John Vanderslice Pixel Revolt

First spin through and I was kinda bored. Subsequent spins have revealed a really strong effort. John Darnielle helps on the lyrics and they are fantastic. The music kinda gets under your skin. High on my list of the best of 05.

Whoops, I just revived John Vanderslice C/D thread three seconds ago for the same reason. My first thought are there...

Your first spin resembles every spin I've given it. Granted, I'm not a huge Slice fan, but this one just borders on pointless.

Johnny OTM, but I do sorta like "Trance Manual."

my friend played keys on this record! I'll have to listen to it.

It's interesting that Vanderslice gets virtually no discussion on ILM (four very short threads over four years) despite the general consensus that the guy's pretty great... and the proximity to Darnie11e.

He should start posting here or something.

despite the general consensus that the guy's pretty great

?!

This very thread is only 50% in favor of his new album.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 28 August 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

Fair enough. I do remember the consensus on Time Travel Is Lonely and on his MG production work...

You Can Warn People Here!

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 28 August 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

OH. I guess ILM doesn't like JV after all.

My bad, although that thread was obviously unsearchable.

I like Vanderslice, especially Cellar Door. I've yet to hear Pixel Revolt though....in due time.

van der who (van smack), Sunday, 28 August 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

I think Pixel Revolt's less intriguing than Time Travel or Cellar Door, but I'll still stand up for him as one of the best songwriters around.

I like American Fourtracker best. "Me & My 424" and "Amytriptilene" (sp?) are amazing tracks.

Pixel Revolt, however, is indeed pretty dull. And I'm still mystified by the ultra-obvious Smashing Pumpkins rip. I mean, I don't mind it (authorship - pshaw; we're past it) but I'm not sure what exactly was it meant to accomplish.

authorship - pshaw; we're past it

I thought I had escape the campus of nineties pomo theory but NONE ESCAPE, NONE ESCAPE

BT, I'm obviously kidding.

OR ARE YOU!!! once the text escapes you you'll never know for sure

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Saturday, 3 September 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, we're past intent as well, aren't we! Walked into that one.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Saturday, 3 September 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

I like this album much more than anything I've heard from him since The Dream is Over.

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 4 September 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
Anyone else? I don't have "PR" yet, but would like to see him in Brooklyn this weekend.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

NPR loves him because he sings poetry. Poetry!!

He's a fine guy, met him a few times at some random shows and his albums are adventurously mild and disaffected.
