Inspired by the Don't Look Back series of gigs going on.

aka list your favourite album...

World Domination Enterprises, "Let's Play Domination"

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

The choice for some of the albums on the "Don't Look Back" thing is really perplexing. Agh well, what do I know, I'm not down with The Kids any more.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

Predictably I'm thinking 90s/00s dance/electronics initally. Seeing as it's never been performed and almost certainly never will be, I'll say Daft Punk's 'Discovery'.

Ditto Boards Of Canada - any of the albums really, but perhaps 'Geogaddi' the most.

I wish Orbital's farewell tour had been a big series of gigs where each album was performed in it's entirety on different nights. By the end, so much great stuff was cut from their final setlist it didn't have the same impact (arf) as their mid 90s shows.

But I guess it doesn't work too well for bands whose most popular album does not feature their most popular track (still Chime?). I read that The Stooges DID perform songs not on Funhouse in addition to the entirety of that album though.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

1 by Pole if he'd actually do it live. Or Sextant by Herbie Hancock.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

MBV - Loveless

because it's my all-time favorite, and because I friggin' hate that I'll never get a chance to see them live.

(anyone here lucky enough to see them back when they were around? I'm curious as to how their live shows were.)

Lady May, Wednesday, 31 August 2005 13:07 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but that's because Funhouse was, like, 30 minutes long. Not much of a show there!

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 13:08 (twenty years ago)

Mr. Bungle - California.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

Well, even with the 'fair enough' length of most albums, that's only a 45 minute gig.

NightTime by Killing Joke
A Night at the Opera by Queen

I think Kid A performed live might've been interesting.

I saw MBV twice on the Loveless tour, first time was unbelievable, second time they were shown up by the opening act, Pavement.

Sing To God Parts 1 & 2 by the Cardiacs. In an opera house.

(Saw MBV for the first time on 13th Feb 87, supporting the Soup Dragons "Head Gone Astray" tour. My attention was totally commanded by the drummer Colm set up right at the front of the stage and just going NUTS the whole way through the set. Totally intense. I saw them 4 or 5 more times over the next couple of years with the newer line-up after the old lyricist/singer dude left. Completely new set of songs by then. Very heavy and loud, tons of feedback and sonic mayhem of all sorts. Even more intense than before, but I will always remember the first time the best.)

Souvlaki or The Perfect Prescription for me..

poortheatre (poortheatre), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

"junkyard" by The Birthday Party. Since Tracey Pew is no longer around, they could get Adamson to play bass.

kwhitehead (stephen schmidt), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

I saw MBV twice on the Loveless tour, first time was unbelievable, second time they were shown up by the opening act, Pavement.

I do not believe I would have agreed with you, even if they were 'off' (and they were never off).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

Bilinda's vocals always made me feel like my head was being scalped... but in a good way!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

And yeah, Colm was just insane.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

Also, you never know, they may yet play again at some point.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

I seem to recall a similar thread to this one which is also excellent.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

Phish one year almost covered Loveless at a Halloween gig ... Trey Anastasio got out-voted, though, and they wound up doing (I believe) VU's Loaded. Phish doing Loveless would have been interesting, just to see how they would go about capturing all the effects.

I saw Metal Machine Music done in its entirety by a German cellist with a distortion pedal! It was awesome and very faithful.

Sundar (sundar), Friday, 2 September 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

He even did the abrupt pauses between tracks.

Dark Side of the Moon
I believe Phish (??) played the White Album all the way through, and Trey wanted to do Loveless...

Phish have covered at least 5 entire albums on almost consecutive Halloweens - I think they skipped one year between 1994 and 1999. The White Album, Quadrophenia, Remain In Light, Loaded and Dark Side Of The Moon. These were all during the 90's. I don't think they did any during the 00's. They've also performed a few of their own albums all the way through, but lots of bands have done that.

I got to see They Might Be Giants do the whole Flood album in order a few years ago. They did "Fingertips" and everything. It was bloody fantastic.

andrew s (andrew s), Monday, 5 September 2005 01:14 (twenty years ago)

"This Nation's Saving Grace" was done by some Fall tribute band a few years ago. There were mp3s of the whole thing online.

robertw, Monday, 5 September 2005 02:36 (twenty years ago)

Since this thread question is a total stoner question, for me it would have to be Houses of the Holy.

tipustiger, Monday, 5 September 2005 02:47 (twenty years ago)

autechre - autechre
BARDO POND - LAPSED
Cocteau Twins - Treasure

TemporaryLeeee (templeee), Monday, 5 September 2005 03:42 (twenty years ago)

the incredible string band "the hangman's beautiful daughter"

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 5 September 2005 03:46 (twenty years ago)

Lee cmon, surely the Coc's album to hear end to end would have to be Victorialand =)

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 5 September 2005 04:44 (twenty years ago)

They did "Fingertips" and everything.

I think that would be the "Apollo" record - I forget if it's Apollo 18 or what number it is. But I would think either seeing this album or Flood live would be great.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Monday, 5 September 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

Predictably: Trout Mask Replica

Also: Tom Waits - Big Time

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 5 September 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

so jealous you saw that sundar - who was it? any recordings out there?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 5 September 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

The Kinks - Preservation (Act's 1 and 2)

They actually used to put on a huge broadway type production of this, but I don't think I was born yet. Ah well, I'd settle for seeing them play now. Or even just Ray Davies.

Sigh

Erock LAzron, Tuesday, 6 September 2005 04:49 (twenty years ago)

About ten or fifteen years ago, there was a group of musicians who performed "The White Album" in its entirety at a local club. It'd be great if that was still going on because I'd love to get in on some of that "Revolution #9" action.

Plus, "Not Guilty" would make for a great encore.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 04:54 (twenty years ago)

Robyn Hitchcock and some of his mates did The White Album a few years ago in a little club in London, I could YSI it if I could only figure out how to group the files together.
