Don't Put Your Daughter On The Record Mrs Astley!

Or - musicians who put their infants on their albums. Virginia Astley did it as said on other thread, though on a record only I've heard probably. There is that Sinead track with her son warbling. Is it ever a good idea? Can a Lourdes guest-app be avoided on the next Madge CD or will the eels-and-pie ambience of the disc mitigate against?

Grown-up children are usually a bad idea but fall outside thread remit.

Also - "Lemon Incest": Classic Or Dud?

And! The kid going "Ha! Ha! Ha! What'cha laughin at?" at the start of 21 Seconds is a So Solid Sprog and is the only good offspring- contribution I can think of.

Classic: Bob Ezrin's sprogs bawling their eyes out on 'The Kids' by Lou Reed.

And Denardo Coleman!

Hollis Sparhawk cooing on Low's 'In Metal' is kinda sweet though...

possibly worst example: Ali Campbell + sprog's "Somethin' Stupid".

I suppose "Hey Matthew" by Karel Fialka is the only example I can think of where it works, but of course the presence of the kid is crucial to the sense of the song, i.e. a father and son watching television together.

Ornette Coleman's son Denardo, aged 10, drummer on ORNETTE AT 12!! OC himself plays violin and trumpet for the "first time"

Steve Vai's "Ya-Yo Gakk" = call & response between Vai's guitar & son's baby talk (refer song title). Highlight of Vai's solo career.

Lee Perry used his kids on record from time to time, notably the crying on "People Funny Boy" and the "Yam-Ma-Ky" cut of the Mighty Diamonds' "Talk About It". Both fine records.

There's that dreadful thing on "Sandinista", isn't there? Whose daughter was that?

I see RickyT has overslept this morning. I'll do it then...

Throwing Muses: "Dylan" (off The Real Ramona) and "University" (off LP of same name); the latter featuring squealing from two of her kids and Lenny Kaye.

Howe Gelb's kids (usually 1-3 years old) appear on most of his recent albums. On the last piano solo album it is his young son who babbles along. On "Center of the Universe" there was a Sonic Youth-like guitar hailstorm where his daughter did the screaming vocal part. I love those tracks.

I like that version of "Guns of Brixton" much more than the original!

Stevie Wonder - Isn't She Lovely? Yes, very nice, now can we have the next fuckin' track please?

Karen Mantler aged 18 months on Escalator Over The Hill.

They're Mickey Gallagher's kids on 'Career Opportunities' on Sandinista. Even so, still a fantastic album!

Kristin Hersh has her kids on some of her tracks, both solo and back with the Throwing Muses, and they're not necessarily bad cuts.

Lamb used the recording of the lead singer's baby's in utero heartbeat as the foundation for the the beat of "Alien". It's kind of excellent.

I just remembered 'Circus of Heaven'. As dave q so eloquently put it:
and if you're going to be 'twee' then go all the fucking way and have your five-year-old kid talk in the outro, which is what (Jon) Anderson's done here.

No clowns!, Monday, 18 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hooray, a chance to mention New Musik. The sound of Tony Mansfield's son reciting "We're all the same, all on our own islands that reach out forevermore into the darkest depths of eternal space...searching." on their alltime classic "On Islands" is a fantastic moment. He's also on that ET record they did.

New Musik. What a band.

Dan: Lamb ripped that idea off Sepultura! Well maybe not.

There's that dreadful thing on "Sandinista", isn't there?

Actually, there are about 30 dreadful things on 'Sandinista.' (Jesus, that was way too easy.)

Isn't Matthew Herbert's kid on the first track off 'Bodily Functions'? That's a pretty good 'un.
