Does Billie- Joe Armstrong have throat cancer?

samantha ainsworth, Sunday, 25 September 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

Oh heavens no. You are confusing throat cancer with the condition of being rich.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 25 September 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

Are you perhaps thinking of his malignant ego tumor?

John Justen (johnjusten), Sunday, 25 September 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

one of these two posts was funny

You, on the other hand, are a pile of funny, monkeyboy.

He does have a tumor and it cannot be reached by surgery. He's terminally ill and he'll probably die in the next few years, so it would be nice if you stopped bitching about him.

Um. No he doesn't.

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 6 October 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

He doesn't have a big ego, does he? He's always struck me as quite grounded, considering his status.

I don't know...I knew people that knew him in the Gilman days and found him aggravating. Also, I have a bad tendency to conflate the hype around the "punks first political rock-opera" review crap with the musicians involved, which I realize isn't quite fair.

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 6 October 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

I don't give much of a toss about their arguable newfound political consciousness (which, honestly, seems pretty muted in the grand scheme of things, but at least they're trying, I guess). But in the interviews I've read and seen with Billie Joe, he seems like a relatively down to earth sorta gent. I applaud the fact that they've given up their Gilman Street Punk Credential crusade and are embracing their status as big ass rock stars (using pyrotechnics and making flashy videos, etc.) That was just getting dull. You're no longer Minor Threat, you're Billy Idol. Get over it and get on with it.

That said, I do find "Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)" to be cloyingly pious and unlistenable.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 6 October 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

but no tumor, right?

petesmith (plsmith), Thursday, 6 October 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Nope. Tumor free.

I think that part of the problem is also my tendency to attribute the motions that "rock stars" go through to be related specifically to them, rather than their management...that "Wake Me Up When September Ends" video was irritating to me due to the opportunistic politicizing of a (seemingly) apolitical song in order to ride the hype. Of course, I imagine that Billie Joe's involvement was largely relegated to standing on a platform and eating from the deli tray, so I should probably leave the fella alone.

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 6 October 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

My understanding is that it's not an apolitical song, in that it was written in reaction to 9/11 (which when I read about the song's motivation completely made sense) and I guess since it's a little late to invoke that imagery (which anway has alreadt been wrung for all its symbolic worth) they're invoking the imagery of the armed conflicts that have come out of that event and probably bring up some of the same complicated feelings. To me, that isn't totally deplorable but obviously I acknowledge that my take on it is just that.

The lyrics are still a bit on the vague side, though.....no necks really but stuck out.
