1992 is the clear winner for "Best VMA's Ever."
2001 is the clear winner for "Worst VMA's Ever."

I'm having trouble sorting out the rest.

92 < 93 (< 97)

Al (sitcom), Monday, 29 August 2005 03:03 (twenty years ago)

I remember being disappointed by '93 after '92 had set the bar so high.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Monday, 29 August 2005 03:10 (twenty years ago)

Remind me, what was so good about 93 again? Besides Neil Young and Pearl Jam..

billstevejim (billstevejim), Monday, 29 August 2005 03:11 (twenty years ago)

the best one was the one where nirvana were told not to play lithium for some reason but they did anyway and krist ended up knocking himself out with his bass.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 29 August 2005 03:14 (twenty years ago)

whatever year axl and tom petty did free fallin = teh best

2001 and 2005 are tied for the worst. 'hey, a potentially devastating hurricane is about to sink one of america's most storied cities -- let's make the finale ALL ABOUT RAIN'

maura (maura), Monday, 29 August 2005 03:14 (twenty years ago)

Correct, that would be '92.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Monday, 29 August 2005 03:15 (twenty years ago)

Which year was it that Diddy did "I'll Be Missing You" with Sting? That was up there as one of the worst.

Candicissima (candicissima), Monday, 29 August 2005 03:16 (twenty years ago)

Refresh my memory. Why didn't MTV want them to play Lithium? I can't remember. (xpost)

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 29 August 2005 03:18 (twenty years ago)

Didn't '93 feature the unveiling of oral sex Janet? That and the Rupaul-Berle tiff make it one of the greats.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 29 August 2005 03:18 (twenty years ago)

I thought they didn't want them to play Rape Me and the went from the intro to Lithium just to fuck with people...?

The Original Jimmy Mod: Kind Warrior (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Monday, 29 August 2005 03:21 (twenty years ago)

That sounds about right.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 29 August 2005 03:22 (twenty years ago)

Best host: Chris Rock
Worst: Wayans Brothers (god was it awkward when they tried to do a bit about celebrities beating up Chris Rock. It was hard to watch)

Was Ben Stiller the last non-black host?

billstevejim (billstevejim), Monday, 29 August 2005 03:34 (twenty years ago)

Oh wait, Jimmy Fallon. My mistake.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Monday, 29 August 2005 03:34 (twenty years ago)

Haha... Macy Gray kept on saying "mah bush."

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 29 August 2005 03:39 (twenty years ago)

Wayans Bros = worst host
Christian Slater = runner-up

Chris Rock = Best Host

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Monday, 29 August 2005 05:26 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah, Dana Carvey dressed up as Garth and drummed along to a U2 concert video feed

kingfish 'doublescoop' moose tracks (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 29 August 2005 05:38 (twenty years ago)

Plus all the bumpers were done by Liquid Television people if I recall...

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Monday, 29 August 2005 05:42 (twenty years ago)

Okay, I looked up 1992, and just so there's no confusion as to what the best year is...

01 Garth & U2
02 Ice T presents an award and blatantly mentions "Cop - like, Killer dude."
03 Pearl Jam & Chili Peppers performing back to back
04 Fartman & Luke Perry's introduction
05 Nirvana sends a Michael Jackson impersonator to accept their "Best Alternative" award
06 GNR and Elton John rocking out on "November Rain"
07 Liquid TV bumpers including early clips of Beavis & Butthead
08 GNR accept their "Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award" and Axl closes his speech stating "And one more thing, this award has nothing to do with Michael Jackson. Thanks."
09, 10, 11, etc - The "Rape Me" tease, Grohl's incessant headbanging, Kurt fudging the lyrics & song structure, unrecognizable stagedivers, Chris Novoselic's bass toss and subsequent stumble off-stage, Kurt knocks over the amps and trips over the drumset while Grohl says hi to Axl 4 or 5 times - I'm not sure how it's possible for a VMA performance to be more eventful than this one.

This VMA's was my "Beatles on Ed Sullivan."

billstevejim (billstevejim), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 03:45 (twenty years ago)

Grohl says hi to Axl 4 or 5 times

hahahahaha

the food has a top snake of 1 (ex machina), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 03:54 (twenty years ago)

I think it's also where Phil Hartman did his Ed McMahon to Carvey's Carson and called Jay Leno a "Lantern-Jawed Freak"

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 04:06 (twenty years ago)
