Sounds like it was recorded anywhere between 1962-72. Has a motown/R&B feel and production. Vocalist is a black female.

Got a memorable bassline that sounds practically identical to the first 4 notes of "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bun)" by the Four Tops, except slightly slower with more swagger. As the those first four notes hit "din dun doon din" the singer is singing "Since you been gone..." in time with the beat.

Have been looking for this tune for years. Help friends.

sounds like Freda Payne's "Band of Gold"

That is IT! Just hearing the song is like scratching athlete's foot of the mind.

Thank you Dr. Bill.

yeah, this is a definitive That Song. Title only mentioned twice (and not in the chorus), not an exceptionally major artist--for the longest time, just knowing the title I assumed it was a country song.

Anyway, no problem.

I love that song.

FYI:

"Since you been gone..." is only the first line of the last chorus...

It's "Now that you're gone" for the first two. I know this because I copy/pasted the lyrics to a noize dude thread called "Since You Been Gone" thinking that Freda said it a bunch of times in the song, but sadly only the once.

How many other songs about impotence have hit the top 40?

"Stutter" from Elastica -- never top 40 but a damn good song.
