How do you pronounce FSK? Or the song even by them?

Sounds like a stupid question, but I'm trying to track down a song on an old tape of stuff from the John Peel show, and he mentions a band called F S Kar....I'm wondering if these are the same band?

It was from sometime between 97 and early 99, has a long instrumental bit with what sounds like churchbells chiming in it then someone singing in German at the end. Hmm.

Sounds like Freiwillige Selbst Kontrolle (sp?) - they were favourites of Peel's for a while, and also known as FSK IIRC...

"Fry zilliger Zelzt controller" was roughly how Peel used to pronounce it. But he was probably wrong.

Freiwilliger Selbst Kontrolle (Voluntary Self Control)

They are called "Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle" "(voluntary self control"), which is a German institute that rates movies.

oh... I wish the sound samples worked on that site :(

The Michaela Melián record from last year (Baden-Baden) was pretty great. I've never heard FSK.

At least two really good albums -- *The Sound of Music* (Flying Fish, 1995) and *International* (Catamount, 2000). Both have excellent liner notes plus collaborations with David Lowery of Camper Van Cracker; the former has references to the Trapp Familie and John Coltrane; the latter has references to Roxy Music and Amon Duul.

...and the german pronunciation of the letter K sounds like "car" - ergo, Peel's pronunciation is correct!

As to the music, I strongly recommend that the whole world buys this:

It's probably got the song you're looking for, Mippy - almost the whole album has been played on Peel at some point.

The album I seem to want is called Tel Aviv, and from looking at the Peel playlist site (atavistic.demon.co.uk) it's called Jazz Lexicon or Odenwald. Seems as though the album is long out of print, though. If anyone has mp3s of it and fancies e-mailing them to me...

Thomas Meinecke is a pretty good writer of experimental novels, by the way. They deal with gender studies, Detroit Techno, Krautrock and the german-american relations on several different levels. But I guess it's very difficult to translate them.
