Hate being petty, but aren't these mostly from about 1990/91?

Anyway, Fascinating Rhythm by Bassomatic is a great tune, from '91.

I Ain't No Addict, Whoever Heard of a Junkie as Old as Me? (noodle vague), Sunday, 28 August 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

What do you mean by 'mid-90s' (as someone has pointed out, half that stuff is from 90/91)? What do you mean by 'dance'?

If you want poppy, commercial stuff I would add (in no particular order):
Dee-Lite - Groove is in the heart
Blue Boy - Remember Me
Snap - The Power
Young Disciples - Apparently Nothing
The All Seeing I - Beat goes on
Kenny dope & the buckethedz - the bomb
the goodmen - give it up
Robin s - show me love

If you want full-on Rave try N-Joi - Live in Manchester, and plenty more Prodigy singles.

Ice MC "Think about the way" & "It's a rainy day"

Wasn't "Exterminate" by Snap!

Usura did "Open your mind" (with the Simple Minds sample)

Rudolf (Rudolf), Sunday, 28 August 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

Yes, you're right, for some reason I always mix those two songs, even though they're not even that similar. They're both great though.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 28 August 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

And of course you need some Happy Hardcore (Dutch style):

everything by Paul Elstak

everything Charlie Lownoise & Mental Theo

Dune "Hardcore vibes"

Bodylotion "Always hardcore"

Critical mass "Burning love"

Rudolf (Rudolf), Sunday, 28 August 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

Not sure if this was already mentioned (don't see it):

Corona "Rhythm of the night"

Rudolf (Rudolf), Sunday, 28 August 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

Shit, I'd forgotten about Dune! Threads like this always bring back so many memories... I wouldn't recommend everything by Charlie Lownoise & Mental Theo; they used to produce the straight, non-happy variant of hardcore and gabba before turning to happy hardcore. Ever heard "The Ultimate Sextrack"? It consists of continuous vocal loops like "suck suck suck the penis" and "kiss kiss kiss the penis" and "up'n'up'n'up'n'down", divided by breaks such as "Don't you love the penis?" or "This is the ultimate sextrack!", all rolling over a hardcore beat. The only hardcore track I've heard worse than that was something played in the radio in the early nineties: it was merely a gabba beat with sampled loops of people vomiting, accompanied by occasional and very poor German rapping. The DJ introduced the tune by saying, "You know, I've been playing records on the radio for over ten years now, and this is the worst song I've ever heard!". It wasn't hard to believe him.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 28 August 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

Please don't forget Dannii's awesome "Everything I Wanted".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 28 August 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, can't remember that, how did it go?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 29 August 2005 06:31 (twenty years ago)

The album version was rub, but the single mix was great. YOu'RE EVERYTHING I WANTED! YOU'RE JUST ANOTHER PART OF ME. The title was whispered quite a bit in a surprisingly unrubbish way. And so on.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 29 August 2005 06:47 (twenty years ago)

Max Don't Have Sex With Your Ex

Mippy (Mippy), Monday, 29 August 2005 09:50 (twenty years ago)

Haha, and don't forget the follow-up, "Billy Put a Condom on Your Willy". Though there are actually two other mid-nineties Eurodance songs advocating condom use that are better than the E-Rotic tune: "Put It On" by Sin with Sebastian (sung from the point of view of a gay man) and "Don't Be Silly" (sung from a woman's point of view). The latter is particularly good, I think E-Rotic stole their chorus from that song. Here are the lyrics for "Don't Be Silly":

Hey you, don’t be silly, put a condom on your willy
Yeah yeah, yeah yeah, yeah
Hey you, don’t be silly, put a condom on your willy
Yeah yeah, yeah yeah, yeah

I said, not without a rubber (no!) Not without a rubber (no!)
C to the O to the N to the D to the O to the M
I said, not without a rubber (no!) Not without a rubber (no!)
C to the O to the N to the D to the O to the M

On top, on top, everybody on top
Put it on, put it on, put it on, put it on
On top, on top, everybody on top
Me no want no HIV
On top, on top, everybody on top
Think about it, think about it
On top, on top, everybody on top
Condom!

Hey you, don’t be silly, put a condom on your willy
Yeah yeah, yeah yeah, yeah
Hey you, don’t be silly, put a condom on your willy
Yeah yeah, yeah yeah, yeah

Keep it coming like I do, when I hear the music I’m humming
For once take a stand like we all do in our four girls band
It’s not about sex we’re talking (no)
But how to face the future (you know)
Love to make love, get sweaty and wet
But I always use me brains in bed
It happens every day that people get carried away
Stop fooling around, start thinking about the risks involved, I say
Become an expert, experiment, try everything, try to invent
Just don’t stop being silly and put a condom on your willy

Hey you, don’t be silly, put a condom on your willy
Yeah yeah, yeah yeah, yeah
Hey you, don’t be silly, put a condom on your willy
Yeah yeah, yeah yeah, yeah

You stop, not without a condom
Put it on, put it on, put it on, put it on
Ooh eh eh eh, ooh eh eh
Ooh eh eh eh, ha ha ha ha ha
On top, on top, everybody on top, on top, on top
On top, on top, everybody on top, on top, on top

- Hey yo, Snake, do you wear it?
- I don’t wear it, my man wears it
- And ah do you put it on or does he?
- Sometimes I do it, sometimes he does
- But ah it’s kinda like fun, it’s like a game, ain’t it now?
- Yep, and you have it in different flavors

Hey you, don’t be silly, put a condom on your willy
Yeah yeah, yeah yeah, yeah
Hey you, don’t be silly, put a condom on your willy
Yeah yeah, yeah yeah, yeah

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 29 August 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

And speaking of Sin With Sebastian, no mid-nineties collection is perfect without "Shut Up and Sleep With Me", one of the glory moments of gay dance pop.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 29 August 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha speaking of which what about Newton's "Sky High"??

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 29 August 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

Here's a few more obvious classics from the era I forgot to mention earlier:

Faithless: "Insomnia"
The Prodigy: "One Love" & "Voodoo People"
Chicane: "Offshore"
Apollo 440: "Ain't Talking 'Bout Dub" & "Krupa"
Technohead: "I Wanna Be a Hippy"
BBE: "Seven Days and One Week"
Orbital: "The Theme from Saint"
Felix: "Don't You Want Me"
Stretch'n Vern: "I'm Alive"

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 29 August 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

Galaxy FM (don't know the frequency I'm afraid as I am at work and the digital radio is far away) is doing an old school dance day and, in between lots of noughties chart dance, has been playing lots of early / mid 90s chart dance.

MC Sar & The Real McCoy are already mentioned. Though I have to say that "Run Away" and "Automatic Lover" are just as good as "Another Night".

Not sure if this song has been mentioned. I know nothing about it except one goes "I'm alive, the man with the second face...." and so on. Any help identifying this song would be greatly appreciated. I've tried all the lyric search engines and I'm getting nothing.

Imran Malik, Friday, 14 October 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

If memory serves, that's "I'm Alive", by Stretch & Vern. There were a slew of these kind of dance tunes in the late 90s, basically consisting of a speeded-up rap sample and a hard house beat. Also worth checking:

"Up To No Good" - The Porn Kings
"Wildstyle" - DJ Supreme

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 14 October 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

is that dj supreme one a tune where someone shouts "dj supreme" a lot? i remember stabnding transfixed in top shop on oxford st one time in 97/98? standing watching those huge tvs shouting "dj supreme!!!!"

i thought: "fuck yeah!"

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 14 October 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

The song's "I'm Alive" by Stretch'n'Vern. It's a fun tune, part of the late nineties "house tracks with helium vocals" mini-boom kick-started by "Renegade Master".
