I've been lurking for a while...hello.

So, I've been trying to figure out my favorites for this year. So far:

Oneida/The Wedding
Akron/Family/ST
The Hold Steady/Separation Sunday
The National/Alligator
Spoon/Gimme Fiction
French Toast/In A Cave
The Heartless Bastards/Stairs & Elevators
Mahjonng/Raydoncong
Devin Davis/Lonely People of the World Unite
Pelican/The Fire in Our Throats...
Devendra Banhart/Cripple Crow

Though I just started listening to that Deerhoof CD and may have to rejigger things.

Pretty white and male, huh?

welcome to the board!!!!

harshaw (jube), Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

I just thought it was weird that all the records I liked the most this year, with one or two exceptions, were by men. But maybe it's not weird or it's not important or whatever.

I don't see how it's a gimmick, really, but if what I'm saying is offensive or boring, I'll just go back to lurking.

I do like reading what you all have to say about music.

Don't go back to lurking. At first posting on ILM is somewhat intimidating, but then you realize that this is the internet and if the thought of social interaction on a message board cripples you in fear, really, what chances do you have?

Mickey (modestmickey), Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

Mickey!!!!!!

Confounded (Confounded), Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

Not offensive, not boring. Hi, Jenny. If you can shrug off what are at times Olympic levels of sneeriness, superiority and sarcasm, then there are some fascinating people around here, and a lot to discover. It's not exactly the cuddliest of message boards, and after nearly two years of regular posting here I still feel like a complete outsider... but who says all worthwhile online communities have to be cuddly in the first place? I've even grown quite fond of the distanced curmudgeonliness... it keeps the mind alert. So please don't get brow-beaten back into lurking.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

Mickey, thanks but my email is linked to all my reviews (at least at Splendid) and I get plenty of interaction on the internet. I'm not intimidated, just sort of surprised at the vehemence and, I don't know, lack of content.

Jennifer Kelly (jenkelly), Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

That's the ILM breaks, early on. People want to test you, to see if you're tough, if you can TAKE THE HEAT. I think that's boring, myself. Welcome, Jenny Kelly (I had a crush on a homonymously named girl all through my childhood), and continue to like any music you like and to talk about it. I think you're often a good writer.

P.S. Try some Brooke Valentine or some Curumin or Cuizinier or Deana Carter, just for fun.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

if you fancy the akron s/t...just wait fer the new split with angels of light so you can hear how they really sound.

think its out next week

bb (bbrz), Thursday, 20 October 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

bb, I can't tell if you're saying that the split is going to be really good or really bad. I have the Akron/Family S/T and think it's okay. I don't regret buying it, but I certainly don't throw it on for many spins. Is the split something I should get or not?

Mickey (modestmickey), Thursday, 20 October 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

Jenny, okay, I'm glad you aren't experiencing social anxiety.

If you were, I'd recommend the following healthy confidence building exercise: gather a bunch of your bros to go pick on easy targets on the internet. Might I suggest a message board for victims of rape? You could ridicule them constantly, then pretend to be on their side ("Tell me more about your experience. This is a healing process.") and then promptly return to ridiculing them. If you get really into it, it is worthwhile to chronicle the whole event and compile a detailed historical account. Make sure to include pivotal moments, such as when you made that one bitch cry. Your bros will love it and you will build the confidence to be a successful member of the cyber-community.

Mickey (modestmickey), Thursday, 20 October 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

Hi Jen. I hear you like a band called The Song Corporation...?

Eppy (Eppy), Thursday, 20 October 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

I'm listening to Akron/Family/Angels this week and like it a lot, esp. "Future Myth" They sounded a lot quieter when I saw them, but I guess that depends on the night and the venue.

And yeah, the TSC single, very cynical and funny...more coming?

And finally, Mickey, wow, you're really into that rape subject. Rough childhood?

jk

Jennifer Kelly (jenkelly), Thursday, 20 October 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

That's the word on the street...

Mickey's post is ill-judged and stupid. Jenny, your favorite albums of this year are bad ones ('cept Spoon), but welcome to the board!
