The United States of America/Broadcast/Stereolab

What are some other great bands along these lines? They don't even have to have female singers, but I'm mostly just looking for that same spacey, almost-but-not-quite krautrock sound.

you wish you knew, Friday, 30 September 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

I was wondering the same thing, oddy..

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 30 September 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

oddly*

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 30 September 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

White Noise
50 ft. Hose

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 30 September 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

50 Ft. Hose seconded. I like 'em more than United States of America, actually. There were a couple of CDs that came out - one of old recordings and one new album, I think. Haven't heard those, but I like their original LP, 'Cauldron'.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 30 September 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the USA influence on Broadcast is basically just that one "cost of one admission is yr mind" song but the rest of USA can be pretty dodgy. I haven't heard Joe Byrd & the Field Hippies though. I haven't heard any 50fthose outside of Cauldron either.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 30 September 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

Oh, also check out Pram.

The Official Sugar Plant Thread

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 30 September 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

i was listening to da faith healers tonight! they could be spacey, feature female vocals, and were somewhat krautrocky. but they don't sound like usa or broadcast. they do resemble stereolab at times though. buy their albums!! they covered can ya know!!

i prefer the field hippies album to the usa album. i am in the minority there!!

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 30 September 2005 01:03 (twenty years ago)

i deny that thread's existence.

xpost

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 30 September 2005 01:06 (twenty years ago)

i prefer the field hippies album to the usa album. i am in the minority there!!

i do too actually!

huell howser (chaki), Friday, 30 September 2005 01:09 (twenty years ago)

the Joe Byrd and the Field Hippies record is underrated, it's best tracks are better then the worst tracks on the United States of America LP, I think.

Man, the new Broadcast record is awesome.

Pram were great.

I was going to say White Noise and 50 Foot Hose also. I guess I'm predictable.

Quickspace Supersport had a few moments of sub-sterolabness. Friends and all.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 30 September 2005 01:10 (twenty years ago)

Now I need to hear JB&theFHs and the new Broadcast. Is Pram still active? Helium and Sargasso Sea were great but I kind of lost the thread after that.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 30 September 2005 01:13 (twenty years ago)

YOu also need *Joyride* by *Friendsound* if you don't own a copy cuz it is only the greatest major label krautrock album made in the u.s in 1969 by two former members of one of the greatest rock bands of all time and it rules!!!! It drips with acid and dreaminess. Phil Volk & Drake Levin are my gods!!!! Don't even get me started on the brotherhood albums. I would be here all night. Total krautrock. 1969. Former Raiders. Got that? If you don't buy it immediately, I will kill you so hard! They even reissued it not that long ago. on vinyl even. wasn't that nice of them? used to go for 5 bucks on ebay cuz nobody knew what the hell it was. But those days are gone!!!

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 30 September 2005 01:26 (twenty years ago)

Are you making that up?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 30 September 2005 01:33 (twenty years ago)

Woah ok, apparently not. That sounds like the most made-up rare psych album ever!

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 30 September 2005 01:35 (twenty years ago)

seconding mr. seward on friendsound, that kills. cheap scorpio LP reissue comes and goes.

(as for the original question... julian's treatment?)

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Friday, 30 September 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

though the new broadcast is a little less like USA, more on the drum machine tip, just a word of warning. I dunno, when I first heard them I thought it was just too obviously a stereolab-esque USA rip-off and was like, forget it, but I warmed up to it and now I just love it. There's actually a VU vibe to this as well, the drum machine doing a maureen tucker thing and some squealing synths ala cale's viola, or maybe I'm hearing things.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 30 September 2005 02:55 (twenty years ago)

scott seward just MADE MY LIFE but suggesting joyride may be good because i have it just SITTING here, unlistened to and apparently unappreciated!!!!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 30 September 2005 05:06 (twenty years ago)

Some obvious stuff:

Monade (Stereolab side project)
Pram (seconded, or thirded)
Spectrum (Sonic Boom from Spacemen 3)

Um, also, you should check out the Broadcast DJ mixes on the Warp website (if they're still posted), because those are fantastic and feature many of the artists that influence their sound.

Also, I found a great comp called "Total Freakout Vol. 3: 1968-1973 Psyche Jello" on Mucho Gusto that you would probably really like.....

jsoulja (jsoulja), Friday, 30 September 2005 05:55 (twenty years ago)

I haven't heard Joe Byrd & the Field Hippies though

First side is as good as you hope it would be, second side is rubbish

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 30 September 2005 08:28 (twenty years ago)

Midnight Cowboy soundtrack

New Broadcast lp sounds like the first Lida Husik album on Shimmy-Disk.

Raw P at work, Friday, 30 September 2005 10:06 (twenty years ago)

I second the White Noise or anything BBC Radiophonic Workshop-related...

Feathers (from Miami) is kinda going in that direction...no vocals, but definitely in the same musical family...

here's their label's website - it's got an mp3 or two....

and here's their myspace page with another song:

mahogany
saloon
flowchart (some of it)

i seem to remember some bands on audiodregs sounding a lot like stereolab in points.

there's also a lot of kraut that isn't so prog and would probably fit your needs, in addition to white noise. later kraftwerk is just pop, eh? and michael noether stuff would sound like stereolab/broadcast instrumentals to many ears; stereolab's collaboration with nurse with wound was just basically a cover of faust's "it's a rainy day"; and the blue print for almost all their songs lies in neu. pushing the boundaries further, there's a lot of electronic deutsche punk, but it usually lacks the 60s influence that broadcast has.

the "america's boy" single is great (or that song is, tender buttons is ok). is the lp out? how is it?

Dan Gr (certain), Friday, 30 September 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

OS MUTANTES are the band for you, mystery poster.

no way - the Free Design are more like light-psych, that stuff is so syrupy it makes my teeth hurt ("I Like Kites" = uh yeah what are you 6 years old?)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 10 August 2006 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

How about Anthony Rochester?

yeah The Free Design are so sugary they're creepy -- but they were talented. I also think it's weird that the band really were all siblings. 'Hey gang, let's start a band!' and they did. This makes it all the weirder when they do love duets, particularly "Never Tell The World," where they sing to each other about how their love for one another has to remain secret because society would never accept them. There's plenty of other Free Design creepiness under the surface.

Oh yeah. Lumeny is the poor-man's Komeda.

Public Radio (public_radio), Thursday, 10 August 2006 20:19 (nineteen years ago)

is that the same andreas dorau who recorded "fred vom jupiter"?
yes. he's had a long career. but his first lp (which that song is on) is the best, but nothing like usa/broadcast/stereolab.
though, in the same region, there's some plan and pyrolator stuff that is a bit like u/b/s.

i was never impressed enough to buy the komeda albums. but if i saw the one with the party song on it used, i'd buy it; awesome lyrics:
>>
There's a pa-pa-pa-pa party going on
And there's some ga-ga-ga-ga girls we wanna meet
And then we fa-fa-fa-fa fall in (the) love
With all the ga-ga-ga-ga girls from the pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa party

That's the only Komeda album I own, but it does have about 4 songs on it that were fun. If you find it used, it's worth buying cheap.

js (honestengine), Friday, 11 August 2006 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

Oh man, there's so much here. Maybe we should distill it down to a list. Or maybe a few lists that represent different strata based on their proximity to the usa/broadcast/stereolab sound (although I suppose you'd need more dimensions then just a list.

Anyway I'm going to set USA apart right now because it's from a different era. In fact let's call that the influence list. So for that we have:

United States of America
White Noise
50 ft. Hose
The Free Design
Neu!
Os Mutantes
Elephant's Memory

...and then there are others that I would suspect are influences (Joyce) but I'm guessing.

Then there would be:

Broadcast
Stereolab
The High Llamas
Pram
Le Futur Pompiste
Komeda

I don't know where these would fall in the list:

Sugar Plant
Clock Strikes Thirteen
Domestic4
Rocketship (I think this one is a stretch but I can see the sunshine-pop intersection)
Snapper
These Trails
L'Augmentation
Lumeny (this band is kinda crap so maybe theyre negligible)
Carmine
Flowchart
John Sims
Ectogram
Band of Endless Noise
Schema

...I guess it's hard to figure out. I mean there are so many angles that go into stereolab alone: noise, lo-fi, brazilian, sunshine pop, prog... I dunno, asymmetrical rhythm signatures? I would argue the Beach Boys and The Byrds would have a lot to do with Stereolab.

I agree that the Broadcast Warp mixes are a good place to look. Stereolab's mixes on their site are good as well.

Public Radio (public_radio), Friday, 11 August 2006 20:50 (nineteen years ago)

I would say if you like early stereolab, and noisy shoegaze, you would probably like a band called Electro Group.

Public Radio (public_radio), Friday, 11 August 2006 20:51 (nineteen years ago)

Immitation Electric Piano is another excellent Stereolab spin-off.

Midnight Movies is a cool band that sounds like a more rock-oriented Stereolab.

Matt Olken (Moodles), Friday, 11 August 2006 21:01 (nineteen years ago)

there's enough rock mocking on this board already

Sir Dr. Rev. PappaWheelie Jr. II of The Third Kind (PappaWheelie 2), Friday, 11 August 2006 21:07 (nineteen years ago)

Oh right, another thing I'm surprised isn't mentioned: Lali Puna, Scary World Theory.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 11 August 2006 21:28 (nineteen years ago)

Which has a lot of the hushed, humming feel of the earliest Broadcast (Work and Non-Work), a more whispery version of the vocal style Broadcast and Stereolab have in common, the same simple, bell-like melodic quality as Stereolab, and a muted motorik pulse that's very Neu! and thus very Stereolab (though it can also resemble New Order) -- very, very much in the style of those acts, only German and more interested in microhouse-era synth textures and beat programming. Plus really, really good -- I can't imagine anyone who likes Broadcast and Stereolab not being in position to enjoy it.

See also Bergheim 34's "Random Access Memory," one track that's absolutely in this nexus.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 11 August 2006 21:37 (nineteen years ago)

if you're going for the influences, you're basically just going to get into the catchier krautrock. i imagine the stereolabers have a knowledgable collection of records. quite a commodity fetish for commies, eh?

so add to the influence, michael roether and la düsseldorf.
plus esquivel is a pretty obvious one.

mccarthy is worth a listen for one wanting to get more into a stereolab sound, just to go for the roots, i mean.

and i'd say the best rec i ever got from someone seeing i owned a stereolab record was to try out family fodder. (still can't believe "plant life" didn't make that best of cd... how does that band not have a full rerelease package? there's one for you, selzer.)

Dan Gr (certain), Saturday, 12 August 2006 11:28 (nineteen years ago)

maybe it's obvious, but Silver Apples should be up there in the influences as well.

Compare Stereolab's Mellotron with Silber Apples Ruby.

Family Fodder reissues are a job for Mr. Wolk, go ask him! I've got my own hassles.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 12 August 2006 17:05 (nineteen years ago)

Immitation Electric Piano is another excellent Stereolab spin-off.

Almost too close to the bone at points (hell, lead guy is in Stereolab and the releases are on Duophonic) but still good fun. Also, I love the fact that the liner notes for the first full album include a marriage proposal from said feller to his lady love. (Hope she said yes!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 12 August 2006 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

silver apples, definitely, yeah.

another band which sounds the same and wearss influences on shirts, so to speak, which i don't think anyone mentioned: stereototal. monokini opens with a definite nod to DAF --- who, as the sexed up kraftwerk, can also go on this list.

i got the impression wolk was done with releasing / was leaving the family fodder rerelease catalog at a best of. what i really want from mr. wolk, anyway, is the double lp of alan smithee. the 7" is awesome. (if anyone wants to sell their copy of the alan smithee lp, i'll buy it.)

Dan Gr (certain), Saturday, 12 August 2006 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

While we're talking about Family Fodder, I stumbled across this MySpace page a few weeks ago, which has a version of "Savoir Faire" that's about 45 seconds longer than the version on the DBC "best of":

Ghost Bear Junior High Attendance Party (Ghost Bear Junior High Attenda), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

The earlier McCarthy material doesn't really have anything to do with Sterolab, except the Marxist lyrics. By their second album they were showing signs of where they were ultimately heading. Try "The Home Secretary Briefs the Forces of Law and Order" for a proto-'Lab sound. I think the best McCarthy record, and the watershed for them (because they started using drum machines and keyboards) is the 12" of This Nelson Rockefeller. Specifically the four tracks on the b-side.

everything (everything), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

"Frans Hals" by McCarthy is very proto-Stereolab

zappi (joni), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't heard that song in years but my memory is that other than being a kind of chiming/droney, stick-to-one-chord kind of thing, it doesn't really sound like Stereolab that much. I guess the seeds were there. They kind of abandoned that style for the more Smiths-like first album then returned to it later, I think (I'm no expert by the way and I rarely listen to them anymore).

everything (everything), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

the addition of Lætitia's backing voice (and backwards keys) on Banking, Violence... brought the jangle of McCarthy that much closer to the 'lab's "Stunning Debut Record." enough so that, by the time of "And Tomorrow the Stock Exchange Will Be the Human Race," there wasn't much distance left to span.

Ghost Bear Junior High Attendance Party (Ghost Bear Junior High Attenda), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

The early Family Fodder is a good choice.
Also, Plone from this Brummie pack (Broadcast, Pram, etc.)

zeus (zeus), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 19:58 (nineteen years ago)

Strange, that no one mentioned Ladytron and the first Goldfrapp album. I know, they are different, but Ladytron has the same hazy shoegaze/chanteuse sound, while 'Felt Mountain' has almost the same filmy grandeur that 'Noise Made By People' has.

zeus (zeus), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

ten years pass...

Great thread! One thing essential to United States of America: the attitude re title entity, more snarky than preachy, though either way would make it more than girly vox x electro-embryonic journeys around the lab (not that I don't like that effect too).

dow, Monday, 26 September 2016 15:08 (nine years ago)

No idea what that post means.

3×5, Monday, 26 September 2016 15:17 (nine years ago)

Attitude of USA tracks such as "American Metaphysical Circus", "I Wouldn't Leave My Wooden Wife For You, Sugar", "American Way of Love", the non-snarky, tender-toned, but implicitly defiant to Cold War establishment "Love Song For The Dead Che", for instance.

dow, Monday, 26 September 2016 15:33 (nine years ago)

Interesting. I read somewhere that the singer from 50 ft. hose was a self-styled Marxist revolutionary. Songs like 'Red The Sign Post' are clearly Marxist. USofA's 'Che' obviously is. And Stereolab obviously are.
