can't remember! every year it seems they get traded in for the new flock.

2003, who was The Bravery of that year?

rizzx (Rizz), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

The Libertines, wasn't it?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

Up The Bracket came out in 2002

rizzx (Rizz), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 12:37 (twenty years ago)

the rapture?

marc h. (marc h.), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

The Rapture, tho it didn't translate quite as far as BIG hits.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

aaaah definately a candidate. yeah i think they were IT back then

rizzx (Rizz), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, no?

Roz (Roz), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

The Darkness.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

Speaking of which, it's time for a follow up.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

Razorlight, then.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

Yeah Yeah Yeah's didnt get as much coverage as The Rapture did, at least not on both sides of the pond, right?

rizzx (Rizz), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

The Darkness win, I think.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I think the Darkness sounds about right, actually.

Roz (Roz), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

The YYYs were the band I was having so rammed down my throat I got the KILL!!! KILL!!! KILL!!! impulse in 2003.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs were way more hyped then the Rapture in the US. Karen O was a minor media celebrity, even making it to the New York Times Magazine "questions for..." section. As well as Conan O'Brien. The Rapture only made it to Jimmy Kimmel.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

hot hot heat.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 31 August 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

Yeah Yeah Yeahs win, actually. I remember writing a piece with the lede, "The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are cooler than you." Um, my writing was still, uh, developing.

marc h. (marc h.), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs were way more hyped then the Rapture in the US

exactly

Rizz (Rizz), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

In the UK, too. I'm still not entirely sure who the Rapture are/were.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 13:08 (twenty years ago)

not on the mainland of Europe though, i still dont know who Karen O is

rizzx (Rizz), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

Also, The Thrills.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

When were Terris?

Citypark, Wednesday, 31 August 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

You shared a cab with Karen O
Oh oh
OH OH OH!!!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

the album came out 2001 thou i believe the hyoe started late '99 so momentum was rather lost. also 2003 saw the kings of leon break. house of jealous lovers does seem to have become an indie disco staple though, which i guess counts for something.

jive session (elwisty), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

fwiw I still like the Rapture and YYY albums and will be interested to hear the follow ups.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

YYYs and The Rapture had about the same level of success in the charts in the UK. Not sure what other barometer there is to apply here.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

i think yyys had a bigger uk profile than rapture. i don't think i knew who raputre were, but i even had a record by teh yyys.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 31 August 2005 13:24 (twenty years ago)

I'd say the Yeah Yeah Yeahs were probably bigger than the Rapture. I knew "House of Jealous Lovers" but I'm fairly sure I heard four YYYs songs from various places before ever hearing the album. And it seemed as if every rock crit was in love with Karen O.

Roz (Roz), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

Unicorns come to mind. Although they didn't get any mainstream hype.

mox twelve (Mox twleve), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

steve may not care how things fared in the US, which last I checked, is way bigger then the UK. Teasing, but fact is, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs made it to the malls and teenagers all over american cities started dressing like Karen O. The Rapture's impact was unfortunately minimal, though they influenced quite a few band to attempt the same.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

"Hey Ya"

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

"50 Cent"
"Lil Jon"
"Chingy"

One of these things is not like the others. One of these things is not the same.

Confounded (Confounded), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

Bands.

Oh well.

Confounded (Confounded), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

Broken Social Scene? M83? TV on the Radio?

Although I guess these folks were more (in may opinion anyway) talented groups who gained attention, not bands who came in with huge hype like The Bravery. I'm not sure there was something like The Bravery that year.

matt2 (matt2), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

"The Rapture only made it to Jimmy Kimmel"

Wrong. They acctually played on David Letterman.

JT, Wednesday, 31 August 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

oh, I missed that.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

I thought the real YYYs hype was in 2001, when the EP came out.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

Wasn't around 2 years ago the time when the Killers, the Thrills, the Kills, and
the Stills all got hype at the same time?

Zach S, Wednesday, 31 August 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

I still say the right answer is the Darkness. Those guys were freakin' everywhere.

Roz (Roz), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

Anybody heard the Darkness side thing British Whale? Is it out yet?

Confounded (Confounded), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

I still say the right answer is the Darkness. Those guys were freakin' everywhere.

Yeah, a solid contender, to be sure. I remember an NYT piece.

And at first I thought that one McLusky song went, "Everywhere I look is the Darkness." It was actually "a darkness" -- so disappointing.

marc h. (marc h.), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm... Never heard anything by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the Kings of Leon and Wilco.

everything, Wednesday, 31 August 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

When were Terris?

Awww, Terris. That was 2000. Nary a blip in the U.S.

But the president thinks their followers are a big threat; he keeps going around talking about "Terrists."

SusanWayward (SusanWayward), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

British Whale is karaoke with higher production values.

Mippy (Mippy), Thursday, 1 September 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

I think Terris were nary a blip in the UK outside of the NME.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 1 September 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

Weren't Terris just a big practical joke?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 1 September 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

why were the hyped bands of two years ago so much better than the hyped bands of right now?

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 1 September 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

Cos the hyped bands of right now were signed on the back of the hyped bands of two years ago.

Crackity (Crackity Jones), Thursday, 1 September 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)
