Cheekiest Greatest Hits Album

Leftfield have just released a "best of" album having only released two "proper" albums. Help solve an arguement for me: has any group released a greatest hits album on the back of just one real album, the cheeky fuckers?

GLC don't count.

Didn't Gene release a sort of greatest hits that was all the songs from their second album plus two from their first or something?

Arrested Development?

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

Sex Pistols?

Did Phil Spector actually release any albums other than the Christmas one before Back To Mono under his own name?

Nick H (Nick H), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

Also NWA only had SOC and Efil4Zaggin didn't they?

Nick H (Nick H), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

wow, arrested development had a SECOND studio album.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

spector had a 'best of' based on NO albums AT ALL. it's fkn graet.

I have a late 70s Spector comp LP, so there's at least one.

get this:
electribe 101's 'electribal memories', was simply *repackaged* as their 'best of' compilation. identical track list, same artwork, everything.

as corroborated by amazon uk who have this under the 'best of' listing

An official re-issue of the original CD by Polygram Records, it's an exact copy of the music from the original recording in CDO format and the same graphic for the cover. See our member profile for det...

But isn't a greatest hits collection basically a comp? I thought we were looking for a lack of studio albums.

Nick H (Nick H), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

ah, you're right. The Christmas record would be his only LP

Old School (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

But a greatest hits LP from Spector isn't cheeky at all. Mofo had hits.

Old School (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

Didn't Fugees do this?

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

Didn't Fugees do this?

oh no wait, they had that other album with no hits ...

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

Fine Young Cannibals
Lone Justice (altough their comp--from the UK IIRC-has a bunch of unreleased stuff too)

A UK label released a "best of" for Big Star (*not* the Rykodisc set, this was quite some years before), which was basically a CD of most of -Radio City- and -#1 Record- with (I think) four cuts removed. Not long after, the reactiviated Ardent label quickly proved that you could fit all of both albums on one CD perfectly.

I have a Big Star Radio City / #1 Record with two cuts missing "because of the limitations of the CD format" but it doesn't claim to be a greatest hits. I can't remember the label, but I think it's a UK disk. It's 69+ minutes, and the songs omitted are "ST-109" (I think that's the name) a 1-minute instrumental, and "In The Street" (used as the That 70s Show soundtrack), which add up to less than 5 minutes. I thought even the early CDs could handle 74 minutes.

nickn (nickn), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

The "best of" for Big Star I was referring to was this one, on Ace Records:

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:6cbyxdjb2ola

I was wrong on the count; they dropped ten tracks. Which seems even more egregious, actually. And Ace is a fine label otherwise, too, so this surprises me.

I don't think Spector was cheeky as such. The guy was one of the most important people in the history of pop music. But I guess I was being a bit facetious and taking the question as written. He made bloody tons of mammoth hits which would go onto his greatest hits comp, but they weren't under his name, whereas the Christmas album was. Also I just wanted to appear clever.

I think I've got this - its all you really see for them in the shops these days.

Even if its cheeky, I still like it a LOT

What about the "Best of Sparks" CD on Curb Records, which is not any sort of compilation, just a repackaging of the album "Music That You Can Dance To" -- one of the Mael Brothers minor efforts, IMHO.

one hit wonders have greatest hits .eg:
toni basil, dexy's midnight runners , etc.

Morrisey's Bona Drag!

Look, really now, why do people routinely class Dexy's Midnight Runners as a one-hit wonder? That's just stupid.

About Phil Spector...not to take away from the man's accomplishments, but why are you even considering PRODUCERS?

Rev. Hoodoo (Rev. Hoodoo), Thursday, 20 October 2005 03:51 (twenty years ago)

Flowered Up's "Greatest Hits" is, IIRC, their only LP with one track moved from the middle to the end and 'Weekender' added. Same cover art, except with a small "greatest hits" logo stuck in the corner.

Zodiac Mindwarp & the Love Reaction have also endured the "first album rebranded as Greatest Hits" syndrome, I believe, despite having several other albums (possibly every one on a different label though) and half a hit or two elsewhere. My own compilation of all the pre-first-album vinyl-only stuff is probably better than everything they released after the first album, though.

kit brash (kit brash), Thursday, 20 October 2005 04:40 (twenty years ago)

bona drag is just a singles comp right? filled out with some old songs.

it was silly for laika to release one after three records. especially as the third one was a drag.

"geno" didn't chart ?

retrogurl, Friday, 21 October 2005 01:32 (twenty years ago)

six years pass...

Backstreet Boys greatest hits was called "Chapter One: the Hits", which I found pretty funny, since everyone knew the Backstreets had scored their last big hit

Lo-Fidelity Allstars had a two-disc "Best of" collection that had more tracks than both their albums combined! That was weird.

Also, why has no one mentioned Mrs. Miller's Greatest Hits? (actually, her first album)
