"Learning to Fly" - Pink Floyd

"Suspended animation, A state of bliss
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit"

"Basketball Jones." I was born in the midst of the 1979 NCAA championship (Larry Bird v. Magic Johnson).

I can't remember my birth but the birth of my son was actually accompanied by 'Children' by Robert Miles. The delivery room had a (rather battered) CD player in one corner and a whole load of CDs but at the time (it was an emergency) neither of us were in any mood to choose something, so some kind nurse just put the first CD that came to hand. I didn't really like the song before but now whenever I hear it - it brings tear to the eye. My son (now 8) doesn't like it though. Perhaps it reminds him of the trauma on some kind of primitive level! According to the midwive most people picked heavy rock, good to scream along to I guess...

CHILTON
Do not reach through the bars, do not
touch the bars. You pass him nothing but
soft paper - no pens or pencils. No
staples or paperclips in his paper. Use
the sliding food carrier, no exceptions.
Do not accept anything he attempts to
hold out to you. Do you understand me?

CLARICE
I understand.

CHILTON
I'm going to show you why we insist on
such precautions... On the afternoon of
July 8, 1981, he complained of chest pains
and was taken to the dispensary. His
mouthpiece and restraints were removed
for an EKG. When the nurse bent over him,
he did this to her...

He hands Clarice a small, dog-eared photo. Looking at it, she
is stopped in her tracks. This pleases Chilton.

CHILTON (contd.)
The doctors managed to re-set her jaw,
more or less, and save one of her eyes.
His pulse never got over eighty-five,
even when he ate her tongue.

He simply wanted to see his newborn son!! MWAA HAA HA!!!

Salt 'N' Pepa - "Push It", followed by The Ramones - "Baby I Love You".

Also Carter USM's "Born On The 5th Of November", although they get the day of that particular month wrong.

The Velvet Overlord (The Velvet Overlord), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

Consider me to be a fly on the wall
With a bird's eye view
I stare, as my birthtime drew near
The only Earth I knew reared me
In a world I grew to fear
I do appear quite nude and warm
I'm like 'What's up with the lights
and the white uniforms?'
You're damn right you're truly wrong
When a hand strikes the newly born
I can't fight, I'm cruelly scorned
In a man's life the beauty's gone
I was scared with fright through the storm
I'm prepared to write a mutiny song
'It's a miracle Ma!' Damn, my dick is long!
Oh, that's just the umbillical cord
Clip clip, snip snip and now it's gone
Along with my foreskin, one of them
Awful things that they do to the offspring

- Sage Francis, "Time Of My Life"
