But i'm at work. Should i broaden the horizons of my civil service colleagues with some freaky space jazz instead of the god awful james blunt that's on the radio just now?

Yes. Just have something to hide behind once they come after you with torches and farming equipment.

And tear gas and yelled-at-ear-splitting-volume ridicule.

I forget how lucky I am in my office. I have a big home-style stereo, two big speakers facing me. I listen to WFMU pretty much all day. If I want to rock out to some Art Ensemble or Xenakis, I can do it cos the guy I work closest to shares much of my taste anyway. I'm so spoiled and hermetic at this point that when I enter the 'real world' and go to say, a shopping mall, and I hear pop music, I have no idea what it is. This woman at a store counter said 'I just love Mark Antony', referring to what was coming over the PA - not understanding this, I said 'hasn't he been dead for centuries?'
