The Sway Thread

Because we've already got threads for "Flo Fashion" and his verse on "Harvey Nicks", and when he goes in at #37 with a bullet and sometime next year we can all look so learned.

So, yeah, The People voted him as best Hip-Hop Artist at the MOBOs last night (ahead of 50 Cent and The Game), "Up Your Speed" is doing its doublespeed thing on the shelves this week, and the album is due in January. I'm hoping for at least two bumps a month for this thread.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 23 September 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

I like Sway. But he's so six months ago.

sean gramophone (Sean M), Friday, 23 September 2005 10:04 (twenty years ago)

Plan B is the new Sway.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 23 September 2005 10:06 (twenty years ago)

I always get Plan B and Part 2 confused, so I listen to neither of them.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 23 September 2005 10:08 (twenty years ago)

Not Sudden Sway then.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 23 September 2005 10:11 (twenty years ago)

This thread's on to a winner so far.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 23 September 2005 10:14 (twenty years ago)

So he's basically the most important and best British rapper since Betty Boo then.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 23 September 2005 10:17 (twenty years ago)

the Part 2 album is good but I think was buried when a pile of my CDs fell over, so I won't be able to listen to it until after I've moved house.

Plan B is quite good though you'd never know it from the dire, dire things he's doing with acoustic guitars.

Sway is brilliant!

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 23 September 2005 10:30 (twenty years ago)

Rolling Stones Song Sway > Artist

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Friday, 23 September 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

I like Up Your Speed a lot, otherwise he's not very good.

But better than Plan B.

Cristal Waters (nordicskilla), Friday, 23 September 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

Really, if Shystie and Sway can be (sorta) chart stars, I don't know why Donae'o doesn't give the top 40 a crack. I could see him on TOTP.

Cristal Waters (nordicskilla), Friday, 23 September 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

This is not that awful sway person from MTV?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 23 September 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

Cristal Waters (nordicskilla), Friday, 23 September 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

glad to see i wasn't the ony one who misread and hoped for discussion on those art popsters Sudden Sway. i still play their 4 sided album/double 12" in the yellow box with board game at wrong speeds. far too clever clever for their own good.

now to topic. not heard any sway yet, and i've never seen one of these much mentioned mixtapes anywhere round my area, are these actually available, or do you have to go to one of his shows to pick em up?

oh and that plan 2 album aint half bad.

mark e (mark e), Friday, 23 September 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

plan b

The Sway mixtape is available from Uptwon, rhythm division, Cage, ukrecordshop, etc etc.

Cristal Waters (nordicskilla), Friday, 23 September 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

doh. meant part 2.

not heard plan b. though i would indeed love to.

mark e (mark e), Friday, 23 September 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

This is not that awful sway person from MTV?

That Sway is more known as half of the Bay Area Wake Up Show with King Tech...who also did the album 'Concrete Jungle' circa 1990. The MTV gig is something new for him.

PappaWheelie B.C., Friday, 23 September 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

He sends me into fits of despair.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 23 September 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

Much like I did my co-workers those two years I had to work in an insurance brokerage.

TV is not his thing.

PappaWheelie B.C., Friday, 23 September 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

how did sway win best mobo? he has no album out. only two or three singles and 2 mixtapes. this guy is so overrated its untrue. sway is kinda lame, mediocre rapper, really.

okoko, Saturday, 24 September 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
anyone see him on The Culture Show last night? i'm still undecided really. The video for 'Download' looks good (iPod advert parody) but the track itself sounds a bit weak.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 4 November 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

even the UK chainstores have that 2CD promo now (£9.99 in Virgin). is it worth bothering with or should I wait for the album proper?

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 4 November 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
I'd say it's worth it. You have to remember they're mixtapes though, so end to end thrills aren't forthcoming. "The Magic Roundabout", "Thief's Theme Freestyle", "Pepsi", "Download" and "Call My Name" are worth £10 of anyone's coins though.

Anyway, the British urban press is full of Sway this month, which is fair enough, on some "FYOOCHOOR OF UK MUSIKKKK" steez. And he's usually alongside Klashnekoff. Now, I love K-lash like a cousin, but... does he really have commercial upside? "Murda" wasn't exactly popping on Chris Moyles each morning, was it? I'd like to see him go gold just so his anti-Lowlife rants get a wider audience, to be honest. And I'm just about to listen to his new "Focus Mode" mixtape, so I'll report back.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 22 January 2006 19:52 (twenty years ago)

The album's great btw.

'Curt' Russell (noodle vague), Sunday, 22 January 2006 19:58 (twenty years ago)

It is rather. To be honest, I'd pay full price for 60 minutes of Charlie Boy skits.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 22 January 2006 20:18 (twenty years ago)

Or you can come to one of my family gatherings.

Hal! Jordan! HAL! JORDAN! (Barima), Sunday, 22 January 2006 20:24 (twenty years ago)

"I Swam All The Way From Ghana" definitely needs to happen for real.

Michael A Neuman (Ferg), Sunday, 22 January 2006 20:48 (twenty years ago)

So thats a yes on the album?

I wonder how long it will take to hit the shops in Nz, I only got the mixtapes pt 1 and 2 in december. I liked em though so I am looking forward to the album.

not heard the album yet but the single little derek is pretty funny. not necessarily in a good way but amusing. he seems like he might be a novelty one trick pony.

okok, Tuesday, 24 January 2006 11:22 (twenty years ago)

"Little Derek" is followed on the album by "Pretty Ugly Husband" which is one of the most intense, brutal tracks I expect to hear all year. The boy got plenty tricks.

Madam, I Am Not a Doctor (noodle vague), Thursday, 26 January 2006 13:52 (twenty years ago)

"Pretty Ugly Husband" actually distresses me when listening to music in a way I've not felt since probably V/Vm's heyday. Which is a very good thing. It also takes balls the size of Cirencester to follow it up with "Flo Fashion" (a rerelease of that has to be the next single, right?).

Best line on the album: "Took off my braces/ Got bare embraces/ Now if a girl don't like me she's racist"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 26 January 2006 13:54 (twenty years ago)

I'm quite partial to "Rappers couldn't see me coming/If they were vaginas with glasses."

Madam, I Am Not a Doctor (noodle vague), Thursday, 26 January 2006 13:55 (twenty years ago)

xpost - shouldnt that be 'bracist'?

Wow, this album is SO MUCH BETTER than I expected it to be. However, both Sway and Dom Passantino are proved to be completely wrong by the fact that the Terrah Danjah production would sound about a million times better with a two-bit grime MC shouting east end-gangsta cliches over the top than someone pompously lecturing the listener about the evils of Kazaa.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 14 April 2006 15:40 (twenty years ago)

I mean, Hype Boys is great but don't go and sonically undermine yourself 20mins later on the same album!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 14 April 2006 15:43 (twenty years ago)

Pretty Ugly Husband, on the other hand, is the most powerful piece of music I've heard this year.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 14 April 2006 15:44 (twenty years ago)

got the album today (bit late, yeh) - tidying up my house with my walkman on and had to hide in a cupboard during "pretty ugly husband".

This album sounds even better in the summer, stuff like "Hype Boys" and "Products" just SHINES now.

Be interesting to see how the Klashnekoff album is gonna follow this.

"Pop legends Madness and hip-hop hero Sway have teamed up for a new single entitled Sorry.
Mercury Music Prize nominee Sway - a Madness fan since he was a young boy in baggy trousers - commented: “I’ve always wanted to do something with them, it’s an honour for me.” Sensing the need for a female element to the song, Sway duly invited friend and up-and-coming rapper baby Blue to the party as well. Although an incongruous and unlikely musical match at first glance, Madness and Sway all share a strong sense of humour, an unmistakable cheeky chappie sensibility and a love of London.

Sorry amassed over 55,000 plays in it's first 6 weeks on Madness’ official ‘Madspace’ page, and is now fast approaching the 100,000 mark. When the band performed the song during their 2006 sell-out arena shows, many fans already knew every word, and all 3,000 copies of the early 7” version of the single were snapped up well before the tour concluded.

Following the release of Sorry on 5th March, Madness will begin to unveil more material from their new album and announce some very special live plans. Sway is hard at work on his second album release, which is set to feature a further Madness collaboration.

LONDON (Reuters) - UK rapper 'Taliban Trim' has criticised Chancellor Alistair Darling for his handling of the Northern Rock affair. "Why should the taxpayer bail out Northern Rock when the government is just as culpable for failing to anticipate the fall-out from the US sub-prime debacle. He is a fassy."

used to think he was quite crap, overrated, and just a bit too 'jolly' for my liking but the new single f yr ex with sway is brilliant. and funny. makes up for everything else hes done. cant believe no one else has posted about it on ilx yet. uk single of the year so far.

titchyschneiderMk2, Monday, 19 May 2008 11:04 (eighteen years ago)

"Wearing My Rolex" x "I Luv U" + shouty Jamaican woman, right?

"Black Stars" is the best Sway track of the year, fwiw.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 19 May 2008 12:28 (eighteen years ago)

Stush is English, isn't she?

If the single version of F Ur X is the same as the African Nations mixtape one, thumbs down - weeak answer record to a six-year-old track that didn't need an answer (and probably had a dozen female ones already).
