How much money do you spend on Music Mags each month?

I work two overnight shifts a week, so I go right through them. Even the sucky ones. Rolling Stone, Spin, Blender, Q and fucking Mojo.

Shit adds up.

Maybe 6-20 dollars depending on whether the free Knowledge CD looks good or I pick up something to read while I am on a bus or something.

The last couple of months, I've got it down to nothing. :)

(unless Sound on Sound counts)

I photocopy every page of Mojo, Q, and Blender from the local library every month. Costs about $13-$14 total.

What, even the adverts?

i read the decibel reviews at the newsstand and buy every second or third issue. it's really a good magazine--smart writers who don't talk down to the readers, plus it's funny. uniquely good. i always imagine some smart twelve year old reading the reviews and getting turned on to godflesh or ar kane. i used to buy the wire but now do quite well without it.

I only buy music mags in airports. so, about 15 bucks a year.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Friday, 14 October 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

$0

Subscriptions to Blender and Tracks (the latter now shifted to Paste) + occasional whim purchases = roughly $3-5/month.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Friday, 14 October 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

$0. Are any of them worth reading? Maybe I'm just jaded but I gave up on music magazines a long time ago. I can get all the information I want about music online these days and it's a lot more informative and interesting than anything I can read in a magazine.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 14 October 2005 23:42 (twenty years ago)

depends on how many train or bus rides I take that month, I usually buy one per. I'd say on average maybe $5 a month (I skim through the Billboard at Tower Records every week, though).

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 14 October 2005 23:46 (twenty years ago)

Just go read them at newstands. Paying is for suckers.

splates (splates), Saturday, 15 October 2005 01:52 (twenty years ago)

Every once in a while I'll find one I like - I bought a few issues of The Sound Projector and Popwatch over the last few years. But generally the net is faster and more varied and I can read more opinions about things. So I'd have to say $0 as well these days.

sleeve (sleeve), Saturday, 15 October 2005 05:25 (twenty years ago)

$0 - They're almost never worth it.

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 15 October 2005 05:27 (twenty years ago)

Too true. I find some of them even hard to finish. By the time I get to the reviews section of Spin or Roling Stone, I'm usually so put off that I'm more inclined to toss the fucker across the room.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 15 October 2005 05:28 (twenty years ago)

the only one I'd drop money on would be The Big Takeover, which probably has about ten times as much to read than another, similarly priced mag.

gear (gear), Saturday, 15 October 2005 05:28 (twenty years ago)

I still think I'd rather read SPIN cover-to-cover than any other music mag out there right now.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 15 October 2005 05:30 (twenty years ago)

To be fair, it's partly because my musical tastes are sort of spotty, so it's unlikely there will be more than one artist I really have any interest in reading about in any single issue of any magazine.

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 15 October 2005 05:30 (twenty years ago)

maybe $20 every couple of months - mojo sometimes if it looks interesting, plan b when I can find it. I've dropped right off too.

haitch (haitch), Saturday, 15 October 2005 05:32 (twenty years ago)

oh, and the wire occasionally. usually I can just borrow someone else's copy of that though.
