Why aren't we talking about KELIS covering "Brass In Pocket"

One of the best pop stars EVAH does one of the best pop songs of the 80s EVAH and I can't find a thread on it! And it's almost as good as you'd expect, or, a lot better if you expected it would be crap. It's from the "Just Like Heaven" soundtrack, or some such. I mean, it's Kelis FFS, she is great.

At any rate, it's a lot better than Alanis Morissette's attempts to do "Crazy" by Seal.

So talk about this, or link me to the thread where people have talked about this.

Well, it helps that it's Kelis instead of Alanis, and that it's "Brass in Pocket" rather than "Crazy."

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 02:05 (twenty years ago)

Actually, "Crazy" is a bloody fantastic song, and the production on the single edit of Alanis's version is brilliant, but her voice is completely ill-suited. Kelis, of course, is suited to absolutely everything because she actually can't do any wrong (except when she has other people on her records).

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 02:07 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I could certainly do with another album as good as "Tasty." . . .

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 02:47 (twenty years ago)

What a let down. It sounds exactly like the original. I was hoping for a fucked up electro version. I hope the rest of her new album isn't this normal.

Except this. God, even Suede's version was better.

god that Alanis cover is SO bad. I heard it in GAP, which was presumably my punishment for being in GAP (swift work there Mr Cosmos).

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 08:36 (twenty years ago)

It's from the "Just Like Heaven" soundtrack

astor riviera (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

this is one for the dionne farris/macy gray fans.

astor riviera (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 11:40 (twenty years ago)

shit, scarlett johansson's version was better than this.

astor riviera (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

Wow, that really does sound like karaoke. She's not even very soulful on it.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 11:48 (twenty years ago)

Eh. I, too, was envisioning some sort of pared-down electro groove.

Never thought I'd say that, but Chryssie Hynde sounds so much sexier.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 11:52 (twenty years ago)

She sounds like she would rather be somewhere else.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

I'm picturing scenes of people enjoying fabric softener.

kevin says relax (daddy warbuxx), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

omigod that alanis cover is quite astoundingly terrible.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 24 October 2005 09:57 (twenty years ago)

I wish this was better. I like Ultra Nate's cover from a few years back more, for one.

two weeks pass...
Actually i listened to the seal version and the alanis version back to back and i gotta hand it to alanis, she makes the song sound unreal. i love it
