Just another boring day in the executive suite: Beyonce on the couch, Ghostface dropping by, six-figure deals made by sundown.

(oop, pardon the typo in the thread title...)

That's a pretty great piece, actually. It's the article I've been wanting to read.

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 27 August 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

I especially like Jay-Z's Godfather-style lecture to Borino on negotiating the deal.

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 27 August 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

How I could tell I was reading the Times:

"I just want to dump some heat on you," Ghostface replied. "It's meaty already, but I just want you to add your little extra." (Translation: I've got some great new music that I'd like you to hear and I would appreciate your input.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 27 August 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

Aw, come on Ned. Did you really already know what "dump some heat on you" meant?

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 27 August 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

The context isn't THAT hard to figure out! I have this feeling somebody up there somewhere asked, "Wait, did he come over to talk about making Vietnamese soup with Jay-Z?"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 27 August 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

nah, they're into copraphilia

jake b. (cerybut), Saturday, 27 August 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

Godfather style isn't quite right, actually. It's more paternal:

By 5 it was time to talk numbers with Tru Life and his lawyer, who were waiting down the hall. "I'm supercomfortable with four" - $400,000 - Jay-Z told his senior vice president of finance, Joe Borrino. "I'm a little less comfortable with five. After that, I don't want to be in that business, especially right now. Only six hip-hop releases have done over 150,000 this year."

"So," Mr. Borrino said, "I'm going to say that we can't go more than five."

"No, because if I was hearing you say that, then I would ask for five because that means I can get five," Jay-Z explained. "You tell him that a typical first-time artist deal is between 400 and 450."

"O.K.," Mr. Borrino said, looking unsure.

"Be confident, man," Jay-Z said, noting Mr. Borrino's furrowed brow. "If there's a problem, come back to me, O.K.?"

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 27 August 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

I thought that translation bit was tongue in cheek, in keeping with the whole B-Boy-as-exec theme. But yeah, it's a good article. Not that Jigga's shrewdness is any surprise, but it's fun to see it in action.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Saturday, 27 August 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I actually appreciated the fact that the article didn't overdo the "Surprise, he's actually a good business man" angle.

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 27 August 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

i could figure out the 'dump some heat on you' but really, on a regular, ghostface's slang is pretty nuts.

i don't understand a goddam thing he's saying on Biscuits. as an example:

"I said Big O, hydro-face, pass me the sazone, it's on
There go son, tap out the hash bone
Half moon, he rock, three's fourth quarter length
No jewels, no rocks, it's not worth the spotlight
His gun tool, was a half a hill
That's a six digit slip behind five sticks, eatin' steel, fuck him"

WHAT?

pppp, Saturday, 27 August 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

I believe he's placing a call to an investment banker about a hedge fund.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Saturday, 27 August 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

FInally, the real lyrics to "Sitting Still!"

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Saturday, 27 August 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

"I said Big O, hydro-face, pass me the sazone, it's on
There go son, tap out the hash bone

Not too hard - Sazone = weed or hash, (I assume like the Spanish word "sazon" which means, I think, spice or herb) Tap out the hash bone = tap out the bowl so we can pack another one?

Half moon, he rock, three's fourth quarter length
No jewels, no rocks, it's not worth the spotlight
His gun tool, was a half a hill
That's a six digit slip behind five sticks, eatin' steel, fuck him"

Yeah, I'm not sure about this.

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 27 August 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

Half moon, he rock, three's fourth quarter length

rocking an islamic medallion under a 3/4 length leather coat, no other jewelry...take it maceo!

tremendoid (tremendoid), Saturday, 27 August 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I got the basic idea about not rockin much jewelry, but good call on the half-moon (although TECHNICALLY it's a crescent moon)

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 27 August 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

No jewels, no rocks, it's not worth the spotlight
His gun tool, was a half a hill
That's a six digit slip behind five sticks, eatin' steel, fuck him"

This guy isn't worth robbing, as he has no jewellery or diamonds on him. The only thing of any value is his gun, which is worth (I'm assuming "hill" is slang for a monetary unit). Five sticks: prison. Six digit slip: by the time he gets out of prison his loss of monetary earnings will be in the six digits? So he either shoots him, or doesn't shoot him, I'm not sure.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 27 August 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

I'm about 99% certain it's "pass me the Serzone, it's on." Serzone is an anti-psychotic. Ghostface alludes to his mental illness elsewhere in the album, on the last track.

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Saturday, 27 August 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

his gun tool, was a half a hill
that's a six digit slip behind five sticks, eatin' steel, fuck him

his gun isn't as strong as ghost's?
don't know about the five sticks, but i'm pretty sure he's saying that the guy mad a 100k+ mistake and he put the gun in dude's mouth and either scared him or shot him.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Saturday, 27 August 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

though the prison thing makes much sense too

Important News: Discontinuation of Sales of Nefazodone (Serzone)

On 10/02/2003 Bristol-Myers Squibb announced: "It has come to the attention of Health Canada that nefazodone (Serzone) has been associated with adverse hepatic events including liver failure requiring transplantation in Canada. Following discussions with Health Canada, Bristol-Myers Squibb Canada has decided to discontinue sales of nefazodone, effective November 27, 2003."

"Ghostface alludes to his mental illness elsewhere in the album, on the last track."

could you tell me where (on "love"?) he refers to his alleged mental illness? which brings me to my second question, what is your other evidence for the aforementioned allegement?

jake b. (cerybut), Sunday, 28 August 2005 01:34 (twenty years ago)

not quite sure what your point is about the discontinuation of Serzone - it was in use for quite some time before '03 - anyhow the line in question (in an incredibly personal song I think) is "love life, the ground we walk on/[love] my sickness, it made me strong" which combined with what everybody I know who's met Ghost = he's talking about psych difficulties though if you know of some other sickness I stand amenable to correction

nb before anybody gets all ruffled about this, I don't think he's "crazy" etc. - lots of us struggle with mental illness

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Sunday, 28 August 2005 01:42 (twenty years ago)

(also though the Serzone line itself! pretty much you've never heard of the stuff unless 1) you work in psych or 2) you or somebody you know is taking it)

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Sunday, 28 August 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

I really, really doubt the Ghostface line is about Serzone. In my opinion, a dude named "Hydro-Face" would pass you only one thing, and that thing would not be an obscure anti-depressant.

Hurting (Hurting), Sunday, 28 August 2005 04:37 (twenty years ago)

i wasnt trying to sound overly critical, i just wanted to know more! i mean he's been compared to kool keith before, albeit only on a lyrical level ...

jake b. (cerybut), Sunday, 28 August 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

Looks like a copy editor was a bit too enthusiastic with the translating, with Ghostface being introduced as Ghostface Killer

liber, Monday, 29 August 2005 07:24 (twenty years ago)

This is GR8. As an unreformed Wu fanboy, lyric analysis is one of my favorite pastimes.

I think Big O might be an ounce of weed. Hydroface could be a euphemism for the expression on his face after smoking hydro, which is unmistakable to another smoker as well as humorously alluding to the Big O face.

The disease that Ghostface has been battling for years is Diabetes, though. He has made mention of it many times over the years.

deathbypog, Monday, 29 August 2005 10:29 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, back to the article. I was surprised that a senior vice president of finance would need that kind of basic negotiating advice.

JoB (JoB), Monday, 29 August 2005 10:59 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I actually was too. Maybe he doesn't usually handle the negotiations? Maybe he just moved from another position?

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 29 August 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

The disease that Ghostface has been battling for years is Diabetes, though. He has made mention of it many times over the years.

I stand happily corrected! There goes my grand unification theory of Pretty Toney though & also if he's not nuts then his constant use of the term "faggot" makes him a total asshole

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Monday, 29 August 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

maybe someday the nyt will get tired of always running shit on jay-z, beck, death cab, etc.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 29 August 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

I guess it's a moot point by now, but as most anti-psychotics are effectively tranquilizers, they are usable as recreational drugs.

Eppy (Eppy), Monday, 29 August 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

By the way, what makes anyone think that Jay-Z's a shrewd businessman (in this role). He gives himself a C grade, he fucked up on the Bleek album (which wasn't *that* bad), radio's showing no interest in the new Foxy Brown, and he can't get a Freeway album out (which is what lots of people are waiting for...)

paulhw (paulhw), Monday, 29 August 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

I think it's too early to say, and the article kind of implies that

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 29 August 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

I actually kind of like the latest Foxy Brown single, but the sample sounds a lot like some other beat they used to rock all the time on Hot 97 but I don't know what it is.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 29 August 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

"I just wanna love u inside and out, girl."

Confounded (Confounded), Monday, 29 August 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

Jay's track record as a talent scout isn't too hot. He's certainly no Dre.

Sym Sym (sym), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

I like the caption - "Jay-Z at the 40/40 Club in Manhattan, which he owns"

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

"Jay-Z with his protege Memphis Bleek, who he owns"
