ILM: The Survey...

To be followed by the statistics!

I'm taking a stats class and figured ILMers would provide an excellent source of data. To wit, a survey consisting of 9 questions. I tried not to ask anything too personal and nothing is required, so only answer what you'd like.

I'll share the data once it's all done and let you know what grade I got. Thanks in advance and I apologize for the number of times I bump this up.

[EDIT: The orginal link is closed due to overwhelming response. If you're still interested in answering, please visit the new version of the same survey here. If you answered already, no need to answer again.]

The inclusion of "I Feel Nothing" for my job was incredibly OTM, and cathartic. Thanks!

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 05:45 (twenty years ago)

I'm done!

BeeOK (boo radley), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 09:05 (twenty years ago)

Yeah.

Sorry to be a twat but I put "0" in the album downloads, because I don't download albums, I download probably 50-100 new tracks a month tho, so maybe I should have put the album equivalent, sorry.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 09:22 (twenty years ago)

I've done it, I agree - "I feel nothing" is just about right for my job.

Rob M (Rob M), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

i put 0 for albums cos it's the gosh darn truth./

N_RQ, Tuesday, 18 October 2005 09:37 (twenty years ago)

stood up and was counted.

mitya forgot his frigging password, Tuesday, 18 October 2005 11:33 (twenty years ago)

I am one. "I feel nothing".

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 11:57 (twenty years ago)

I don't download albums, I download probably 50-100 new tracks a month tho

This survey was too rockist. (I download albums because everything I listen to is in another language and I don't know what any of it is. Slight exaggeration.)

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 12:14 (twenty years ago)

This survey was too rockist
ha. this certainly wasn't the intent. i'll note that in the experiment for future generations to further examine.

anyway, i got over 100 responses, which exceeds the number of answers i can pull down for free. so... here's the same survey in a new color! and without the opportunity to answer twice in the same question...

answers from the two (or more) surveys will be combined and presented for your amusement in a couple weeks after i learn wtf a chi square is.

Thanks again!

ack, wrong link.

here's the new survey, now in orange.

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

I got 130 responses so far, 200 would be great. If you haven't answered, please do. Even and especially if you aren't a regular poster. (Nothing identifying will be used in the presentation, so fear not.)

Again, the survey is available here:
http://surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=104581431314

I'll take the survey down at the end of the day, convert all your responses into punch cards and feed those into the Craig Supercomputer.

Thanks to all who answered. I'll post the Power Point demo (!) in a few weeks.

Roxymuzak, Mrs. Carbohydrate (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

Add another one!

John Justen (johnjusten), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

Um, that was my quasi-witty way of saying I took it, not a request for another survey...sorry, I got all a-flutter...

John Justen (johnjusten), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

it is an exciting series of questions, so i understand.

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

Pulse-pounding, even.

John Justen (johnjusten), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

chi squares rock!

carly (carly), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

This thread is seriously fucking cool.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

Completed. Not sure about that final question though the parenthetical (outside of iTunes) implies wink-wink-nudge-nudge Other Sources. There are plenty of legit channels (eMusic!) that aren't iTunes.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

it did imply the wink-wink, but true enough and will be noted...

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

..you're both divorced and dating somebody?

..also what if you spend a negative amount of $ on CDs every month because the amount you get from selling CDs exceeds what you spend?

what if...., Wednesday, 19 October 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

hrmm. damn, i should have put more thought into this... go with your gut on the first one. as for the second, you are spending money even though the money came from selling cds, no?

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

Answered.

Burger abortion i don't ask it i demand it!!!! (jaxon), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

Did it! (I answered the survey, too.)

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

I spend too much money on music.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
since i ended up having to spend some money to get the data out in a reasonable format, i'm able to share the summary results (no individual responses).

these will be up for a week or so, til i cancel my account.

for the purposes of the class, i'm only using those who gave a name or a number of postings in the past 30 days, so i got 166 usable responses. thanks much. i'll post back when the assignment is over.

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Friday, 4 November 2005 03:13 (twenty years ago)

respondents were collectively responsible for 23,398 posts in the last thirty days, out of about 96,250.

this raises the question of the reliability of the most active users table. i remember there being problems with it relatively recently, no? seems a lot of people who should be in the top 300 aren't.

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Friday, 4 November 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

So if I'm interpreting those results correctly this means that 90% of us are male, 57% are in relationships, 61% own more than 1,000 albums and 77% of us spend more than $25 a month on music.

Only one really major surprise there.... hands up everyone who pretended they've got a wife / girlfriend.
