Andrew WK: do I love him or am I sick of him already?

What do you think of Andrew "Wild Kid"? You should read his biography at www.andrewwk.com. It sounds like it was written by somebody Danish.

maryann, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

LIVE HARD! PARTY HARD! BE HARD! RE TARD! M.O.R! OR AVANTE GARDE?

maryann, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

do you think he's really a classically trained pianist? that makes him seem quite sweet. he must be easy to review, because i said to duane, 'you know, like the attitude of daft punk towards house or gay dance music, sort of like that but towards def leppard and cheap trick and iron maiden' and then i read a spin review that send the same thing, only a bit more incoherently. by the way, i don't think the attitude of dp towards house or gdm is kitsch, rather obeisance.

maryann, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think the thing is Def Leppard was like that towards their *own* music. Which makes WK sorta redundant.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Has anyone read his interview in Sound Collector? I think this guy is crazy. And I can't decide whether I like it or not. I'm leaning towards not.

Todd Burns, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I still like the idea that all his songs were written by Dave Grohl.

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just went to his website and listened to a few songs. I can't say that I am happy I did that. I did find the cover of the album enjoyable though. I think I'll pass on the next opportunity I get to listen to him.

Lindsey B, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What kind of blood *is* that on his face, anyway?

Clarke B., Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I ask because the promo copy my radio station got had a big black sticker over the blood, which didn't seem that disgusting--just seemed like he had gotten into a rowdy brawl or something--until I thought about other types of blood... ugh. Isn't it ironic when censorship makes you think worse things than you ever could have imagined on your own?

Clarke B., Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I haven't heard too much from Andrew WK. What I have heard kind of sounds like an Ian Dury/Nivek Ogre hybrid wannabe making an ass of himself over some second rate Atari Teenage Riot noise... I can't say I'd ever want to hear another peep out of the guy, but that's pretty much the way I feel about most NME next big thing types. Am I wrong? Is there more to this guy than posturing?

Tim DiGravina, Tuesday, 19 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What kind of blood *is* that on his face, anyway?
The Ketchup Type. He's a boring joke that has lasted much too long. Scary? As in Scary Movie, not Exorcist. I thought it was WK for wanker.

helenfordsdale, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I quite liked "Party `Til You Puke," but the album's just a bit too samey for my taste. As a friend of mine said: The album does exactly what it sets out to do with the precision of a diamond tipped scalpal.

But what does he do for an encore? How much harder can he party?

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ONE WORD: SHIT

Poops McGee, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I hear for an encore at his shows he shoves a cd by limp bizkit up his arse.

SKIPPO, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He had a red-carpet entrance to the UK, and now they're trying to push him in the U.S.... but we've already got all those guys with masks and fire.... makes him him seem a little weak, really.

Andy, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

he's the weakest (ex-)member of the bulb roster... i can see how some people would find him hilarious and others completely obnoxious, my feelings are somewhere in between.

http://gygax.pitas.com, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

he was on Bulb? that + what maryann told me makes me sorta innarested. i'll probably never hear him tho', i live in a hermetically sealed bubble where no more music can ever penetrate. sign outside : "NO MUSIC TODAY".

, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just heard "Party Hard" for the first time (late I know) and I really enjoyed it.

Tom, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, bulb! here's his bulb page.

http://gygax.pitas.com, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think the obeisance not kitsch point is good. It sounds like that anyway. I don't know if I care about artist's motives any more. Party Hard reminds me of Ca Plane Pour Moi in a way. Sounds of it's time but as readymade as Johnny B. Goode, you know, as if that song had existed forever on a Toys R Us shelf somewhere and was just waiting for someone to let it out of its box. If I ever hear another song by either Andrew WK or Plastic Bertrand, I hope I'm disappointed by it.

fritz, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

pls forgive apostrophe abuse above

, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

but Tom I clearly remember you praising "Party Hard" some months ago, no?

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Andrew WK has single handedly redefined what I consider bad music. I just don't understand how he gets the coverage he gets. Man I hate him.

Dyson, Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How is Party Hard produced? It has a kind of high pitched drone, like Def Leppard. Lots of overdubs, someone said. For example, guitar chords overdubbed at higher pitches. I think it's an addictive sound. There must be some money behind him because in New Zealand he's got this kind of 'high rotate between tv shows' slot that usually only Limp Bizkit, Puff Daddy etc get.

maryann, Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is anyone getting the feeling he's this year's Babylon Zoo?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, that was probably someone else Mitch. I might have praised it in theory though.

Tom, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

eight months pass...
Setting aside for a moment the quality of AWK's music, can anyone deny that he's a complete original? Name another pop figure past or present even remotely similar to Andrew WK. You can't.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 04:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I have to admit, too, that I enjoy life more now that I live in the red.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 04:54 (twenty-three years ago)

The Ultimate Warrior?

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 07:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Speaking of which Ned Raggett was this close to getting a personal phone message from Andrew WK last Friday, but I decided to be a nice guy, and not let that happen.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 07:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I've seen AWK twice in the last 4 months, the first time was because my wife really digs him. The second time was because the first show was just so much fucking fun. While I'll admit that his songs probably aren't nobel prize winners, on-stage the man is like a tornado of positive energy. A lot of guys have to put on some sort of stage-face, look jaded or too cool or whatever, but when I saw this guy run out there with amazed, dinnerplate eyes and a drooling, slackjawed grin, I knew that he was there to have as good a time as anyone watching, which brings the whole level up a notch or two.

In short, though his cd has never been in heavy rotation in my player, I wouldn't hesitate to check out his live show again, or have him over for dinner.

And his dance moves almost rival mine.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 12:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the fact that he's invariably filthy.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I sorta respect that too. I bet his wardrobe/toiletries expenduratures are super low, and good financing is always A-OK by me.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 22:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I appreciate the man's positive attitude.

original bgm, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 22:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I appreciate that I've never had to smell him.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 22:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I guess with all the partying and living in the red he really doesn't have time for washing his clothes. I can respect that, I mean sometimes I don't have time for that either, and have to be pleased that I have so much clothes so I can scrape by without the filthy lifestyle.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 22:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I appreciate that I've never had to smell him.

I second this appreciation. Positive attitude without requisite cynicism = no son of mine.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 23:41 (twenty-three years ago)

B-b-but Andrew WK has made Ned quote Genesis! How do I reconcile my disdain with this fantastic fun fact???????

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 23:45 (twenty-three years ago)

That's Genesis? I thought that was just some crazy line.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 00:14 (twenty-three years ago)

his wardrobe? i betchya when the cameras aren't around him (which is the rest of his life at this point) he wears polo shirts and khakis and has a tiny foo-foo dog under his arm at all times. he probably stills smells bad tho.

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 08:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Er... Isn't it long past the time to stop talking about Andrew WK?

Dan I., Wednesday, 20 November 2002 08:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Andrew WK got me into Springsteen!

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 10:20 (twenty-three years ago)

is that good or bad tom?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 10:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Hush, Julio. Tom is happy after all. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 13:53 (twenty-three years ago)

The more I hear from his record the more revolutionary he seems (still haven't bought it yet -- I'm downloading songs one every few weeks. The only bad one so far is the "NYC" one. I should probably buy it to see if it makes the 2002 list.)

It's like he's from another planet. Six months ago I was listening to Sweet's "Fox on the Run" and wondering, "Why is there no room for this kind of music today?" Fun party rock that sounds good in your car. Andrew WK is stuffing up those cracks and then some. There should always be some bombastic, theatrical, Queen-style rock going on, and there wasn't, for too long. He updated that & took it to its logical extreme. Throw in all the quasi-"Personal Power" philosophy & you're talking a serious original.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 21 November 2002 16:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, NOW I'm befuddled. Seriously.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 21 November 2002 17:48 (twenty-three years ago)

You love him until it dawns on you that is songs all sound the same and are unfortunately just another form of butt metal.

Then you are sick of him.

webcrack (music=crack), Thursday, 21 November 2002 17:52 (twenty-three years ago)

that should read "his songs" of course.

webcrack (music=crack), Thursday, 21 November 2002 17:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark hit upon the one thing I've been trying to say all along... the record is bubblegum glam rock, albeit forced in some sort of wrestling rock production dimension... and is mainly the reason for its appeal to me, at least.

The thing about "I Get Wet" is, either you're in love with it, or you're really sick of it; and I'm currently really sick of it. One day, the record will come back and hit me like a ton of bricks again, but when, I have no idea.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 21 November 2002 18:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I crack up everytime I see the words "butt metal".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 21 November 2002 18:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I could see the long-term playabilty being a problem; I'm still in the honeymoon stage.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 21 November 2002 19:04 (twenty-three years ago)

This is my point! Wasn't "the honeymoon stage" with ADK like almost a year ago!?

Dan I., Thursday, 21 November 2002 19:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Andrew WK knows no end to the honeymoon.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 21 November 2002 19:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I've said it before. AWK = Gary Glitter v.2.0 (minus the child porn and with a little extra dose of speed metal).

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 21 November 2002 20:03 (twenty-three years ago)

''The more I hear from his record the more revolutionary he seems''

it sounds as if you needed a few listens to make that judgemental. for something to be 'revolutionary' I think the music HAS to have some sort of impact on first listen (prob the first few seconds), no?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 21 November 2002 23:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I second this appreciation. Positive attitude without requisite cynicism = no son of mine.

What a world we live in!

original bgm, Thursday, 21 November 2002 23:18 (twenty-three years ago)

My AWK honeymoon has lasted a year and counting. "We Want Fun" is godlike.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 22 November 2002 01:20 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
i love andrew wk
