iPod: Can you create playlists (or que the next songs) "on the fly"?

Sure, when I'm using iTunes at home I am able to create playlists. But, is there a way to do this with my iPod standing alone? And is there a way to que the next songs without interrupting the current one playing?

you can que songs onto "on the go" playlists without interrupting the song that's playing (just hold the middle button for a few seconds with the song selected). you can then edit these once you get back to itunes. ANNOYINGLY there's no way to add a song to a playlist if you have yr pod on shuffle (this is my biggest bugbear with the damn thing)

2nd that. and i wish that shuffle wouldn't play the same damn songs over and over again. or that you could at least adjust the shuffle settings.

i wish i could insert the shuffle function into a playlist. as in, there are five songs i want to hear and then i want it on random.

the "party shuffle" lets you pick how many recently played and not-so-recently played songs you want. it also lets you play higher-rated songs more often if you want.

You can, if you want what I think you want, via Settings > Shuffle > Songs.

How can iPods be this hard to use? Sheesh

if you think the same songs are getting played when you use shuffle: create a smart playlist, with "playcount" set to zero and live updating. turn on shuffle to "songs" as eyeball kicks says, and when you use that playlist it'll play your unplayed songs, then remove them from the playlist. no more repeats!

yeah but if you do that it only removes the songs from the zero playlist the next time you connect to your computer, no?

having said that i love my live update zero count playlist. also it allows you to weed out the shit songs that deserve deletion.

i have a "new adds" playlist that removes songs whenever they've been played twice.

ian quiche-lorraine (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 01:23 (twenty years ago)

hmmm never thought of doing that. so you set it to playcount

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

oops... so you set it to recently added and playcount less than 3?

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

i also rate things as i play them, so i have the smart playlist weed out anything with a rating.

i clearly am remiss in not taking enough advantage of smartlists. i do rate things as i play them but just use the top rated automatic playlist to listen to them.

I have playlists for various things like... "All added in last 2 weeks" etc.

oh yeah i have those ones too. and 'haven't listened to since march' etc. but i still think i could make better use of the function.

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 07:06 (twenty years ago)

but does the iPod keep track of what it plays (ie. i thought the playcount only reflected what had been played with iTunes)

Baaderonixx and the choco-pop babies (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

yeah it does. when you have your ipod hooked into itunes and you are browsing the ipod library, it reflects the playcounts on the ipod. the itunes library on your computer has a different playcount.

i think though, if you set up a playlist like ian quiche-lorraine (heh) suggests, that it won't 'kick out' songs that have been played twice until you hook it up to your computer again. not sure about this. i've wondered if this happens if you let the ipod go to sleep as well but mine never gets a chance to do this so i haven't tested it.

wankers.
