo album stuff doesn't count.

1) The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore
Favorite moment: A gem through and through, but everything from "I can't go on..." onwards is particularly immaculate.

2) Everything under the Sun
Favorite moment: The chorus

3) Baby Make It the Last Time
Favorite moment: The festive brass

4) No Regrets
Favorite moment: "I woke last night and spoke to you/Not thinking you had gone..."

5) Archangel
Favorite moment: Gothic opening with organ and "Silence..."; S&J harmonies in the chorus with tamborine

6) Turn Out the Moon
Favorite moment: The lyrics of the second verse ("Happy people/in black steeples...")

7) Living Above Your Head
Favorite moment: The goofy but enjoyable backup vocals ("ba ba ba BAH" and "la-la-la-la-la-la...")

8) Stand By Me
Favorite moment: String break ---> key change with restatement of "No I won't be afraid..."

9) Love Her
Favorite moment: When the song gets loud/harmonies

10) I Wanna Know
Favorite moment: Gotta include a John-showcase, I guess. Guilty pleasure 'Teen Idol' moment, but still a driving tune and again, I love the 60s backup vocals.

Honorable mentions: "Baby You Don't Have to Tell Me" and "Walking in the Rain".

that disco song from Night Flights, Shut Out I think?

After the Lights Go Out for it's very melancholy Lieber and Stoler/Drifters style production.

Yeah I pick "After The Lights Go Out" for 60's stuff and "The Electrician" for the comeback years.

I think nite flights is probably more disco than shutout

Child of Flames from Nite Flights is very disco influenced, best song on the album I think.

seven months pass...
The Scott material on Nite Flights, obv.

I just heard "No Regrets" for the first time -- great singer-songwriter stuff, though the guitar solo is awful. However, I'm even more partial to "Lines", which they quietly snuck onto the third disc of the Scott box.

As for the Sixties stuff, in addition to those mentioned, I'd add "Just Say Goodbye". MASSIVE orchestra on this one -- and has a fabulous chorus with that minor key coda and the low brass.

"Make It Easy On Yourself" is a particular favorite of mine. The chord progression is gorgeous, and the hesitancy in Scott's voice is so suited to the lyric.

Indeed -- is the comp to get The Singles Plus?

I have to add an addendum to my initial post:

"Walking in the Rain" would now not only be in the Top 10, but near the top. Excellent through and through.

I'd also probably replace "I Wanna Know" with "First Love Never Dies", which has a terrific string break in the middle.

Another honorable mention would be their cover of Boz Scagg's "We're All Alone". I could never take this song before, but their version has softened me up to it.

If we bent the rules and could include solo album, Scott's "Angelica" from the first album is a current huge fave. Has anyone else covered this song? Beautiful...

Joe (Joe), Thursday, 6 April 2006 11:18 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and "Stay With Me Baby", too. Crap--maybe this should be POXX!

What are our feelings about the Walkers' 70's MOR material? Despite everyone's poo-pooing of it, what I've heard—"No Regrets", "Lines", "The Moon's a Harsh Mistress"—has been woozily magnificent. And has anyone heard "Tokyo Rimshot", which AMG describes as "Scott's surprising stab at Tomita-style electronics with a hint of Chip Davis, ideal for '70s sports highlight reels"?

Is it cheating to say "The Electrician"...?

Its just it stands out as THE track the bridges MOR Scott and Avant Scott... probably his most succesful artistically too... the lush romantic film theme music in the middle with OTT florid flamenco guitar shimmers juxtaposed lyrically with the joy of a torturer at work... genius. And if you cut off the dichord drone bookends and fail to take note of the lyrics, the central segment could be played on daytime Radio 2...

gek-opel, Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:21 (twenty years ago)

Wait, did you mean to post that this the other thread?

If so, that's a nice presentation, but yes, it's cheating — if only b/c that parallel fourth harmony on the "...that THRILL me...and THRILL me..." section is really unnerving and in no way MOR.
