it's pouring, in Rome tonight is really cold. I don't have MAN-MADE (though love Howdy! et all). I'd better stay at home watching AC MILAN football match, cosy on my couch.

Thing is that it's the first time TEENAGE FANCLUB come to Rome and I would love to see them playing in my town cause I used to love them big time when i was a teenager in the 90s.

advice?

NO

castro, Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

Doh! The correct response is, of course, yes. 'Man-made' is another classic, sort-of halfway between 'Howdy' and 'Northern Britain' both in sound and in its place in the Fannies pantheon.

persecution_smith, Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

YES

But I disagree about Man-Made, couldn't get into it myself, although I have friends who love it.

Regardless I've had some great times seeing the Fanclub

actionjackson, Wednesday, 19 October 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

I saw them a few weeks ago in San Francisco. Pretty good show, but I wouldn't say it's a must unless you're a hardcore fan.

richard wood johnson, Wednesday, 19 October 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

YES so you can sue them

i know for a fact that teenage fanclub are not teenagers or a registered fanclub and therein lies the law suit once you are disappointed by this state of affairs at the concert

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!, Wednesday, 19 October 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

great advises...nearly made up my mind

hub, Wednesday, 19 October 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

You should go. The football will be a boring 0-0 draw.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

No.
THey are painfully shy and put on an awkward show. All Norman songs.
Changed the way I listen to their stuff.

Jonathan DD, Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

Jonathan DD - Interesting response. How do you listen to them now? I agree though, I thought they were boring when I saw them a few months ago. Like Richard said, more for the hardcore fans, which I'm not.

TRG (TRG), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

Hi Unhappy Gilmore.

I don't listen to them now. But if I did, I would listen to "Howdy."

In defense - the songs from "Northern Britain" that they performed live were excellent!! They were built to play those songs/be that band. But anything written prior to or after that was mediocre, as was the stuff from the new album, which is one of their worst. Sagely, they didn't even touch "Thirteen." "Howdy" was predictably under-represented as i don't think they are completely comfortable with the commercial incompatibility of that album--a great modern sunshine pop record--and were eager to get back to a more, ahem, rockin' sound. AND the beer was like 6 bucks a cup.

Jonathan DD, Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

duly fucking noted

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

6 bucks a cup, 7 w/ tip! You have to take out $40 just to get drunk!

TRG (TRG), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

tip?

no wonder....

Jonathan DD, Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

Ya cheap fuck

TRG (TRG), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

Well if they're gonna charge 6 bucks for a beer, what do you expect. I mean it's Teenage Fanclub. This is an audience that is stuck in the 90s. Lets try 4 bucks. Then I tip.

Jonathan DD, Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

'90s beer prices were better, no doubt.

TRG (TRG), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

I would love to see them

Voodoo Child, Wednesday, 19 October 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

Only if you're allowed to bring in a rifle.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

The "fannies" tag needs to end.

QuantumNoise (Justin Farrar), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

Why the TFC hate, Alex? Don't you like nice harmonies?

Sweat Loaf (Sweat Loaf), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

Or do they just not say the word "fuck" enough in their lyrics?

Sweat Loaf (Sweat Loaf), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

The correct answer is YES.

I saw TFC for the first time live at the Bowlie Weekender in Camber Sands in 1999, and my love for the band definitely INCREASED for the experience. Mind you, they were in the full 'Songs From Northern Britain' flow, then.

Also, 'Man-Made' is a pretty solid record, definitely an improvement on the hit-and-miss 'Howdy'.

Plus the first chance to see a band you love(d) has to win out over cold weather concerns and couch potato la-la land, surely?

Dead Kenny (Dead Kenny), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

football was actually a boring 0-0 draw.
luckily i went to see teenage fanclub.
not the most exciting gig of the year tho

hub, Thursday, 20 October 2005 06:47 (twenty years ago)

Yes nothing special live from my experience but in Rome I might have went. First time I saw them was at a High School in Los Angeles during the Bandwagonesque tour. Saw them again during the Thirteen tour and that was it for them live. Like an idiot I didn't buy tickets the first day for OK Computer when they were the opening band. Did catch Radiohead in San Francisco when they came back with Spiritualized on that same tour and I'm positive that was a huge upgrade.

Didn't care for Howdy! at all but Man-Made seems to be a better album.

BeeOK (boo radley), Thursday, 20 October 2005 10:06 (twenty years ago)

the gig was actually good; they're still a pretty solid band with ten years of great tunes behind their back. RESPECT to the shy lads.
beer was shite and expensive though.

hub, Thursday, 20 October 2005 10:46 (twenty years ago)

eight years pass...

anyone seen them recently? what stuff do they play?

mizzell, Thursday, 24 July 2014 15:23 (eleven years ago)

ah, so last night was their first show in two years. it was a lovely night on pier 84 in manhattan and they sounded quite good. a handful of songs from northern britain which were all great, some stuff i didn't recognize (i don't know any of the albums after sfnb) and then they announced they had one last song and broke into the concept. i walked out of the park as the coda was still going. it was perfect.

mizzell, Friday, 25 July 2014 15:23 (eleven years ago)

I've been dithering over getting a ticket to see them in glasgow next month... it's pretty pricey but I think you might have tipped me over the edge. thanks!

sktsh, Friday, 25 July 2014 15:36 (eleven years ago)

their last album was really good

Οὖτις, Friday, 25 July 2014 15:42 (eleven years ago)

I caught one of their Bowery Ballroom shows around "Shadows" and it was fantastic. Total fan show. Sadly no longer a New Yorker and missed the free show this week.

Kate Silver, Friday, 25 July 2014 15:47 (eleven years ago)

o wow, they played everything flows in the encore. too bad i missed that...
