from nytimes article on bands replacing lead singers:

Doc McGhee, who represents the rockers KISS, has another twist on the idea altogether: he has been toying with the idea of recruiting an entire band to replace the original KISS and don the band's famous makeup.

"KISS is more like Doritos or Pepsi, as far as a brand name is concerned," he said. "They're more characters than the individual person. I think they have a legitimate chance to carry the franchise.

I like his original plan - replace the original lineup with animatronic characters - better. Much easier to franchise, and he could have a KISS dinner theatre in each major U.S. city.

For the record, this kind of thing is not even one of the top 10 reasons why I hate KISS.

Back in the 70s, there were two (and probably more) rampant KISS-related rumors:

1. The beleif that, like the Harlem Globetrotters (who had "East" and "West" versions of the team with different players), there were actually FOUR touring versions of KISS on the road.

2. When the first Van Halen record came out, it was rumored that the band was actually KISS sans makeup. (Though I don't know how anyone thought that Ace Frehley could play those EVH guitar parts...)

I think they should be replaced by muppets.

Ha ha ha, you're so dud! (wetmink2), Monday, 26 September 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

Interesting article. While I can understand why a band would want to continue its legacy beyond the death of its singer, it's just too damn difficult to determine whether they're doing it for love or money/power/fame. Whether or not that makes a difference depends on the fans.
