...when you least expect them to?

Background is that me and my significant other were driving and I had The Cuban Boys John Peel tribute track and she was in floods of tears and then so was I. And I didn't when I heard the news of his death. So a year later was it just delayed reaction?

Are there any records that just get you "right there"?

Ned "there's a tear in my beer" Trifle

I know we've done this before. Alex and something about XTC's "Across the Antheap," right?

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Thursday, 20 October 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

Sinead O'Connor - Chiquitita

Old School (sexyDancer), Thursday, 20 October 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

Wow....great memory, Jazzbo!

More than that, though: "This Woman's Work" by Kate Bush (absolutely every time, regardless of what I'm doing. I could be mowing my non-existant lawn with it on my headphones, and I'd still weep like an octagenarian grandmother. If you don't well-up when you hear this, you're a fucking Skeksis).

Hey thanks for pointing me in the directions of those other threads. Some amazing choices.

Ned T.Rifle, Thursday, 20 October 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

crying is lame!

petesmith drunk (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Thursday, 20 October 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

michael jackson - one day in your life
angry anderson - suddenly

retroman, Friday, 21 October 2005 11:44 (twenty years ago)

Even Maxwell's cover of "This Woman's Work"?

Yes. I don't wish to again. I hope he gets a groin infection for that.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 October 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

michael jackson's "she's out of my life" made HIM cry!

petesmith (plsmith), Friday, 21 October 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

Okay, this is lame, but I have to confess. Once, and only once, Dire Straits' "Romeo an Juliet" had me welling up at the "Juliet when we made love you used to cry; You said I love you like the stars above I’ll love you till I die" part.

anything by billy joel makes me want to vomit!
Dunno bout crying?

bollockboy, Saturday, 22 October 2005 05:22 (twenty years ago)

vashti bunyan - glow worms.
destroyer - goddess of drought.

only from shocked experience, the former high the latter drunk.

rockaction (rockaction), Saturday, 22 October 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

I was walking up Broadway on my way to work last night listening to, aply enough, "Nights on Broadway," and it's gorgeous enough to make me want to cry. No lie.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 22 October 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

Kate Rusby - My young man
I was at one of her gigs when I discovered this...

Niall, Saturday, 22 October 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

"Joga" and "Bachelorette" by Bjork come damn close as well.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 22 October 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

All the songs I write make me cry. Especially the ones about Gywenny. I can't help being so sensitive.

Chris "Chris" Martin, Saturday, 22 October 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

"Lucy" - Nick Cave + The Bad Seeds.
"Baby Mine" - Dumbo (Bonnie Raitt does a great version too)
"Coat of Many Colours" - Dolly Parton.

OOooooOOoohhh...good one.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 22 October 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

It's scary how effective it is. I just have to hear the first few bars and I'm reaching for the Kleenex.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 22 October 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

considering the 'when you least expect them to' qualifier, the real relevant thread here is Ambushed by unexpected emotion

jermaine (jnoble), Sunday, 23 October 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

Emmylou Harris - "Till I Gain Control Again"

*sniff*

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Sunday, 23 October 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

As I just noted on another thread, The Communards' "For a Friend" is probably the song that most reliably brings me to tears. (But therefore it doesn't fit the "when you least expect them to" part.)

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Sunday, 23 October 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

Cat Stevens - "Peace Train"

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 23 October 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

black eyed peas - my lumps

edr98r589we9e54854, Sunday, 23 October 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

The Apartments - Mr. Somehwere (but not the This Mortal Coil version).

Guymauve (Guymauve), Sunday, 23 October 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

Speaking of Cat Stevens - "Father & Son" is another that will bring me to tears.
