Yeah, we all know JC spent the last few years of his life knocking out the Lollapalooza karaoke tracks, but this is about the inverse: are there any good/"notable" covers of Johnny Cash tracks? Other than "Ring of Fire", obv.

And yes, I know "Ring of Fire" wasn't originally by him. This isn't a fucking pub quiz.

I thought Ring of Fire was "originally" by him, just not written by him. Or did Merle Kilgore record a version?

Anyway, Giant Sand's "Adios" (appears JC's American III as a duet with M. Hag.) is swell.

I love the Fairport Convention cover of "I Still Miss Someone".
Uncle Tupelo did a savage "Cocaine Blues".

Wall of Voodoo's "Ring of Fire" -- godlike. Stan R.'s cover at the show last year I saw -- equally so.

Pearl Jam did a fantastic cover of "25 Minutes To Go" on the Benaroya album. I know the song wasn't written by John R. Cash, but it's definitely his song.

Grateful Dead did "Big River"

Search: Bongwater's version of "There You Go" on Double Bummer.

Declan Zimmerman (Declan Zimmerman), Friday, 30 September 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

Search Dylan's Basement Tape versions of "Belshazzar", "Folsum Prison Blues". and especially "Big River".

Emmylou and Dolly both do nice versions of "I Still Miss Someone."

("Ring of Fire" was written for Johnny by June, wasn't it?)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 2 October 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and Social Distortion does "Ring of Fire" too, making it sound just like every other Social Distortion song. (Which I'm not saying is bad, necessarily.)

i love johnny cash, but covers of his songs always seem useless. like ramones covers. just automatically sounds like open mic night.

this is the best cash album cover...

We'll Meet Again is especially touching. Particularly as his last track on his last album.

oh sorry, i didn't read the question.

one year passes...
The singer of this Belgian tribute duo is a friend of one of my collegues. I checked out the link, just in case, and they're actually quite impressive: check out the sample tracks here.
