"Celebrities who attended the party included Jessica Alba, Eddie Murphy, Paris Hilton, the Game and The Black Eyed Peas, but it was not clear if they were still there when the shooting happened."

God started this whole thing when he sent Katrina and the wave over there to disrupt things in the first place. I'm sure he'll later regret not taking out about everyone at the awards show.

I was trying to figure out how Suge Knight hasn't been shot before now. Is it because of fear of retaliation or what? For that matter, why does he get invited to stuff like this? Are there people out there who think he's misunderstood or something?

Crap pooped by Suge Knight's ass!

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Sunday, 28 August 2005 23:02 (twenty years ago)

There have been no arrests in the slayings of Shakur, B.I.G., Run-DMC's Jam Master Jay, or several other famous rappers who have been shot over the years.

It seemed unlikely that would change with Knight's shooting.

I totally don't get this. They arrest everybody else: drug dealers, mafiosi, contract killers of various stripes. The idea that "oh, it's just hip-hop" is so weird. Why aren't cops all over this shit? I'm not even calling for the clampdown, I just don't understand. I'd think most police departments would wet themselves to nail hip-hop types. It's very strange.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 29 August 2005 04:54 (twenty years ago)

They arrest drug dealers, mafiosi, contract killers of various stripes when they have evidence.

Some Guy, Monday, 29 August 2005 07:29 (twenty years ago)

I just find it hard to believe that murders of any other kind of celebrity could go unsolved for so long with nobody seeming particularly concerned.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Monday, 29 August 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

Well - I mean, I don't contest that the LAPD is a notoriously racist dept., but on top of that it's hard to find people who're willing to testify, and without good witnesses you have no case.

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Monday, 29 August 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

did any of the rappers listed have "fuck tha police" type lyrics? i forget.

sleep (sleep), Monday, 29 August 2005 12:16 (twenty years ago)

a better question is: did any of the rappers at the part have "fuck suge" type lyrics?

Maybe Vanilla Ice finally grew some balls.

mosura-san, it looks as though you're not the only one asking the question, and as though Banana Nutrament is OTM as far as the eagerness of witnesses to come forward...

"I don't think that what happened was any different than at any other event where you have a lot of people," said David Banner. "It's tragic that it happened and that the media magnified this so much."

amon (eman), Monday, 29 August 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

The party, hosted by Kanye West, at the Shore Club hotel in Miami Beach.

DOESN'T THE NYTIMES HAVE A FUCKING EDITOR ANYMORE???

Michael Burble, Monday, 29 August 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

It has lots of them. Which is often the problem.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Monday, 29 August 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

(Although that's an AP story, not NYT. But the same principle holds -- you often have editors who decide to shorten a sentence or break one long sentence into two, but who then don't quite do all the necessary cleanup. As a writer who's had mistakes edited into my copy, it always infuriates me. As a copyeditor who has edited mistakes into copy, I find it more understandable if no more excusable.)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Monday, 29 August 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

I stayed at the Shore Club!! Woo-hoo it was nice! Topless women at the pool! They have a Nobu there, and when we were eating, I saw Rev-Run and Russel Simmons waiting to get in...

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 29 August 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

The whole hip-hop scene is a scum-pit. That these "musicians" and "artists" are so interested in shooting each other is actually a good thing. Maybe they'll all wipe each other out.

y'know, he may be right, Suge's "musical artistry" is severely overrated and has been for a while.
