ERIC B DEAD?

No, No, No… Here it is y’all – as far as I know Eric B is still alive and well. The source of this wack rumor is some bone head that thought it was cute to write a fake news story stating that the famous DJ was shot and killed. Well, it’s not true (to my knowledge) and, if you read the story, you can easily tell it’s a fraud. Eric B for president still…I think he could do better than the current commander-in-chief.

Now, Erik Watts, on the other hand...

he came into my work around the time this thread was created. didn't say much. stood large.

the rumor always was he was just the drug dealer who funded rakim, and marley marl was the real creative force behind their early work. really not sure what i make of this rumor.

didn't he also fun craig mack's sophomore effort?

as a scratch dj, he was miles behind the magic mike/mr. mixx/deuce ace detonator too tough types in 1987. but the production was on par with what marley was trailblazing in 87 (and shocklee took to impossible heights by year's end).

I think dude knows chinese arithmetic does not hold up as a 1987 piece...

Karp ruled.
Worst Case Scenario were probably the last great hardcore band of the 90s before the whole scene turned lame. The 7" on Lookout is probably their best release. I was also at that show in R.I. Very underrated group.

Young Ginns were, at best, decent.

Unwound wise, i'm a "new plastic ideas" and all the 7" s around that time (teh one on Gravity, "m.k ultra"/"totality" and the one on Troubleman) kinda guy.

I never checked the Replikants.

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 19 December 2008 22:05 (seventeen years ago)

probably because i was a sissy soft punk into shit like this at the time

Lighter Shade of Brown - On A Sunday Afternoon

Candyman - Knockin Boots

xpost matt.

nemesis was HUGE HUGE HUGE in north florida amongst the white, suburban, lowrider dudes thanks to the Munchies' bassline.

I wasn't aware that Ron C was part of they crew until recently.

I LOVED Ron C's Miami Bass tracks. One appeard on Yo a couple times

Ron C - Do Dat Danz (not real video though)

STR8 FONKY HOMMIE (PappaWheelie V), Friday, 19 December 2008 22:08 (seventeen years ago)

his other miami style track from that album

Ron C - South Dallas Drop

STR8 FONKY HOMMIE (PappaWheelie V), Friday, 19 December 2008 22:08 (seventeen years ago)

I mean every lowridin dude in the late 80s was playing this, and I was never a fan at all. still doesn't work to me, but i can see why that bassline was their thing before the car audio explosion of Techmaster and his ilk.

Nemesis - Munchies For Your Bass

STR8 FONKY HOMMIE (PappaWheelie V), Friday, 19 December 2008 22:11 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i remember ron c tapes were big with my friends that were into car stereos and shit...also dj magic mike

speaking of miami bass, the original Atlanta MC MC Shy D does a great 2 Live Crew circa Move Somethin' rip:

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 19 December 2008 22:12 (seventeen years ago)

^^^ Dj Toomp's first record, before he got big with T.I

STR8 FONKY HOMMIE (PappaWheelie V), Friday, 19 December 2008 22:13 (seventeen years ago)

the shy d record was toomp??

just because i saw it on the bottom of the nemesis video, back when Twista was Tung Twista and dressed all dorky like Del/native tongue ATCQ type clothes

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 19 December 2008 22:17 (seventeen years ago)

actually, the first toomp record to my knowledge:

1986
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f185/PappaWheelie/1986RahiemTwins.jpg

Shy D relied on Miami to get on while Arvis Records laid the real groundwork for Atlanta's Hip-Hop scene at home.

Rahiem the Dream and Kilo both are 80s Atlanta heroes.

Kilo - America Has a Problem, Cocaine

xp, yeah, DJ Toomp and Mike Fresh were Shy D's DJs, who became a production team known as the ODS, and produced some of 2 Live Crew's Sports Weekend, and I think some early Poison Clan

STR8 FONKY HOMMIE (PappaWheelie V), Friday, 19 December 2008 22:19 (seventeen years ago)

Wow...I had no idea he went that far back...crazy...

In other "where were they then":

Before they were Mobb Deep, they were lil' kid rappers called Poetical Prophets, but still talking a surprising amount of ganster shit...i actually remember reading about them in The Source's Unsigned Hype column:

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 19 December 2008 22:22 (seventeen years ago)

I've done a fairly long interview with Shy D. We keep meaning to pick it back up in the near future.

Very interesting on the Miami/Atlanta relationship.

Shy says some guy named Mojo was the BIG act in town in the early 80s, and Shy always says Mojo is the true man that deserves credit as Atlanta MC #1.

Never could find anything on Mojo.

xp

In other "where were they then":

I feel really stupid not knowing the DIC crew story until this past weekend, which accounts for so many mid-90s dudes (Showbiz, AG, Lord Finesse, etc)

STR8 FONKY HOMMIE (PappaWheelie V), Friday, 19 December 2008 22:23 (seventeen years ago)

i really don't know much about old school atlanta/south shit...get that book done!

i think jay-z got a rhyme of the month for this guest verse on orginal flavor's "Can I Get Open?"

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 19 December 2008 22:27 (seventeen years ago)

hot damn that's good. never heard that.

i really wonder who was instrumental in reducing hip-hop beats form shocklee inspired excess down to early 90s minimalism like that. especially when andre harell cluttered up 1990/1991 with New Jack R&B
