Is Supreme Clientele a grower?

I'm a big fan of Wu-Tang and related-projects, but this just isn't doing it for me the first time around.

It seems like heresy to say so, but it's never been my favorite either. Maybe like my 10th favorite Wu-related album, at best.

Luvs it. But, I loved it right away. So maybe it's just not for you. Worth it just for "Nutmeg" tho, surely?

Ironman's the grower

Ironman's better, yeah. This is good, but not gritty enough.

Supreme Clientele is a grower. Got it when it came out and up until not even a year ago I was pretty meh on most of it and said so somewhere on ILM. I went back to listen after that discussion since I hadn't in a while and had only ever given it a few listens anyway and damn if it didn't blow me away. I honestly don't know what I was thinking.

Obv. this depends on the person. I'm hardly one to spite early wu-jockers but really how can you say early ghost >>> mid-late ghost?

Ghostface right now--meaning 21st century--is unassailable. to me anyway. he's on that new Dangerdoom LP for one cut and when he shows up he just flattens everything around him.

btw, is anyone going to catch him on tour this month? i really want to go but i hate having to buy shit through ticketmaster, lousy thieves, grumble mumble...

Ironman is Pop as fuck, a lot of its greatness is there from the first listen. Supreme Clientele is a lot denser and less hooky, and I think it needs a few listens. But it's that density that makes it more satisfying in the end, plus it feels like a more complete entity whereas Ironman is a bunch of great tracks thrown together. I reckon SC is a big leap in Wu-affiliated albums, which might be cos RZA's not on it so much even though the non-RZA productions still feel like he's overseeing them. Persevere, def'nitely.

supreme clientele is a SHOWER (rhymes with grower, not glower)

petesmith (plsmith), Sunday, 16 October 2005 04:04 (twenty years ago)

a shower AND a grower - a huge cock of an album.

petesmith (plsmith), Sunday, 16 October 2005 04:05 (twenty years ago)

I really don't know what to say, after that. but I agree.

haitch (haitch), Sunday, 16 October 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

SC is the best wu-related solo album, in my opinion...I think the genius of it was that, although there were a ton of guest producers, RZA and Ghost oversaw the whole project and were able to blend it together so smoothly that everything fits into place (even the jagged, record-skipping track)...I don't think these songs would sound proper outside of the album, and its definetely one that needs to be digested whole...Ironman is less satisfying, Pretty Toney comes close, but this is the masterpiece

liquid swords, cuban linx and heavy mental are all superior

rizzx (Rizz), Sunday, 16 October 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

i think it's a great album, but i liked it pretty much immediately, so i dunno if i'd call it a grower.

its pretty breathless, and all forward momentum, which may not be to everyone's tastes.

if you're looking for a few particular standouts as a way of reeling you in, focus on "childsplay", "cherchez la ghost" and "stroke of death"

loved it first time around, that first track!
