Not when you're leaving a message for someone else, but when they call you and you don't pick up.

awful bliss (awful bliss), Sunday, 16 October 2005 01:45 (twenty years ago)

Every Christmas I use a clip from Tiny Tim on the Beatles' 1968 fan-club Christmas single: He says, "Oh, what a thrill it is, talking here! And the thing is, I just want to wish Merry Christmas to you all; oh, and a Happy New Year *ohh*." The closing orgasmesque sound makes it worth letting it play all the way through. At least, the first time.

A friend of mine used the second verse of Ivor Cutler's "Good Morning! How Are You? Shut Up!" for a while.

Paul McCartney's "I'll Give You A Ring" delivers the helpful lines "Give me your number, I'll give you a ring," which pretty much says it all. Also, his "Call Me Back Again" might be handy if you're bad at returning calls, but do wish the caller would take another stab at it.

For something a little weirder/confusing, perhaps "I tried to telephone / they said you were not home / that's a li-i-i-e" from "No Reply"...

if your name is Bill, you should use "Where the Hell Is Bill?" by Camper Van Beethoven. also, the Vandals have a song in which the intro is Kelsey Grammar(!) recording an answering machine message.

ring ring ring ha ha hey or whatever it's called

"Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey)" is indeed the title; that lyric is in turn taken from Curiosity Killed the Cat's "Name and Number."
