So this bump is for those who pitched to fess up, and to allow others to guess which of the artists they pitched. I'm in there. (Hint: it's one of the artists that is pitched more than once.)

― Kim Cooper, Friday, 27 January 2006 05:38 (twenty years ago)
Bump!
I love these books. Any ILMers got one coming out soon? I've bought/read the following:
Neutral Milk Hotel David Bowie - Low Celin Dion - Let's Talk About LoveRadiohead - OK Computer My Bloody Valentine - Loveless R.E.M. - Murmur Bruce Springsteen - Born in the USA The Rolling Stones - Exhile on Main Street
Bought but haven't started reading yet the Belle and Sebastian book by Scott Plagenhoef.
The blog showed something like 500 submissions were given a year ago, so I'm hoping more releases are coming up.

― zvookster, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 02:07 (sixteen years ago)
so hey, got the nation of millions book in the mail this morning and it's v. good so far (one bus ride later). historical context, stuff on recording of the sample material w/ some focus on the important musicians and their intentions, incorporating & connecting meanings & connotations w/ other sampled tracks & into the PE tracks themselves, jumps in time that feel as natural & cosmic as a kubrick matchcut. style & content is reminiscent of the early (best) parts of Chang's book, researched storytelling w an elegance breaking into occasional eloquence, but with more of a sense of focus since all roads lead to one record. after only five pages at a natural break i paused just to look around me and feel pretty content w myself, always a good sign.

yeh it would be more in my comfort zone to rip on it for being corny & rong but what can i do. at 450 or so pp. it's on the thicker side for a 33 1/3 book i think? so hopefully it gets wack in the home straight & i can bring the h8. but my hands are tied, congratulation to whiney for &etc.

I can easily second this, finished this last night -- the book is fantastic, pulls together all the right sources, impeccably researched, tons of hard core details pulled together, fun to read, etc
nice to read you writing about something you're actually totally committed to, almost unrecognizable from the guy who posts endless bile to this board! had to say it, but serious congratulations on this book, you really did it right
― Milton Parker, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 01:22 (sixteen years ago)
listened to Millions twice while reading it, with detours to my CDs and youtube to check out things that were sampled, then went to Planet. back to Millions today
I remember reading through Rap Attack about 10 years ago and it was almost too frustrating, just endless lists of 7" tracks and b-sides I knew I was absolutely never going to find... then I re-read it again last year and about 80% of the tracks mentioned are all up on youtube... books like Whiney's that go through the sources and how / why they were used, they're golden beams of focused light in an age of distraction... going through the original elements and hearing what was done to them to turn them into Millions... on some records you hear the original ingredients and you're only disappointed but in this case going through the originals only makes the final album that much more astounding
― Milton Parker, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 01:52 (sixteen years ago)
damn, thanks, Milton. i am unbelievably psyched that you enjoyed it--and that you burned through it so fast! :D
