Word on the Internet streetz in Minneapolis is that Tommy Stinson has joined Soul Asylum to be in the rhythm section with ex-Prince dude Michael Bland. This is on good authority.

Please remain calm.

Wasn't TS in G&R for a while?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 29 August 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

Yes, Tommy Stinsen did play in the short-lived "Guns N Roses" lineup that featured Buckethead, Brain, Bernie Worrell, that guy from Nine Inch Nails, and some cornrowed faetty.

What, Cindy Blackmon was not available?

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 29 August 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

yep...sounds like he's dissed Axl.

if this were like 1988 in Mpls this news would bring about Armageddon. Today, I expect perhaps five replys.

sorry for the double post.

I love Bland in other bands, but I've always thought he was wrong for Soul Asylum.

Pete Scholtes, Monday, 29 August 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

"always"? If he can play behind Westerberg, I'm sure that he'll do fine with Soul Asylum.

Hell, you can say the same for Tommy.

MICHAEL BLAND IS IN SOUL ASYLUM?!

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 29 August 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

is Michael Bland the dude that dressed like a nurse?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 29 August 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

It seems like a waste, but MB is a pro and it's gotta be paying some bills.

Do you ever go see Dr. Mambo's Combo, Matt?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 29 August 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

"Cornrowed Faetty"

Legroom at the Vista (Bent Over at the Arclight), Monday, 29 August 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

Tommy's prolly still in GNR. I last time I talked to him, he basically said Axl had no problem with him doing his own side project stuff. Tommy's on some sort of retainer.

Michael Bland is a monster, and more than Soul Asylum needs. Then again, so was Sterling Campbell (now with Bowie), who I think played drums for them for a while.

yep...I didn't "get" what was so good about them. Seemed like Bunker's R&B type show band stuff....Bland is a pretty overrated drummer IMO...studio hack-ish. not interesting to me.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 29 August 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

he's no Dave King!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 29 August 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

This is the most OTMiest thing I have ever read in my entire life.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 29 August 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

Damn, I've been blown away every time I see them. SONNY T on bass, and when they get those five singers up there improvising harmonies and going off it's fucking ridiculous. The skinny guy who doubles on guitar is my favorite...ever hear them do The Payback?

What's amazing about Michael Bland is that he's a fucking CLOCK with the beat, and on that gig he busts chops while staying completely in the pocket. What more do you want from a Prince drummer?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 29 August 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

Haha, I see Dave King every chance I get as well, but he could never do the Prince gig or the Combo gig (or more accurately, he wouldn't).

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 29 August 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

but he could never do the Prince gig or the Combo gig (or more accurately, he wouldn't)

didn't he used to drum for Terrance Trent-D-Money though? that's close to Prince!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 29 August 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

I don't think so Matt, I've certainly never it before.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 29 August 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

really?hmm I swear I heard that...I'll have to do some Internet sleuthing.....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 29 August 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

he basically said Axl had no problem with him doing his own side project stuff.

But wasn't it Axl that squashed a Replacements reunion a few years ago?

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 29 August 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

But wasn't it Axl that squashed a Replacements reunion a few years ago?

?? I think the only time it's ever been close was at the benefit show for Karl Mueller from Soul Asylum....Westerburg basically said that was the only time he ever contacted the guys about doing it and they were busy/didn't want to do it and so now it will likely never happen.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 29 August 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

This is the most OTMiest thing I have ever read in my entire life.

yet, it's gotten many more than 5 replies. so, wtf?

michael burble, Monday, 29 August 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

And only six of them mention the band in the thread header!

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 29 August 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

this might be the first mention of Dr. Mambo's Combo on ILM though. That's success!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 29 August 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

I feel cheesy for using the word SQUASHED now. I must've unconsciously buried that headline.
