My boss. He was all country for a while, but now he's really "digging it" when it comes to the White Stripes and Jet.

does it have to be a successful return to rock? i mean the zombies came back, though they shouldn't have. i dont know what the hell they were doing otherwise, but i'm sure they made decent livings promoting charitable causes or something.

Are there any rock stars that first succeeded in another field?

Models maybe.

Loretta Lynne quit for a while to take care of her husband, who died. but she came back and made "Van Lear Rose" (if that's how the story goes).

The Stones reported that Muddy Waters was a pretty good roof painter at Chess Studios, in the early 60s before he made a comeback.

I gather there are a lot of rocker (red?) house painters, though I don't know how many of them are "stars" at it.

Yeh, I read that thing about Muddy in the Keith Richards biography. He would even help the bands put their gear in the studio

Sterling Morrison seemed to be a successful English Lit prof/tugboat captain before reforming with the VU in the 90's.

Dexter Holland went back to Cornell to finish his Ph.D. between Offspring albums. Ph.D. in molecular biology from Cornell = a successful work career in my book.

Wasn't Leonard Cohen already a known writer before he started making records?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 2 October 2005 10:08 (twenty years ago)

Certainly.

Did Tom Lehrer's academic career in mathematics precede his musical career or run in parallel? (not that he 'rocked' - he supposedly hates r'n'r).

Ha, still further removed from rock: Charles Ives ran a highly successful insurance business and generally composed after hours...
