Producers and their understudies

Provoked by Alex in NYC's mention of George Drakoulias on the Electric thread. Any other interesting Producer/Understudy pairings out there?

Any cases where the pupil has surpassed the master? F'rinstance, he works on a smaller stage but I've really enjoyed a lot of Daniel Lanois-understudy Malcolm Burn's work.

I'd distinguish this slightly from producer/engineer teams e.g. Lillywhite/Padgham, though thoughts on those are welcome too.

Stories confirming e.g. Rick Rubin's personal chef's response to Drakoulias' mom's spanokopita light SPECIAL. Stories confirming a forthcoming collaboration between Glen Ballard, Glen Hansard, and Glenn Danzig activate MULTIBALL.

Like here's a good Malcolm Burn secret origin story...

At some point, I heard that Eno was hanging around in Hamilton with Dan [Lanois] at Dan's studio — which he and his brother Bob had — called Grant Avenue. So I became quite keen to work with Dan because of the Eno connection. When my band started to get popular down in Toronto, Dan's girlfriend brought him to see us. Unfortunately, it was a terrible gig, just awful; one of those nights when nothing worked. But I guess Dan liked it enough that he then requested a meeting with the band. So we met with him and he was really quiet. Then one of the guys in the band and our so-called manager at the time went down to see Dan's studio. They came back and said, “Oh, this Lanois guy's not goin' anywhere. It's kind of a Mickey Mouse studio. Who wants to make a record down there? They don't have that much equipment. We want to work with someone famous.” I was young and believed that bands were democracies and the decision was made to work with Geddy Lee [of Rush] instead. Geddy was a great guy and he worked really hard and made a good record for us. It was all part of the business situation.

I don't know the exact way Tom Morris (Morrisound Studios in Tampa, Florida) and Scott Burns operate, but over the years Burns has become a more famous producer than Morris.

Tchad Blake kind of started out as Mitchell Froom's understudy, didn't he?

Scott Storch understudied w/ Dr. Dre and Timbaland (and then bit their styles, and also worked with Lil Jon and then bit his style)
