Jandek's Austin Shizzzow

I guess I should have expected this, but, Jandek's first ever US performance was tiresome and depressing. I can listen to his recorded work when in the right frame of mind - - and it was a slight thrill to see him walk onto the stage (for nearly the first time ever), but - geez! So boring....

Was anyone else there? Am I insane? Anyone know where his backing musicians came from? (there were two drummers and a bassist)

Amen,

Ha ha. Classic.

ha dude if you're a person who only likes to listen to his stuff "in the right frame of mind" why on earth would you go to the jandek show?

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Monday, 29 August 2005 01:59 (twenty years ago)

(I'm sorry, not "likes to listen" but can listen - were you expecting him to really GET WEIRD! or something?)

I was curious. I find it pretty interesting that this guy can remain virtually "anonymous" for 25+ years, releasing 30-some records. I mean, THAT is serious persistence and dedication. Sort of an artistic car-wreck, I guess. Jandek is one of the most prolific and mysterious "outsider artists" I can think of....plus, his FIRST show EVER in the U.S. was in my hometown.

And, I'd seen the documentary "Jandek on Corwood" a couple times. All that tweaked my interest.

Beta (abeta), Monday, 29 August 2005 13:08 (twenty years ago)

one of the drummers was nick from the weird weeds, one of austin's finest (and unjustly unknown) bands.

from seth tisue:

What happened

The Austin show went off without a hitch.

The representative from Corwood Industries sang and played electric guitar. A light from the side of the stage cast his twenty foot tall shadow on the curtained walls of the hall. Hat, guitar, curtain: iconic.

All the lyrics were new.

He was backed by three young local musicians, Nick Hennies (drumkit), Chris Cogburn (drumkit), and Juan Garcia (electric bass). Hennies lives in Austin and is a member of the Weird Weeds and of the Austin New Music Co-op; maybe he’ll blog about the show at http://www.editionmanifold.com/weblog/blog.html. Cogburn is a Austin-based improvisor who has played with Dave Dove, Joe McPhee, and others. Garcia lives in Houston and plays improvised music.

The show was videotaped by two camera operators. One camera was on a tripod in the balcony; the other was on the shoulder of an operator who moved around during the show, sometimes getting quite close to the singer.

The crowd was silent after the house lights dimmed, and kept silent as the band took the stage, but there was enthusiastic applause after each song, and a standing ovation at the end, although we didn’t all stand up until after Jandek himself had already left the room.

I’ll post more, including some of the lyrics, when I get back to Chicago.

Here’s a review of the show that appeared online: http://www.austin360.com/xl/content/arts/xl/2005/09/reviews_09-01-05.html. Be sure to also follow the “See more Jandek photos” link.

If you see any other reviews of or discussions about the show on the net, please let me and/or the Jandek mailing list know so I can link to them from here.

I haven’t heard any official word about the New Orleans show, though I suspect it may not happen, due to Hurricane Katrina; the city has been evacuated. The web site for the show is currently offline (as of Monday at noon), as is Tulane University’s whole site.

I'm done at Aspyr... My last deal with them was co-producing the "Stubb's The Zombie" soundtrack, which is pretty cool. Comes out October 18th...check it out: www.stubbsthezombie.com

i know there are more important things about which i should be concerned, but one of the big bummers of being from new orleans is this jandek ticket in my wallet for the show he was going to play there friday that isn't going to happen.

bobb x, Wednesday, 31 August 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

nor will he be moving to PEN-SA-CO-LAH FLOR-I-DA as pondered.

Old School (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

"Chadly," you're a fucking idiot. Why the fuck did you go, because you were "curious"? The show sold out, I wish someone else could have had your ticket. If you think that show was boring, you're more boring than I thought was possible. And after "meeting" you a few times, I really, really did not think that was possible.

So put on your Flaming Lips album, and go screw a fence while you're at it.

I saw the Austin show. It was horrible. I actually think it might have been better if they hadn't had the drummer in the middle (the one between the bass and the other drums), but I can't be totally sure. The show reminded me of a lot of stuff going on in Houston in the 80's. Whoever got the backing musicians for Jandek is to blame. These guys were amateurs at improvisation. I mean, listen to the Scotland show and hear what how different it can sound with decent backing musicians. I am sure the New York show will kick so much fucking ass. I am disappointed I won't get to see that one.

Yo What, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and kick yourself if you missed it. There was a guy trying to GIVE AWAY a ticket outside as they were letting people in (he said his wife couldn't make it) and I didn't see anyone taking it.
